Which era of retro was superior, 80s or 90s?
>>3617097
Late '80s/early '90s. 1985-1995 de best.
>>3617097
For games? Definitely the 90s.

Is it proper to place Brave Fencer Musashi under the same category as several of the Quintet games like Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma? And would Ys fit in the same category? Tell me what you think.
Also do you know of any other games that are similar?
Plus I have one question about BFM: what was the point of leveling up in that game? Does it actually make your attacks stronger or unlock anything useful in the game? Or is the leveling system just cosmetic?
No, sometimes, no thanks, yes, the point of leveling up is doing more damage and taking less damage and charging faster, it's pretty useful, particularly leveling Fusion and your Mind stat to charge as fast as possible since you're going to have to do a lot of that during one particular fight and some people have trouble mashing the button that much.

What kind of category?

Buyer's remorse.
The Neo Geo is an incredible system (literally arcade quality games in your house), but the majority of its best games have shown up in arcade perfect form in collections or standalone releases on other platforms, and even if they hadn't you can emulate them frame perfect for free.
It's a cool collector's piece I guess, but paying $1k is ripoff territory.
What are some of your favorite lesser-known games from the "big" companies? (Nintendo, Sega, Namco, etc.)
Time Scanner is a Sega arcade game that's one of the best video pinball games of all time. There's four playfields that are each two screens high, each one has its own multiball mode, the ball physics are excellent, and the music is great. The cabinet had a movable control panel allowing you to nudge left, right, and up. If you enjoy the 1980s System 11 pinball games from Williams, you definitely should try this game.

Youkai Douchuuki is Namco's first 16 bit arcade game and it's still my favorite retro game despite it's obscurity and having one or two minor flaws.
>>3616693
I think Spinball is the best Sonic game.
What's your favorite retro game that nobody's heard of?

Yōkai Dōchuuki is my favorite retro game, it just happens to be obscure.
I've been recently purchasing repros from Aliexpress and was aware that some snes/genesis don't include a battery to save the game. However, I was wondering if there is an easy way to solder a battery or equivalent onto the chip? Appreciate any help.
Also, repro thread if desired.
the chip looks like this. can take a better pic if needed
Let's rank the Metal Slug games. Best? Worst? Favorite ports?

Why is 2 so much better than X?

Out of all the consoles considered retro on /vr/, which is the best?
>>3616268
NES.
SNES. Easily.
>>3616268
I'm gonna go with SNES.
Was it better than the original?
>>3616226
It's so different it doesn't feel right comparing them.
It's good by its own merit, it's a nice experiment.
>>3616226
In some ways. The combat was better, the dungeons felt more sprawling and dangerous. I really like the music too. I think my biggest problem is how disconnected the map feels from the rest of the game. In the original Zelda you can explore every nook and cranny of the world whereas in Zelda II it's like just traveling from one point to another. I just wish there was more to do on the overworld I guess.
Only Zelda game I like.
Can /vr/ recommend me a good composite switcher? Perferably one with the capacity for 4 or 5 cables?
This piece of shit is OK. It also does s-video in case you want to upgrade.
Just search "pelican switch box" on ebay

This is the one I have, it's great and allows me to have all my consoles hooked up at once

Opinions on Deus Ex? Would you have liked a "side with UNATCO" route?

UNATCO?

One of the best game I've ever played in my entire life.
I would have but only if it at the same level of quality of what we got. Something I doubt would have been possible.
Design documents for DX were released today, check it out, /vr/.
