I remember using that for the mystery gif on Pokemon Gold with friends.
Too bad the battery died and I lost everything.
>>
>>3613228
whats that infrared?
>>
>>3613229

I remember using it for this, too.

And nothing else ever again.

Satellaview was kinda popular in Japan I think? It had support until 2001. But yeah, we saw nothing of that in the west.

Goemon's Great Adventure, my favorite game on the system, uses the d-pad.

Really only used that for The New Tetris but by god what a beast of a game was that. Worth the d-pad inclusion on it's own.

Satellaview almost had a European equivalent released, but NoE scrapped it for whatever reason.

Here's another one that was used so rarely Sony did away with the serial port in spite of its existence. I believe the PS2 fat could do this in a much greater range of games.
>>
>>3613552
The only game I remember ever supporting the link feature was like, C&C Red Alert: Retaliation.
>>
game boy camera
>>
>>3613541

It was a "mode" button to switch between 3 button or 6 button mode. Some games had problems with the 6 button.
>>
>>3613531
Also Mischief Makers which is fantastic.
>>
>>3613556
I believe it was mostly racing games that supported linking. I know the WipeOUT games used it and also one of the Armored Cores (specifically recall this one not needing two discs so it was particularly great).
Anyway, Gran Turismo 3 had it on PS2 so I would imagine they had it in the other two games.
>>
>>3613559
Not a feature, that was a stand-alone title.
>>
>>3613552
>>3613556
>>3613564
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Link_Cable
It did actually have fairly decent support, it just ended up being too inconvenient for typical users and they ditched the I/O port midway through the console's life anyway.

The PS2 was just normal LAN though, I think.
>>
>>3613562

I know, but it was also, essentially, another button. A shoulder button more specifically, it could have been used in some cool ways, but no developer ever realized that. Although again, only 1 shoulder button is also kind of derpy.
>>
>>3613530
I used to play the AKI wrestling games and they require a dpad, Mischief Makers too.
>>
>>3613848
I remember the Lost Vikings using it as a normal button, but nothing else that I can recall
>>
>>3613530

Very underused feature, basically the same concept as the WiiU gamepad.
>>
>>3613552
Not a total failure, some very good games with link up. Had friends who had put a hole through the wall and we could play DOOM in two different rooms. Totally rad.

The link cable got mostly forgotten later in the console's life so wasn't worth including in the PSone. Quite a shame, because the PSone is far more portable, and with portable LCDs actually much easier to be able to create a link setup!
>>
>>3613826
PS2 actually used 400 Mbps FireWire for console linking.

Very overspecified, expensive to license and was dropped fairly early in the system's lifespan.
>>
>>3613552
this was the only way I was able to play Rogue Trip and WipEout XL with my friends.
>>
>>3613530
Perfect Dark, my nigga. Using the C buttons for movement is just ass-backwards.
>>

>>
>>3613901
Firewire on PlayStation 2 was nice for Unreal Tournament but when LCD HD Monitors started to become cheap, we picked up quite a few of those and stuck to LAN games with even more players than Firewire.
>>
>>3613559
this guy right here, please. FUCKING PLEASE.
>>
>>3613883
there's one of those for sale at a weird gift shop / vape store at my hometown mall
>>
I know, it pretty much served its purpose regarding Pokemon and a handful of japanese titles, but it could have been so much more.

For starters, imagine all the possibilities with the GB Camera. Rare played with the idea for custom character textures to use in Perfect Dark.

My personal wish would have been to get a companion Zelda game for the GBC which interacts with the N64 game counterpart.
Essentially having two sets of dungeons, one on the go and one on the big screen. Link would be able to use his gizmos on both versions, but only as a bonus feature of course.
So you'd want to beat some GBC dungeons first to make N64 dungeons easier for example.

I liked the infrared port. It was kind of like a proto-streetpass. It doesn't really work unless you live in a densely populated Japanese city though.

The eReader is my one of my favorites, but I like collecting cards. It had some nice link ups to Animal Crossing. I think its main failure was that to have any use with a GBA game you needed two Gameboys. Might of worked better with a Game Genie style set up.
>>
>>3613239
Nintendo expansion ports weren't used in the US before the new millenium.
>>
>>3613981
Or Nintendy could have at least made a Super Gameboy style cartridge to work with it.

Well, there was already a thing which served this purpose called the WideBoy64.

It was only available to the gaming press and devs.
Reasonable decision honestly, as it uses a rather pricey Xilinx FPGA inside.
No way someone would buy this for a 175$ estimated.

Agree on the Transfer Pack tough, it's essentially a gateway for accessing cartridge memory over the controller.
This could have opened the possibility for a Super GBC 64 at the least.

PS1's parallel port, at least officially, Sony even removed it in later models.

nope, every Naomi game that had a Dreamcast port typically had VMU slot support.
>>
>>3613883
Definitely could have been used in better ways for a lot more games but I used it quite a lot. The few games that used it in a useful way did it well.
The DC to NGP link cable. Now there's a truly under used cable.

I remember having a Link Cable for Red Alert and Armored Core before I had a PC. When Xbox came out and used a standard RJ45 and could be linked to a hub or a switch for linking any number of consoles, I was in heaven.

That's one thing about the eastern consoles, they always included technology that was either outdated or unpopular whereas the Xbox tended to lift directly from PCs, making it much more universal. I assumed it would usher in a great era where consoles could be easily upgraded and linked, and then the Xbox 360 came out.

was it just my lonely childhood or the gb link was pretty useless? i only remember using it to get mew on pokemon, and any game that had a multiplayer feature seemed to be a rather complicated thing to play like that.
>>
>>3614947
Well, I don't know how much people actually used it, but I'd say the game link cable was what made Pokemon actually work. It would have just been some RPG otherwise. So it definitely paid off for Nintendo.
>>
>>3613530
Don't worry anon, I thought it was a good joke
>>
>>3613883
Wasn't there some group that did an LP of one of those weird multiplayer Zeldas on the GC and instead of four GBAs they used four other GCs all with GB Players and having all five consoles capture video?

That sounds like a fucking mess.
>>
>>3614679
Weren't there two versions of the DC's modem, one for phone lines and one for Ethernet?
>>
