I want to start an environmental organization for native plants and animals but it seems totally pointless in America, even though it's needed, because Americans don't care about or hate nature or just think it's something to destroy for their amusement. Am I right? Is it a waste of time to even bother unless I fund it all myself?

Join your local extention and help remove invasive plants/ fundraise instead of posting memes about a bunch of mouthwash drinkers.
>>
>>883135
I already do that. I want to do way more. But to do what I want requires a lot of money I don't have. And I'm not feeling optimistic about securing donations, given how anti-nature America is.

Hey Sc/out/s,

I usually wear contacts, but such is not convenient when I'm innawoods for an extended period of time. What do you guys and gals use to correct your vision while out? I have a guttural revulsion towards glasses that look like high speed low drag sunglasses...
27 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Just do what a normal woodsman would do; call upon the strength of your spirit animal, kill the strongest beast of the forest and take from him his eyes to replace your inferior pair.
>>
I just wear my glasses... if I'm fishing or near water or mountaineering I tie a piece of string to each arm so if they slide down my nose they don't fall off. Ditto for my prescription sunglasses.
>>
>>881937
Thanks, I'll try that and let you know how it goes.

>>881942
Yeah I mean I figured that's what most people did, I just feared for the extreme buyers remorse if there was somehow one type or brand that was best for such things.

I'm gonna get a pair of boots.

Are there any particular brands you've had a good experience with or would advise against?

Also I live in Ireland so mainly damp and wet climate. With that said - leather or synthetics?

holy shit

boots are boots

They are disposable consumables. Different boots made differently with different lasts will fit different people and their different feet differently.

Find one that works for you.

Don't expect anon to tell you what works for you

Looking for a backpack that can be used for a small weekend hike but also a longer thru hike. I was looking at the Osprey Atmos AG 65, is Osprey a good brand for backpacks?
63 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
>>877811

Osprey's okay if you can deal with some of the idiocy that comes with some of their designs. When ever they come out with something new, they fix some complaints of their previous packs only to fuck up something else. They also don't fit me very well at all. Some people love them, most people use them because their friends say they are good, many hate them.
>>
>>877811
They tend to over design little fiddly details but overall they're very good packs and they have one of the best warranties in the business.

I'd recommending trying one on first if you have the opportunity, though. It may be a good pack but it might not fit you personally that well.
>>
What are some other decent brands I should be looking at?

Why arent you full /out/ yet.

Why are you still living in a city.

I like the city life. I like my job, I like streets and cafes and people. I like hustle and bustle, I like reveling in the combined architectual, cultural, and industrial achievements of mankind, and of our society. I like tall buildings and ferry rides buskers, I like being able to flirt with cute boys working at the supermarket and then bump into them at the pub on the weekend.

I love /out/ too, but I go /out/ for completely different things and completely different experiences and reasons. Neither one replaces the other for me.

seeing as /out/ seems to be 80% people who have never spent a night outside in their lives taking advice from 19% dudes who dick around in the woods on weekends with milsurp and consider themselves "outdoorsmen" I think it's time for an /out/ PSA thread.

>if your pack weighs more than 25lbs, youre an idiot
>if you carry a hatchet or saw innawoods and you dont have a specific purpose for it, youre an idiot
>milsurp gear is only acceptable for hobo-tier budgets and even then there are usually better options
>any kind of pack with MOLLE or with "tactical" or "assault" in the name is cringey and a bad decision for civilian backpackers
>external frames in 2016 are a bad decision
>GoRuck is overpriced gimmicky trash
>a knife longer than 3 inches is a compensation tool
>sleeping pads are for insulation and you are not hardcore for not using one, just dumb
>military boots are unnecessarily heavy and not even used in the military unless required
>you should use a cannister stove on the trail, youre not daniel boone, fire cooking is not practical
>camping and hiking is not as dangerous as this board pretends and you dont need to make an advice thread for your first weekend trip

anything i missed?

walking out in the woods to camp for a night or two in your local state park in good weather is not remotely dangerous and doesnt require ELITE /OUT/ SKILLS
>fire cooking is not practical
Correct. There are people on this board who think they are going to collect timber, start a fire, wait for coals, hang a pot from a stick or something every time they need to cook a pot of noodles

Hey sc/out/s, I was browsing a local auction site and I came across the knife in the pic. I really like the edge shape and overal aesthetic of the knife, however I am not sure of it's intended use.
The seller claims it to be French from the 70s/80s. 29cm overall length, 17cm blade.
Is it a utility blade? Or perhaps just a really fancy steak knife? I'm probably gonna buy it, because it's pretty cheap regardless, but I'd love to hear what my fellow sc/out/s think the original purpose of this knife is.

Hello /out/, fa/tg/uy here.

I'm going to be running a pen and paper game soon where players will be basically adrift on the ocean with 1700's tech, at the best, for years at a time.

How would they go about avoiding scurvy?

Will simply eating fresh fish caught from the ocean prevent it, or is there something else that must be done?

What vitamins and nutrients would they not be able to get just from fish, and where could they otherwise get those vitamins and nutrients?

so many bait threads, today

>>884085

I think by far the most important aspect is the location of your player's abandonment. Caribbean? Pacific? Antarctic? etc etc. Makes all the difference.

This isn't a bait thread and it's the first time I've been to /out/.

Is this the wrong board for /out/door survival, Anon?

Hey guys regular sc/out/ here asking for some advice.

So I will do this day hike that is 18km (~11mi) long, no problem here since I'm pretty used to 40+km hikes, the problem begins because I want to do it with some leather working boots that are prone to fuck my feet every time I wear them for long hours.

How do I make it work so I can have an enjoyable hike?

>Inb4 do not wear your boots
Out of question, I want the additional weight and roughness.

Could you fine lads point me in a direction to start my /out/ life off, stuff like books, websites, pdfs or even just useful shit to know.
