This thread is for the discussion of CRT TVs, no PVMemes. Let's talk best brands, HD vs SD, flat screen vs curved, etc..
>>
You want a late model non-flat Trinitron with component and S-video inputs and you want to familiarize yourself with the service menu

Because that's 98% of the way to being a PVM
>>
how do i fix a trinitron experiencing flyback controller driiiiiift

Bought a HUGE trinitron off craigslist but despite by best efforts it fell over in the back of my car and no longer works :( Trash it or try to fix it?
>>
>>3610262

That I'd very unfortunate. Getting parts for something that old would be way harder than finding a new one.
>>
>>3610247

Knowing how to work the service menu on old CRTs is key, you are right about that.

Also, 98% way to a PVM? Probably true. A consumer TV with component/s video that dosent have 70k+ hours on it sounds more appealing. Also, shipping a CRT seems expensive and risky.
>>
I tried a couple times to get a backup CRT from the side of the road
>oh they prob just threw out a perfectly good one cuz its old
But i guess around here people dont throw shit away unless its actually broken

>HD vs. SD
HD fucks up the picture just like an LCD HDTV does.
>>
>>3610286

Your damn right it does. It has none of the benefits of a CRT but all the negatives of an HD TV. A lot of people assume they are fantastic until they actually try one out, myselfb included
>>
>>3610291
They are fantastic for not-retro games, to be fair. But they aren't worth having a 500lb behemoth in your house to play PS3 or 360 on.
>>
Most Japanese made chassis are really good. I have a Sharp set, 27U-S610, with every input needed for retro gaming. Has a service menu for tweaking picture as well. A little too large though. 240p and 480i stuff looks amazing on it.
>>
Anyone have experience with JVC I'art flat CRTs?

Some say they are better than Trinitrons even though they are shadow mask and don't have an input switching button on the chassis.

What's the problem with shadow mask? This board dosent seen to like it very much but I haven't seen a reason why other than "its better"
>>
My Dad's CRT TV has white lines across the top of the screen

After some searching around, I think the problem is a busted blanking circuit

How hard are those to repair/replace? Is it worth fixing, or should I just get him a new CRT?
>>
Is AOC bad for gaming?
>>
>>3610598
Worse colors, but slightly sharper.
>>

Nothing wrong with shadow mask. I have a Nanao MS8 and it looks amazing. Shit convergence on the outer edges though, but that's Nanao for you I guess

Friendly reminder to test any sets you intend to buy/pickup.

I got a Sony kv24fs120 off a neighbor a few weeks ago and didn't get to test it, and found out my problem isn't fixable with the service menu in a CRT general.

Take a Dreamcast or something running the 240p test suite.
>>
Is this the thread where I ask how to find a PVM locally?
>>

Trinimemes are overrated. Got me a nice Sharp. Its the fucking tits
>>
>>3610303
Less lag?
>>
>>3610596
Why don't we all use the setup best for us instead of judging each other like neckbeards?
>>
>>3610592
I actually bought one of those at Goodwill because it seemed like a quality TV with a variety of inputs and it appeared to be in good condition but it was one of a very few TVs I've bought that way that did not work. It was also surprisingly light compared to other similarly sized TVs which lead me to believe the glass was probably thinner and perhaps it suffered some damage to its neck.

>>3610598
The main reason is that you get squarer pixels with aperture grille

>>
>>3610697
hey OP, I'm sorry. I'm used to the elitist assholes that you usually get around here. I have quite a few CRTs, some of them PVMs, some of them consumer sets. I think they all have pros and cons! I'm actually in the middle of repairing this Hantarex 37in. check it, it has pincushion issues and a bit of a purity thing on the upper side but it's getting a lot better already

>>
>>3610730

Depends on what the price is I would imagine. Imbjealous of anyone who lives in an area where they can buy a PVM without shipping it. The joy of not having a CRT smashed by the mail...
>>
>>3610730
hint: if someone knows what they have, you probably won't get a good deal on it
>>
>>3610713

I'd love to have some 30+ inches but there's no way I'd be able to lift something that massive. Pretty much the rule I use to limit myself on the size of CRT I have is whether or not I can carry it myself.

When it comes to consumer sets, would you say there's a correlation between screen size and picture quality? Also, would a flat screen look as good as a regular set if it were adjust properly via the service menu?
>>
>>3610738
These are great conversation points actually. let's go over them, and remember I don't claim to be 100% correct:
You aren't asking about it, but I think your rule is fair. I actually can't lift that Hantarex myself, so I guess that'd be my upper limit haha (you could also start lifting I guess)

Regarding consumer sets: I think there's a correlation between screen size and picture quality regardless of the CRT you're using. Scratch that, I think that correlation exists regardless of the display technology you're using. well... vector CRTs might have been an exception maybe? that's highly speculative though because I think they never manufactured very big vector CRTs.

As for the flat screen question, there's this thing where supposedly flat CRTs are more prone to exhibit geometry/focus issues around the corners, but I think these were solved eventually. For reference, my Nanao MS8 (which is as curvy as they come) is kinda messy on the edges, while my Philips 202p4 which has a flat diamondtron tube is pretty much flawless. Dreamcast games look breathtaking on it.
>>
hey guys..

i just found a PVM-1442QM for sale in my city.
does anyone here have experience with these things? how is the built in sound? it looks pretty basic.. seems to be only mono too if the connections on the back are anything to go by.
do any of these pvm models offer stereo sound?

>>
>>3610738
I did the same, and stuck with 27" for the longest. But I helped a neighbor clean out some of her old junk the other week, and she had a kv-32fs200. It was in a spare bedroom on the second floor.

I'm not going to lie and say it was easy to pick up and carry by myself. It was not. The damned thing supposedly weighed over 160 lbs. But I still managed it, and it certainly gave me a bit more confidence.

Then again, I also had to move a kd-34xbr960, and I needed an appliance dolly for that one. Even though it only weighs like 40 more pounds, I couldn't navigate stairs or doorways with it. I did manage to lift it alright using a hump strap to get it onto a tv stand, but I would not be comfortable with having to do so again.
>>
>>3610748
Are you serious? There's a CRT general every day AND you made your own thread, and you still posted in the one thread that said not to post PVMs?
>>
>>3610758

yes. i am very serious.
>>
Excellent, I was staying away from flat screens since I assumed they all had distortion issues. I'm glad that these issues are not as bad as I thought because mose CRTs with component input are usually flat screens. I'd really love to find a 27 inch with component input for my genesis/SNES/virtual console.
>>
Is the display worse on larger TVs? Also, I hear that scanlines are pretty much non existant on anything 13 inches and under, how true is this?
>>
>>3610772
Panasonic CT-27D11E or similar models are pretty common non-flat screen CRTs with S-video and Component inputs.

I have one, and I notice them on craigslist and ebay now and then. Mine was manufactured in 2001. Has a headphone jack, too, which I find convenient for late night gaming without disturbing anyone.
>>
>>3610779
false. a 240p signal will still exhibit scanlines on a small tube, but you should obviously adjust your expectations, as it's all proportional
>>
>>3610785

Getting my hands on a set with a traditional curved screen and component inputs is pretty much my holy grail. I'd like to get a 14inch PVM for my desk and do have a 27-32 inch CRT for my main screen. Right now I'm making do with a 20 inch curved screen citizen TV with s video and a Toshiba flat screen, coincidently the same one they always have in the background on Gamesack. I found the Toshiba for free online but the electron gun is so fucking loud in that.

>Is the display worse on larger TVs?
screen size is more a matter of preference than objectively correlating better or worse. there are pros and cons to both, and those pros and cons vary between person

I prefer bigger tvs, this is a trinitron kv-32fs120. I think 240p looks great with the big thick scanliiiiiiines
>>
>>3610807

That looks pretty goddamn good.

I also wonder how long it will take before CRT TVs essentially become extinct, or if the same thing that is happening to retro game sales will happen to these TVs as well. I'd love for the production of CRTs to happen sometime in the future but I doubt that will ever be.

Component SD Trinitrons are rare, but RGB scart is extremely common.

HDCRTs really suffer with 240p but are great for 480p and up. I would love to see some tests comparing lag on a 480p signal with an HDCRT against an LCD.

Also, old anime looks great on them.
>>
>>3610598
Shadow mask screens rule. Got an aperture grille Sony and an LG with shadow mask. The LG is 10 times better. Aperture grille displays are too sharp for low res games.
>>3610631
Yeah... no.

No but you can run into trouble with geometry and convergence in larger sets.

How the fuck do you get into the service menu on a late model (~2006) Toshiba? I forget the exact model but it's a tiny fucker. I use it every day as my main TV because I'm poor and my only 1080p LCD is a 21" being occupied by my desktop PC.
>>
>>3612690
Search manualslib.com for any Toshiba model CRT. It's very likely the same method for all of them. You might also find the particular service manual for that model, too. They have quite a bit there, and have made my life much easier. If you cannot find the exact model, find one with the same chassis, and use it as a reference. I did this with my Panny, and it worked out pretty well overall.
>>
>>3610247
I've never had any issues with Geometry on my WEGA. But a curved TV does save you having to lift a minimum 90 pound object with all the weight in the front if you feel like moving it or something.

Take a typical Sony CRT TV: KV-36FS120

How do you decode the model number?

What does the first set of letter mean?
It's usually KV.
Sometimes its KD.
Rarely KW.

KV KW KD

The first set of numbers is the screen diagonal in inches.

What does the second set of letters mean?
It's usually FS(flat screen?) or FV or HS(high scan (480p!)) for flat screens and S or V for curved sets.
Sometimes its XS or XBR.
Rarely HD(high definition?), SXR, CX, or TW(Taiwan?).
Small sets usually have R, FS, FM, M, TR, RX, or VM.
Less commonly: RS, F, TS, RS, EXR, AD, PT or FA.
What the hell do all these mean?

The second set of numbers indicates the "quality"; higher indicating better. However this usually just means extra "features" like "purcolor" and "trusurround" that you should always turn off. In fact a higher number here may be worse if thinness of the set is a feature. This will cause Geometry and focus/convergence problems that a "lower" model won't have so bad.
>>
>>3616549

I guess I "collect" interesting TV's.

Mostly small portable ones really.

The main one I use is a 13" electrohome late model TV with built in DVD player.

Then I have a 8" Sony Trinitron.

I also have a Panasonic AG-500R which isn't technically a TV, but a "field monitor". It has a built in VCR. Someone else has one and it gets posted here occasionally.

CRT TV's are just cool. I kin of wish they still made them since I want a huge one. Maybe when I finally move.
