Most people aren't, maybe unless you live in some flyover state backwater where the fad has finally just arrived. Peak Hipster was about 8 years ago and that guy probably had 2 kids (one on the spectrum, and one with lactose intolerance or a peanut allergy) and moved back to the suburbs.

Ultralight is cool, bragging about it isn't.

Ultralight is nice for a few items, can really cut pack weight. it is however extremely expensive for much of it.

Cut pack weight where you can, and what you can afford.

Gear doesn't make you experienced. My 75 year old uncle could run circles around most people, while carrying his 50 year old canvas tent and 30 year old sleeping bag.
