Hey /out/, I was thinking about trying out hunting soon since I've never been. I plan to use a 12ga pump action since that is the only gun available to me. What game would you recommend to a first time hunter? I hear squirrel is a good choice since they are plentiful and it is good practice for hunting bigger game later on. Would you recommend this or going straight on to big game or something else completely? Also what choke and size shot would be best for different game?
Alright you got a lot going on here.
First things first a 12 gauge is a poor choice for squirrel, can it be done? Yeah sure but shotguns aren't what you want to use for small game. If you absolutely have no choice go grouse or pheasant hunting or hunt some sort of winged creature. If you can get the couple hundred bucks for a .22 rifle get that it's great for pretty much all small game. Or get an air rifle those are good for squirrel and chipmunks, are cheaper than a firearm and don't require all the paperwork. Large game is possible with a 12 gauge but you are going to need buckshot or slugs, I'm assuming you don't happen to have a slug barrel so buckshot is the better choice. Ideally you'd be using a rifle for this too because shotguns have a much more limited range and are going to make killing large game harder. I would really recommend doing even a little bit of research.

First find the hunting regulations for where you live.
Second a 12 gauge will utterly destroy a squirrel.
Third chokes are dependent on the conditions. Far away target more choke close target less choke. Untill you know what you are hunting and how to hunt it you wont know what choke you need. Your shotgun might not even accept different chokes.
Fourth the kind of shells you need such as low brass, high brass, heavy load, light load, shot size and shot type has the same problems as your choke. Different game different shells, different laws different shells, different gun different shells.
Also even if your area does not require it I highly suggest taking a hunters education class. They will give you an overview on cleaning game and firearms safety as well as info on hunting laws. They are cheap (Texas has them for $10) and the instructors are normally willing to help guide new hunters in the right direction after class if you still have some questions.
>Have a family farmed passed down since my great grandparents
>Basically grew up there
>Always dream about living there if I didn't have to worry about money
>Just chilling building shit and growing a big old garden and an orchard
>Hunt whenever
>Stuck in college
>Hate it
>Dread some day I might have to sell the property because I can't afford it
Why is life cruel /out/
Shouldn't A multi-generational farm be paid for by now?
>Why is life cruel /out/
Because you choose to focus on negative things.

Yeah but taxes are high, and it's an old house built in like the 50's or 60s and needs maintenance. Not horribly pressing it's just the fear that what if one day it came down to it
So where is a good place to get a good picnic blanket? Preferably around 20 bucks.
Just by a tarp or cut open a garbage bag faggot
Walmart 5x7 Nylon UL tarp <$10

I have a Vango Banshee 200 for camping and i've lost it's bag. Anyone know where i can buy another bag for it or at least one with the same size? ive already checked the vango spares site and they only have poles.
>>893178
Do they have a customer service email? Ask them if you can buy one directly or order it from somewhere.
they have two years warranty, maybe write the customer support.
also, I just bought a helix.
I bought it because it was a good deal but I initially wanted a banshe.
how do they compare ?
Was homeless for a while with a Banshee.
Now I fucking hate Vango.

I've always loved the idea of having a bow and arrow. Where can I get a good one that is easy to maintain? Initial starting cost doesn't matter to me.
>>893090
You can find ideas in books.
>>893096
Hahaha
There's already a bow thread.

Any good places out east? I'm from Maryland and not looking to go extremely far. Any recommendations?
>>892690
maine
the only decent east coast state for out
>>892695
I always hear good things about upstate NY and western PA.

The Appalachian Trail was good, but sadly I've only back packed there once. The Shenandoah trails throughout Virginia are good too, the views are nice.
Ideally I'd love to hike both, but which one would you say is more worth taking a break from school and quitting my job for?
Leaning towards AT first but I'd love to hear from people who have done either or both.
If you're looking for great views you should try the LSD. It'll be like nothing you've ever seen before.

I'm more looking to regain confidence in myself, lose weight, and take a step back from it all to re-evaluate my life and how I want to spend it while working towards a slow and steady goal with a definitive and physical beginning and end.
Pct for the scenery my dude
Hey /out/, Europoor here.
How viable is a pellet rifle for home defence purposes?
You'd probably be better off with a sword desu
>>891813
If you keep a loaded one at hand and use it only at close quarters... it's gonna sting like a bitch. A strong pellet gun using pigeon hunting ammuniton aimed at soft parts of the body might actually do quite some damage.
I imagine getting shot by the strongest pellet gun i've used would be like getting stapped in the stomach pretty hard with a knitting needles.
So in short, if you're going to be putting some sort of weapon next to your bed, make it a baseball bat.
I guess it would be fine for shooting tresspassers in the calves, but that wouldn't exactly be self defence.
>>891816
I meant stabbed obviously.
Where can I buy Mre in europe?
I don't even need it I just wanna try them.
amazon. ebay.
>>891810
On amazon they're like 50€ a pack, nothing on ebay.
>>891811
Those are probably cases. Not sure if any of the smaller vendors will ship to europe. But a good portion of military surplus sites for the US sell MREs. You'll just have to poke around. A Single MRE should cost you no more than 10-15 USD.
When did "survivial" become the no. 1 outdoorsman meme?
>8" to 12" knives that weight a full pound or more

>bulk purchases of paracord because muh lanyards and handle wraps

Nobody that would want to survive in a long term emergency scenario should risk even a thick bladed full tang blade batoning, especially if it's the only bladed tool you have

Now that we have a female president, life is going to be unbearable for MGTOWs .
We must finally get our commune going.
Where shall we move to anons?

Poor liberal... so broken up about Hillfaggotry losing the election he's created an illusionary world where she actually won.
Find a support group, little buddy. You need some assistance.

since feb 16 ive been living in homeless hostiles as a learning experience because fuck the 9-5. I'm 20 and ready to take my life to the next step.
I plan on building a spot innawoods where i can hunt, trap and grow my own veg.
In summer then I'll be prepared to grow my own peas, beans and ganja and will head off to somewhere like jamaica to WWOOF.
I have to stay in the UK over winter because im applying for a grant to start up my own "business" which will be a personal brand i offer holistic lifestyle and exercise coaching and advice (which ill qualify in with said £) and mentoring.
I've never done anything like this but have wanted to for as long as i can remember.
I've got an amazing rucksack (karrimor sabre 60-100) and orderd the TBS Boar (pic related)last night. got a cheapo tarpauling which ill upgrade to the aussie hoochie and get an axe etc, a hennessey hammock and an alright milsurp sleeping bag. my roll mat needs repairing.
anyone care to share similar stories and advice?
Sorta know where to start but all help is greatly appreciated.

Your plan is retarded, but it's probably the only situation that anyone ever really needs a bushcraft knife. Good luck.

Go into more detail on how its retarded if you will?
interested to hear some opinions and see what holes can be poked
What is the best water filtration system for backpacking trips?
Personally I like my sawyer mini.
sawyer's are a fantastic size and weight, but practically are only are okay if you have 2 or fewer people, it's not too hot (i.e. you don't go through a lot of water), and there aren't any mosquitoes.
my last backpacking trip my cousin brought pic related, and it's immediately jumped to the top of my shopping list. fuck rolling any more sawyer bags while being swarmed by mosquitoes.
I use the sawyer squeeze. I fill a 2 liter evernew water bag with dirty water, screw the filter on it, and then filter the water into two clean smart water bottles.
