I really hope you guys can help me out here.

>all amateurs who hike in the summer
So it's already to rain hard af here, so undoubtedly there's going to be snow. Is there any tips you guys can give, either those who have been there before, or have hiked in semi-alpine areas in this time of year? We don't want to die.

Rain is going to be your biggest difficulty.
Staying warm in dry weather isn't too hard - just pack some insulation and you're good. I have hiked/camped in -25C without real difficulty. The hardest thing sub-zero is keeping water available (melting snow/ice), and it's pretty hard to start fires with wood/tinder in those temps so having gas helps.
If it is wet wet AND cold, then you're going to have the problem that wet makes you colder, and nothing that gets wet will ever dry. Basically, expect to have enough spare clothes to keep replacing them as they get wet. If you are out for 5 days, you probably want at least 5 pairs of socks, etc. If you really trust your jacket / pants, carry fewer shirts.
Always keep a completely seperate set of clothes dry for sleeping in - you need much more warmth when sleeping than when up and active and even something that is half-wet will be much colder.
hiked it recently. not bad make sure you have a good insulation layer and your set. especially if you heat a water bottle up and toss it in the bag with ya. if you have xcountry skis you can cut off a lot of slogging through wet slurpee snow for almost 14 k going up to tusk or panarama. if yur just around the lake just stay dry and if its pouring its sometimes good to split a 3-4 man tent load amongst you and huddle for warmth. tiny fold up umbrellas and/or a single use (the trip counts as one) Poncho are super useful for keeping you/gear/friends gear dry
is it possible? i am so sick of living in this world.
i have no debts, i'm young. i live in canada
Just go. What's your problem?
You're going to have to expand, young one. What do you want to do?

All I can tell you is to dedicate a few weeks to deleting and erasing all your social media, your credit cards, and other means of identification.
If you are truly serious about this, consider reading a book or doing some research on the internet.

What have you been catching most of your bass on recently?
>>889012
Idk, they started moving a little bit more lately so I have been getting them on shit besides Texas rigs. I think the last time I was out on Sunday, the largemouth hit the Mepps and peacock grabbed that 1/8oz chatterbait. And the weekend before that I got a nice lil largemouth on an X-Rap. I think pic related was last week and can't remember if he took the chatterbait or what.
I have a 370 dollar gift card for bass pro shop what should I buy
What do you need?
>>888529

I'm in the market for some /out/ cookware. Should I get a stove and fuel and mess kit or just use fire and bring a mess kit?
Can you fagg/out/s recommend some good mess kits that are lightweight and compact?
also general cooking shit....
Pic related is all; you need to know.
I don't car camp but I also don't thruhike camp. I hoofcamp. As such I'm able to lug fresh foods and a campfire grate with me and it makes for delicious roast beast. When I do long hikes I just bring some dry Knorr pasta and shit like that to cook up with my Stanley pot.
It depends. "Just" a mess kit also requires firewood, while a propane stove just needs propane and the stove. When I have room I do prefer a campfire, though. Can't beat the taste of hardwood smoke IMO.
Any outdoor store will sell a good-enough mess kit and an extra pot and pan.
Enough of this hiker/bushcraft hobby /an/ tier bullshit.
What are the best states for true outdoors-man? Hunters, trappers, fisherman, farmers, etc.
Be real faggot, you ain't gonna do shit.
>>886616
Why do you feel threatened by hikers and bushcrafters? Are you a fag that needs a "manly" activity to make you feel better about yourself?
What does /out/ thinks about him?
>>886049

is being egotistical masterrace?
I think he is pretty cool.
Yes or no? Do they fuck up your wealth or are they just as legit as regular food?
I read that they have huge amounts of sodium, in what does that translates to your body regulation?
it's like you're not competent enough to catch yourself a few fish to eat.
>>885621
Hey bby
>>885620
Sodium isn't a big deal if you're actually moving and sweating. Those Mountain House meals are just kinda overpriced. Have you tried Soylent™?
>*Soylent™ is also overpriced for what it actually is
>>885622
OP isn't going to be actually moving and sweating otherwise he wouldn't need to take that garbage with him.
Anyone have an /out/ career? Care to describe what you do/any stories you have?
I was wondering what kind of jobs are out there for an environmental scientist
Get a job with the government making up science and killing prosperity.
High pay, great bennies and perks plus you get to pretend like you care about the environment while you destroy it. Good times
>>885604
That's a pretty broad dismissal of an entire field of study
>>885735
It is, but dems da facts boi. Forget to mention it but having to phoney the science will kill your soul
I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life...
OP you are in the nubile pre-gearfaggotry stage. It's an exciting time, but it can be confusing. Here's my personal breakdown of the way forward:
1. Become self-aware of desire to partake in a hobby.
2. Lightly involve yourself via forums, friends, etc.
3. Start breaking down the gear you need, separate needs from wants, immediate vs. "someday" purchases.
4. Begin buying gear, get all into it, but don't waste money.
5. You have the gear, the long-term interest and investment, you've been reading and understanding the hobby more and more, time to put this shit to use.
6. Go /out/ and learn the rest by doing.
~~ALTERNATE PATH~~
1. Take your bookbag and blanket and go /out/ and learn completely by making mistakes and trial and error.
>>890594
wait for the rain to stop
>>890594
Thank you for not frogposting. It isn't difficult to get started:
1) Put on socks, then shoes
2) Open door
3) go outside
It's a good idea to tell your mom where you're going and when you'll be back, and you might want to bring some water and a jacket.
The first few times, bring a watch so you know when to turn around. Once you level up you can walk til it gets dark, sleep where you are, then walk back in the morning.
>>889731
who cares mang, you're still /out/ and that's a feeling of freedom money can't fuckin buy, cherish it and laugh at the kids dropping $165 on a titanium tacticool spork
your grandfathers didn't pussy out about packs over 16kg, neither shall you

Hey /out/ I have a bit of money lying around and I decided to buy a 100acers of land with my friends to plant a forest. This idea was inspired by the ""before the flood"" documentary.
Where is the cheapest place to plant the forest without any gov interference? We are just planting the forest for our enjoyment, we will not be logging. We figured we could pay the taxes by renting the place to campers for a few months.
So which country is best to do this? Africa? Kambodia? I live in India, is this a good place to do this? Or this this idea too stupid and impractical?
Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.
>>890297
>too stupid and impractical
nailed it

What do you suggest I do?

I am looking to get a pie iron for some tasty cast iron pies/sandwiches over the coals. Anyone have advice as to if the round is better than the square one?
I like using square ones so If I want to go ghetto and use slices of bread it fits better
>>889235
yup, we always use them to make mountain pies with bread and pie filling
square piron because pic related.
Was looking at this
https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Celsius-Sleeping-Weather-Camping/dp/B000F36TM0/ref=sr_1_4?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1478329137&sr=1-4&keywords=zero+degree+sleeping+bag
Seems good to me, and I like the XXL because I like to keep my legs separated a bit when I sleep. The weight seems a bit much but worth the extra few pounds if it means I can sleep better in the cold.
I have the exact same one. Xxl, same colour and all that shit. It's honestly the warmest coziest thing i've ever slept in. You'll be good for -15°C. A couple problems. It's massive. When they deliver it to you, you look at the size and go "is this a joke?" then you go out and buy an xl size compression sack cuz that's the only size that'll fit the bag (trust me you'll need one for this bad boy). It's still massive. You have to strap it to the top or bottom of your pack. Also it weighs like 8-10lbs. Again, i fucking love this bag but good lord is it bulky.
I use quilts, bags suck. Enlightened equipment makes great quilts
>>889102
>8lbs
you don't plan to trek with this monster right?
I was working at my neighbors garden digging up old stakes when my shoes finally gave out on me
