Is there anyone kind enough to give me a brief guide to getting into Wizardry? I've been interested in it for a while. Which games are essential, which ones to pass? Are the Japanese versions worthwhile?
>>
1 is one of the most groundbreaking games.
2 and 3 are practically addons as they originally required importing a party. They add nothing beyond extra dungeons and monsters and a few twists here and there.
4 is kind of an insult to people asking for a bigger challenge. They minutely planned the game to be just barely beatable by experienced players. Also interesting as an inversion of the normal formula since you play as a villain encountering groups of heroes.
5 was the first real attempt at progressing the series. Some aspects were rebalanced and extras such as NPCs added.
6 took things fruther. The game system was remade from scratch with more races and classes and focus on skills. The town was removed and the world is a single connected piece instead of separate dungeon floors.
7 continued the story from 6 and gave you a planet to explore with less linearity than the previous games.
8 is the culmination of the previous two games.

Japanese versions are superior for the first 6 games.
I would generally recommend stating with 5, either on the FM Towns or PS1, since it serves as a bridge between 1 and 6 and is somewhat less frustrating.
After that you can go to 1 or 6 depending on what style you want. Play 2 and 3 if you crave for more and 4 if you feel like you're up for it (which you probably won't).
6-7-8 should be played in order but you don't have to play each until the bitter end.

get the PS2 wizardry its the best one imo.
>>
>>3613370
Play 1 and 2 on NES or the better version on GBC. Mapping is easier and some of the prices for spells early on are cheaper I think in the GBC version.
3 sucks ass because you have to keep using characters of different alignments (good, neutral, evil) I think to progress and it got boring.
4 is evil. It's pure unadulterated evil. See this long play: -
http://lparchive.org/Wizardry-IV/Update%2001/
5 on the SNES is doable with some help. I found it brutally hard but okay.
6 and 7 I can't speak
8 is fantastic with only a few hiccups. There is one or two story elements I hate, and you can't keep skills if you change classes, but past that it's pretty damn good.
The PS2 version like >>3613424 said is great. I found some grinding needs with it, but it has replay value to get all story plots down. There are some interface irritations, but besides that it's pretty good and worth a shot.

>Play 1 and 2 on NES or the better version on GBC.
What about the Japanese remade versions for SNES or PS1?
>>
>>3614298
snes version is sweet. theres a translation mod somewhere.
>>
>>3613404
>5 was the first real attempt at progressing the series.
You could argue that it was 4 and some things it did were too hardcore even for the hardcore players so they were imminently dropped in subsequent entries.
>>
>>3613424
The only bad thing about it I can say is the slow (by classic Wiz standards) combat.
>>
>>3614318
Hardcore does not mean bullshit difficulty. W4 was not even pretending to be balanced

Is Wizardry IV the first game in which the good ending is literally pic related?
>>
Wizardry VII is so hilariously shit.
>>
>>3614102
If you want an easier game you probably shouldn't be playing Wizardry.

The common sense in 3 is to have a neutral core party with fighters, samurai, thief and mage and swap out priest or force him to change his alignment.
>>
>>3614541
I find it weird how much praise the game gets. It's missing a lot of the thrill that made Wizardry and most of the additions are just plain annoying.

Start with the first one. This guy will be your best friend. You can beat it in a few hours, because 80% of the dungeon is complete filler and offers little.
>>
>>3614750
Just skip the game if you don't actually want to play it.

Speaking of this, what about all the jap games? which Wizardry games should I play if I just want the classic dungeon crawling gameplay? Which of all the jap games are worth trying?

And what about the games by former jap wizardry devs, like Elminage, and Class of Heroes? (I know it's not /vr/ just go with it)
>>
>>3614891
I can vouch for Elminage. Wizardry gameplay and can play lightning fast.
>>
>>3614298
Never had access to them so I didn't even know they existed.
>>
>>3615060
But you think you're in a position to recommend the GBC port?
>>
I gave the book back to the Dark Savant figuring it was the "correct" ending. I was in for a surprise. Long live the Dark Savant.
>>
>>3615094
Yes. I tried them and beat them through emulation. I had beaten the original Wizardry 1 and 2 through the NES back in the day, and I was pleasantly surprised about some of the upgrades for the GBC version. Try it and see if you like it.
>>
>>3615663
I actually saved before the final battle, and played through all three endings.
I won't ruin which one I liked the best. Spoilers and all that.

Why was Wizardry so darn popular in Japan anyways? More so than say Ultima?

I think maybe because it was a cleaner slate than Ultima.
>>
>>3615739
It's hard and the interface is easy.
>>
>>3615735
looks like snes
>>
>>3615809
oh you're right, and I found a download: http://nicoblog.org/snes-rom/wizardry-vi-bane-of-the-cosmic-forge-english-patched/
>>
>>3615739

it's addicting, I think is the reason

It's much simpler than Ultima and appeals to Japan's kind of autism

Also yeah the interface, it's actually really easy when you get used to it
>>
Does anyone know where I can download an ISO of New Age of Llylgamyn? This is the one that has IV and V, I think.

What in the hell is this shit
Was Wizardry 6 made by completely different people?
>>
>>3617506
Robert Woodhead and Andrew Greenberg were no longer involved.
David Bradley was the main designer but he had worked on Wizardry 5 before.
>>
>>3618282
What happened with those guys? 6-8 were ass and Japanese companies handled the series better.
>>
>>3618397
Hahahahah, no.
>>
>>3613370

>>3618306
>>
>>3618397
Robert Woodhead started an anime company.
>>
>>3618397
Now come on. 8 had a lot going for it. It had maybe two story flaws and a couple technical issues but it was a damn good game.
>>
>>3618986
8 was done by yet another team without Bradley's involvement.
There was also an aborted game called Stones of Arnhem.
>>
>>3614541

Unlike you, who are seriously shit.
>>
>>3618397
>6-8 were ass
They're the best games of the series faggot.
>>
>>3619124
What's good about 7?
