I'm a perma-nightshift guy in the oilfield. I've been through a ton of headlamps, but haven't really paid attention to which were good (most weren't because I'd be in a hurry and buy the toughest looking one I could find at a North Dakota Wal-Mart or gas station).
I need one that's relatively tough--while I have one of the more cake jobs out here, even it is decently rough on gear.
Definitely water resistant (ideally proof).
Bright (I have to use one to look into open shade in a lit unit at crap that's around 4' away and be able to see a fairly small difference in contrast).
Decently long lasting (I usually burn mine around 6 or so hours in a shift).
I also tend to prefer AA or AAA battery powered ones. I realize that usually kills longevity, but being able to find replacement batteries more than makes up for that to me.
I don't care about weight (I've considered wheat lamps, but I don't wear a belt for one and don't like the idea of having a chord dangling that can be grabbed by machinery) and only care about price insofar as I'll get pissed if I don't get at least six months out of something that costs $100

Any tips for keeping a titanium plate from scorching when using it as a pan?
On the back end of that... best way to remove scorch marks from a titanium plate?
Frying things is a luxury/recreational endeavor, If you're going so hardcore that the few grams of weight difference between an aluminium and titanium pan is important then you're not going to be bringing a frying pan in the first place.
You can probably get the scorch marks off the plate with a piece of scotchbright but you won't be able avoid it happening again, titanium just doesn't conduct heat well enough.
>>885781
>titanium just doesn't conduct heat well
This. I've never understood why people think it's a good material for cookware. Aluminum works just fine for me.
>inb4 Alzheimer's FUD

Go stainless, titanium doesn't fair well in fire and will probably warp when it's smashed down in your bag. Don't go aluminum either.
How to prepare for mountaineering while living in flat lands?
>move
Cant, in graduate school
Currently I do:
Strength training 3x per week (texas method)
Stair climbing/sprints/cardio 2x per week
What more
>>884211
>how do I learn how to swim without getting into water
Buy this book and read it twice. He goes ALL OVER training methods, exercises, heart rate monitoring intended for the physical demands of mountaineering. Some of the stuff from normal strength training applies, but mountaineering is much more about endurance than knocking out a higher 1RM in the gym.

This thread is for all things outdoors in Britain.

Anyone been on the south west coastal path? I was thinking about doing some of it in the summer and wondering if anyone has any experience.
I was just about to make on of these. Not enough /Brit/s on here.
I've never done any winter walking before, but was hoping to hit the Lake District in February and do some big walks (Helvellyn especially) with my girlfriend. What should we do to prepare, and what should we bring?
Trying to become more /out/, really want to get back into multiday kayak trips
Also go outdoors does a emergency service discount..... Ya I guess

There are a good few, but most of /out/ is american.
Waterproofs and layers will be your friend. Make sure you apply waterproofing to everything and have a tarp near the top of your rucksack so you can quickly make a shelter if it rains heavily or you need to stop to make food.
Be ready to be wet, cold and miserable, but if you're lucky it will be kinda sunny and windy.
ITT post your home and other try to guess where you are from
lemme start XD

What i the best /Out Dogo?
Im in the process of getting a Husky puppy right now, looking forward to showing him the great /Out/doors.
Also post your hiking dogos.
I owned a husky/chow mix when I was growing up. She was dying of cancer at 7 years of age, hanging out in the back yard. A neighbor walked by our house with her dog. My dog wasn't having any of that shit. Proceeded to grab the bottom of our chain link fence in her mouth, bend it up, crawl underneath it, sprint to the street and fuck that other dog up.
6 months later I wrapped her in her favorite blanket and buried her under a tree in the back yard.
Man. I miss that dog.

I shoot most of the dogs I see outside.

That's one beautiful dog.

Is anybody really going /out/ in Halloween?
I was thinking of heading up to the woodlands. There's some woodsprites and willowisps who like to have a good time. If you've never drank ether straight from the nethers, you haven't lived; it's a concentrated spirit made from life force, gets you nice and drunk. At midnight everyone gets buck nude and the Caller blows his horn to summon spirit moose and we ride into the dawn.
Bretty good time.

I'm leaving candy out in a basket with a note saying to take a fair amt of candy. I'm not in the mood for visitors this year. Little kid costumes are cute but I'd rather lie down on the sofa and watch stupid scary movies with my dog.
they don't celebrate halloween here, I should be alright.
What's the most effective way to counter global warming and help polar bears and shit by donating/spending money?
I like animals and stuff, but I'm concerned that corrupt organizations like WWF will steal my money if I let them.
What do I do, /out/?
Go live with a polar bear for a year to figure out what it's basic needs are then buy some of them for it
The only way to solve global warming is for all environmentalists to kill themselves. Kill yourself right now faggot and save the planet
>>886101
That's not very cool, buddy.
what do /out/. ive gone out before but when i did it was in the UP of michigan, and south west Missouri. now im stuck in the middle of a goddamn cornfield with nothing more than over grown drainage ditches and tree lines. its good for hunting coyotes, ducks and geese but i crave hiking for miles mindlessly in a wooded areas. the UP was my favorite and Missouri was nice too.
unfortunatally circumstances have it that ill be stuck in the middle of pic related for a few years (min of 5). and that circle is a solid 50mil radius. i need something to feed the itch, anyone from around here that can give me some advice on where best places to go /out/

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (near)
Hiawatha national forest (north)
Shawnee national forest (south)

Post them comfy feels, /out/
>out on the boat with not a noise from civilization hearing the faint splashing of your boat rocking in the current while you smoke cigarettes and think about all the deep fried catfish you'll be having later
>feeling the chill of the morning fog your nose and cheeks as you walk from your campsite as the sun rises, bundled up in your jacket and blanket
I really want to take up scuba diving.
Any hints or advice?
Do PADI, and the nitrox cert is worth it.
>>884874
Make sure the center you go to gives you good gear. A well fitting wet suit makes diving much more pleasurable. What part of the world are you in? I have been diving in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK (with seals!), where it is usually cold as fuck. And everyone from SSI will say PADI is shit and vice versa. They will both take a lot of money and give you little, but still worth it. Remember that experience is much more important than certificates.
And single most valuable thing I learned was balance, how to make sure you are horizontally in the water without effort. It saves you a shitton of air.
>>884882
Please for the love of god dont do what this guy says. The last thing the diving community needs is more PADI divers. Im not saying that all PADI divers are bad or anything its just that a basic open water PADI cert takes no time and produces very unaware and ill equiped divers. PADI isnt bad if you follow through with the program and take more courses but for a basic cert SDI/TDI certs are the way to go. They are a more technically inspired certification and the courses are much longer and more in depth for a basic open water cert compared to PADI. Dont be a Pay and dive instantly cuck.

Anybody else have anything to add to the Pastebin or Imgur? I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly and trout. Just a summary of good spots to target, how to fish those spots, some simple rigs, and a good tackle setup for the beginner.
