One year I had literally nothing that I wanted (most of my hobbies cost pennies and the rest cost nothing beyond a WiFi connection) so I told everybody -- I don't really need any more *stuff.* But it felt super fucking shallow and boring to just ask for money, so I mentioned that what I'd really like would be to travel. It was honestly one of the best gifts I've ever received even though there was almost nothing concrete.

FIRST

I took action for the first time to seek out a mental diagnosis today after going through the past two month with a huge brain fog, no motivation to do anything (even sleep, i'd sit in front of my computer to lazy to go to my bed), at one point I couldnt move my body even though I wanted to get up and do work. Im just falling apart as I am distracted by every little thing, I can't do the "should" do and only can do thing that I must or enjoy doing. Im going to go seek help with what i think is possible ADD and anxiety. Any advice? I'm afraid that because of my use with weed is gonna dissuade my doctor from helping me with meds. I'd really like to get my life back on order and i've even made plans but I just can't seem to keep them or enact them, I'd always get entangled in some mundane but slightly interesting article on the internet or youtube videos or facebook feeds which constantly stimulated me. I want to get help as im in 2nd year of uni and if this keeps up, I dont even want to think about it. Any advice for my first appointment?

honestly, there are plenty of people who want to do game dev, and who ARE good at math and who are not lazy.

and they still fail.

and even if you succeed, unless you're one of the best in the business, you don't make money doing it - because everyone wants to do it.

another thing is - the games industry is so big and so advanced/specialized now that you don't need to be a great programmer to make great games. plenty of real games are made these days as mods for existing games/platforms.

the hard part of making a game is coming up with an idea that people will like. you don't need math to do that.

then, you can pick one of the existing game engines or platforms out there and try to flesh out your game bit by bit. find other like minded people to work on it with you.

if you don't have the passion to do this, you will have learned that game dev stuff is not for you.

the only thing that can teach you to not be a lazy sack of shit is feeling the burning passion to accomplish something. its hard to care about accomplishing school work you don't believe in.

also, stop drinking and doing weed. that stuff kills your brain, kills your drive, and in the computer business, your brain is the only asset that matters.

It's probably just your perspective man, sounds like you want to do it but don't want to take any steps towards doing it.

Put it this way, if you keep it up, you'll end up being 29 and still wanting to be a game developer, with little to show for it.

Now, I'm not really meant to be putting fear into your head because you're actually in the prime position- you're 19, you've got enough time to fuck up a few times, enough time to make it work, and learn it all. Unfortunately, 'knowing' that you have to do x, y, and z, isn't really helpful- you can still be as lazy as fuck.

My advice is to work on yourself a bit and just force yourself to do it. I know it's kind of easier said than done, but there's not a lot to say. Honestly, I'd say just make as much as possible. Even 30 minutes studying will add up over the years.

You might need to dream bigger to give you motivation, or you might need to break it down into smaller goals that seem realistic- it depends on you. Perhaps you should write out a plan with long, medium, and short term goals. Go wild and dream big, just remember to have the smaller steps in place.

Anyway, you're young, you can do it, you'll be fine. Just get some drive. For me, exercise and meditation really help me focus and do more. My idea is roughly, that putting more effort into all areas of life helps your entire life.

Meditation has helped me in my life.
I'm a total newbie at it, and only I've been going through books (so I don't have a proper teacher).

But even then, I've learned how to notice certain qualities of my thoughts. Most importantly, I've learned how to separate the emotions from my thoughts. For example, thinking about my flaws and the dumb things I do without starting a spiral of self-hate.

If you're a kind of person that's really hard on yourself, I think meditation would really help you out.

All in all, I don't think it'll hurt. I see it like physical exercise. A little bit goes a long way. And you don't have to go all-in, and make it the focus of your life. Just like most of us won't get to be Olympic athletes - most of us won't get to the level of Buddhist monks in meditation.

I had issues with panic attacks. Psychosis level stuff. Have mental illness running in the family so think it had to do with that. Began meditating 4 years ago. Have only had three attacks in that time and they were hardly psychosis level. Other than that it helped me with anxiety over death and social situations. Best choice I ever made.

It's not a miracle cure. Everyone is different, so I can't guarantee that you will have as profound experience with it as I have had. However (like Dan Harris says in his book) to say it will make you 10% happier is probably fair. And if you're anything like me you might gain way more than 10%.

honestly though anon, you should try going out if you're that lonely. online friends are great, but time differences can be really annoying and it's nice to have someone you could actually go out to places with.
