What ultimately killed Sega? What is all the failed hardware after the Genesis or was it the ridiculous development cost of Shenmue? I think if they never made Shenmue they would still be in the hardware business.

>What ultimately killed Sega?
Long story short: literally themselves.
>>3613410
Years after years of poor decisions
Shenmue had nothing to do with it. The DC just wasn't making enough money on hardware sales. They had a hard time getting people to trust them with how poorly the Saturn was handled in the west. The combined competition of three other major consoles didn't help either.
Is there anyone kind enough to give me a brief guide to getting into Wizardry? I've been interested in it for a while. Which games are essential, which ones to pass? Are the Japanese versions worthwhile?
1 is one of the most groundbreaking games.
2 and 3 are practically addons as they originally required importing a party. They add nothing beyond extra dungeons and monsters and a few twists here and there.
4 is kind of an insult to people asking for a bigger challenge. They minutely planned the game to be just barely beatable by experienced players. Also interesting as an inversion of the normal formula since you play as a villain encountering groups of heroes.
5 was the first real attempt at progressing the series. Some aspects were rebalanced and extras such as NPCs added.
6 took things fruther. The game system was remade from scratch with more races and classes and focus on skills. The town was removed and the world is a single connected piece instead of separate dungeon floors.
7 continued the story from 6 and gave you a planet to explore with less linearity than the previous games.
8 is the culmination of the previous two games.
Japanese versions are superior for the first 6 games.
I would generally recommend stating with 5, either on the FM Towns or PS1, since it serves as a bridge between 1 and 6 and is somewhat less frustrating.
After that you can go to 1 or 6 depending on what style you want. Play 2 and 3 if you crave for more and 4 if you feel like you're up for it (which you probably won't).
6-7-8 should be played in order but you don't have to play each until the bitter end.
>>3613370
get the PS2 wizardry its the best one imo.
>>3613370
Play 1 and 2 on NES or the better version on GBC. Mapping is easier and some of the prices for spells early on are cheaper I think in the GBC version.
3 sucks ass because you have to keep using characters of different alignments (good, neutral, evil) I think to progress and it got boring.
4 is evil. It's pure unadulterated evil. See this long play: -
http://lparchive.org/Wizardry-IV/Update%2001/
5 on the SNES is doable with some help. I found it brutally hard but okay.
6 and 7 I can't speak
8 is fantastic with only a few hiccups. There is one or two story elements I hate, and you can't keep skills if you change classes, but past that it's pretty damn good.
The PS2 version like >>3613424 said is great. I found some grinding needs with it, but it has replay value to get all story plots down. There are some interface irritations, but besides that it's pretty good and worth a shot.
ITT: failed features of successful consoles
I remember using that for the mystery gif on Pokemon Gold with friends.
Too bad the battery died and I lost everything.
>>3613228
whats that infrared?
>>3613229
I remember using it for this, too.
And nothing else ever again.
does anything new become retro in 2017?
Retro isn't about age and dates. It's about style and tone. Nothing that isn't retro now will magically become so just because a calendar changes over.
>>3612915
Says who
Retro is literally defined as 15 years
Vintage is like 15-25
Antique is like 50 and over
>>3612915
>Retro
>Styles relating to the recent past
What are some games like the original Silent Hill? Preferably where you get to explore a town.
>>3612864
SH1 is from 1999, so you won't find retro SH clones.
X-Files Resist or Serve on PS2 is very SH like.
>>3612864
Shenmue.
>>3612876
OP did ask for "games"
Spider man total carnage or whatever

Spider-Man vs Kingpin on the genesis
The Winter Ball is approaching, /vr/. Who are we going with?
I was thinking maybe /toy/ or /m/ but they tend to go with each other.

Fuck if I know, but we can check and ask. Sounds good, though. We'll just break out the chiptunes together.
For anyone interested, a Rockman X3 prototype was released today.

>>3612457
I want the MMX proto with white city. whites only.
>>3612474
I'd love to see that as well, but I wouldn't hold my breath. SNES X-series prototypes seem to be quite rare, especially considering this version of X3 took 20 years to reach the internet and there seem to be very little documentation of the physical prototype carts to begin with, but who knows.

How do they even get their hands on shit like this

Giana sisters DS is best giana sisters
>>3612640
No it's not, it's pretty mediocre.
>>3612016
Kinda interesting that a blatant ripoff went on to become its own respectable franchise.
So I saw it mentioned a few times that the DX version of Link's Awakening is an inferior product. Can anyone explain to me why?
>>3611924
I think some people find the monochrome of the original better serves the game's dreamlike quality. You can't go wrong with either version.
The DX version is fine. Personally, I like the color option better than 4 shades of grey.
The screen warp glitch in the original version adds replay value I guess.
Hypothetically, if they released a Super NES Classic/Mini, which games should be on it?
Suoer Mario.
>>3611679
No.
Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG
Super Metroid
F-Zero
Super Castlevania IV
Final Fantasy III/VI
Chrono Trigger
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Earthbound
Street Fighter II Turbo or Super Street Fighter II
Star Fox
Mega Man X
Donkey Kong Country
Harvest Moon
anything else?
Tanks are cool.
Video games are cool.
Tank video games? Oh shit.
Talk about video games with tanks in them. Fast-paced action games are prefered, but strategy and simulation games are welcome as well.
Tank Force is an excellent arcade game from Namco, that plays very similar to their previous tank games, Tank Battalion and Battle City. One or two players move around a destructible maze and clear out the enemy tanks. Two players cooperate, but also compete to "win" each level by getting the most kills. There are bosses, and lots of cool power-ups, double shot, missile, 4-way shot, and even a "sonic" gun that can shoot through walls.
>>3611127
Damn, I always thought the GB Battle City was the only game from the franchise.
>>3611127
M1 Tank Platoon for DOS. It was part of my childhood.

This thread is for the discussion of CRT TVs, no PVMemes. Let's talk best brands, HD vs SD, flat screen vs curved, etc..
You want a late model non-flat Trinitron with component and S-video inputs and you want to familiarize yourself with the service menuBecause that's 98% of the way to being a PVM
how do i fix a trinitron experiencing flyback controller driiiiiift
Bought a HUGE trinitron off craigslist but despite by best efforts it fell over in the back of my car and no longer works :( Trash it or try to fix it?
