Try learning English first.

Then he shouldn't be on an English language board!
To all experienced travelers of /trv/:
What were some things or dilemmas you ran into or were unprepared for that you didn't expect before traveling in another country for the first time?
getting dumped by the girl you moved there for a week after getting in country was kinda a curveball

Crossing the border from Lao into Cambodia, I didn't realize that there were no places to get USD within 30 km of the border when you need to pay for your visa in USD, and also to be able to bribe the Laotian border guards who are working with the bus drivers in order to shake down as much money as possible from you under the threat of taking you to commie jails.
Me and three mates are going to Volgograd (aka Stalingrad) on a four day trip late September. Anyone who can give any recommendations of out-of-the-ordinary sights and things to do? Also looking for a guide/driver with car or van for a day or two.

>Literally why?
It's an absolute shithole OP, I wouldn't even know what to recommend. It reminded me of Sofia and that is not a good thing. You're better of in St Petersburg or Moscow.

Hey!
I am going to Montreal for business in early October. I'm going to be stopping in Toronto for a few days first and was thinking about going to Niagra Falls from there. Is it feasible for a daytrip? Is it decent to travel to? Is the weather reasonable at that time of year?
I am trying to look at places to stay for 3 people which is proving to be fairly difficult too...
Thanks for any help!
>>1153956
If you're going to be in Toronto you should probably do Niagara Falls. It is pretty impressive, and really downtown Toronto gets tired pretty quickly. Weather should be good, it could be pretty chilly especially at night, but since it's early October it should still be quite tolerable with a sweater.
>>1153982
Thanks!

Toronto resident here.
>Is it feasible for a daytrip?
Ya very much so. It's about 1 - 2 hour car ride from Toronto depending on traffic.
>Is it decent to travel to?
If it's your first time, yes. Personally I'm sick and tired of it because any time someone visits they want to go see the falls and it kind of loses its magic after the 20th time.
Oh but also have a look into "Niagra on the lake". It's a small "city" near the falls where there is vineyards, wine sampling etc.
Never been but people keep recommending it to me.
Is the weather reasonable at that time of year?
October is generally pretty mild. It's usually pretty rainy though but the weather has been fluctuating really wildly for the past few years.
At the moment it's warm as balls though.
Hope that helps. Ask away if you have any other questions.
I visited Vietnam this year and learned that Vietnamese are willing to pay foreigners 40k or more to get married.
Questions:
-What are your opinions/experiences regarding this?
-Where does one actually meet these people?
Post more info. Where did you hear this?
$40k to a viet is an insane amount of money.

I don't know much, this is why I'm posting here. Maybe more frequent travelers know more.
Surely it's the other way around.
Hi all I plan travelling to Eastern Europe late September and one thing thats been bothering me a bit is not meeting like minded travellers up for a good time. In my early 20s and just finished college but the vibe I get is that most of these sort of travellers tend to come to europe during the summer season.
Can anyone whose travelled Eastern Europe from late September to January tell me what hostels were like. Was there a good vibe to them or were they a complete ghost town?
>>1153843
>lookin' for a good vibe
Just stay wherever you are right now please.
>>1153874
Thanks for the amazing comment you neckbeard. Really answered my question.
>>1154100
If you're looking for parties and shit then you hit this place during summer. Off season tourists visit for the nature, monuments and cuisine not for a party vibe. Best advice I can give you is to come skiing but that's better in the west.
What south east asian country should I visit this spring. Going with girlfriend for about 10-14 days. We want nice clean water, somewhat cheap accomodation, good food and a general chilled out atmosphere. Our budget is about 200 €/day hotel included. We were thinking about vietnam but now I see alot of stuff about bad ocean/beach conditions. How about malaysia? Are there any good, somewhat unspoiled parts of thailand left. Also general SEA thread.
>>1153774
The beaches in Nam are indeed shitty. Thailand is an absolute tourist nest. Cambodia used to have some pristine beaches left (8 years ago) but I'm not entirely sure about that now.
Malaysia is for me one of the least appealing countries in SEA after Thailand, but it sounds like it might suite your preferences. Nice beaches (Penang, Perhentian, Langkawi). The food is amazing (if you go to Georgetown make sure you visit Line Clear). And travelling around is comfortable and easy.
Another option might be the Philippines or Indonesia, although in Indonesia you should stay the fuck away from Bali if you don't want to bump into nests of tourists all the time. Karimunjawa on Java is a nice replacement for that. There are also Some nice beaches close to Yogya.
Accommodation is cheap as fuck in all SEA counties.
>>1153806
I forgot to mention Myanmar, there are also some nice beaches there (and the food is good).
Hey guys.
Im going on a Norway trip with my girlfriend next month.
We will land in Oslo where we pick up a rental car and drive towards Bergen.
Do you have recomendations on what to see in the south-eastern coast or anything around there? Appreciate any tips.
Just came back from a 3 week camping trip in Norway, and I've done the same route as you, only the other way around.
I can give you a lot of tips, but it depends what you're into, how long you will stay and where you'll be staying
>>1153891
Is that youre picture or did you pull it off google images?
>>1153745
>drive towards Bergen
Oh, boy.
My Gf's mom is being a real butt about not bringing 2 bottles of steam whistle home on her flight. She says they'll explode or some shit.
Basicly, have you ever had your beer explode on a flight?
>>1153647
Never brought home beer, but I brought some apple juice and some cans of CCLemon and Magners cider, no problems. Wrapped well in dirty laundry in the center of the luggage. Anything sharpish that pokes against the can will make a hole in it more easily than when it is closer to sea-level.
And of course that ain't going in your carry-on -- and cans of beverage are heavy, watch your weight allowance.
She's retarded, the cabin is pressurized, and even if it wasn't that wouldn't happen. You can see the crew bringing bottles and cans of all drinks imagineable to serve on board. So as long as you store them like >>1153651 says, you're golden
>>1153647
>Steam Whistle
Bruh they sell Unibroue beers everywhere... If you're gonna risk it at least risk it for something worth drinking
Amerifat here. Has anyone here tried to workaway/helpx in the UK/Ireland? My plan to fly to Scotland to volunteer abroad via helpx next month (for 3 weeks) looks to be not possible without paying $$$ for a Tier 5 (temporary workers) visa and waiting up to 3 weeks. In addition, I have not confirmed where I am working yet and the visa requires contact info for that spot. Seems like my only option would be to lie to border patrol and tell them I'm only traveling as a tourist, but I'm a really bad liar and I'm sure I would be fucked. Strangely enough it seems that the UK and Spain are the only countries in the EU that require a visa. Am I allowed to work abroad anywhere else in EU without a visa? Any other Americans have experience with this?
>>1153573
say you're just visiting staying in hostels, drinking beer if immigration asks you. UK IMMIGRATION DOES NOT FUCK AROUND FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD (!!!!!) especially post Brexit Vote
Is the Tier 5 like a J-1 visa for europeans visiting america? I'm also amerifat but I loved london and want to go back, but work legally at a bar or souvinier shop for a summer. Got people I can crash with for sure. Don't wanna work for wages illegally because that's essentially asking to get fucked over.
Countries have started to turn a blind eye to wwoofers etc, even if it technically contravenes their work visa policy. My girlfriend was almost refused entry to the UK because she told them she was there to do HelpX, but she started crying so they let her in. Must be nice to have a vagina sometimes.
Honestly if your trip is only three weeks I'm sure they won't care, but you don't want to be sitting on a plane for 8 hours worrying your head off.
Lying to immigration is a terrible fucking idea in general, but it's an option PROVIDED you can satisfy them when they ask the question -- and they will -- where exactly you'll be staying for three weeks. Make up a fake itinerary and memorize it. If you have no money in the bank, borrow a grand from your parents just in case they ask for proof of sufficient funds.
>>1153622
Unfortunately I don't have a vagina. Last time I lied to immigration it didn't go well. Seems a bit too risky. I might just backpack around Scotland. Maybe it will be a better experience than staying in one place for 3 weeks. I want to hear stories from others who have gone through this though.
Hi all. I am learning Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Mandarin, and Russian. I want to travel to a country that speaks one or more of these languages for one month. Money is not an issue. Where should I go?
federally administered tribal areas in pakistan
Libya.
send pix k?
Portugal => France => Italy => Germany
For Mandarin try chinatown in any capital of this country.
Easy to move to a country to an other in Europe, you should do that.
If not go to a big university, find erasmus student.
Ive wanted to travel to jamaica for a while but im a pale american how dangerous would it be it go there for 2-3 weeks this spring?
>>1153524
why in the gods green fuck would you want to go there? Some white guilt hippy pothead?
Bob Marley has been there only good export.
Ever.
>>1153643
>white guilt
Nope
>hippy pothead
A little maybe. It just sparks my interest more than the rest of central america and the carribean

>Stays at hostel
>Added roomates on Facebook right before leaving
>Found out one shares common interests as me only after looking at his Facebook
We aren't exactly close but I really want to chat to him about our common interest. How to bridge the gap? It is kind of awkward to try to befriend someone AFTER saying goodbye. Should I just forget it?
Dude you are legitimately autistic if you think you should dedicate an entire thread to this.
But to answer your question no that is not awkward at all
>>1153528
Is it even possible to become friends with someone if the chances are we will never meet again irl?

You just write "hey dude, I noticed on your facebook that you're into <squid hentai>. I'm into that as well, too bad we didn't talk about it in <city>. What do you think of <specific squid hentai> ? Isn't it just wonderful?

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.
Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥
Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Me and a friend met up with an Israelite in Kawaguchiko to go bar hopping. We drove to a few bars but they were all closed (it was 10PM, y japanese people) but eventually we ended up in a building complex and found an expensive bar/restaurant. We didn't like the vibe so we decided to leave and we saw a door two doors down with no signs or anything on it. One of us opens it and it leads to a rock pathway (btw this was on the 2nd story) which leads to another, smaller door. We knock gently and open it to find the classiest goddamn bar I've ever seen, dim lights (with lights just to shine on the drinks), a bartender in uniform shaving ice, and lounge music playing. We were there for like 2 hours and didn't see anyone else besides the bartender.
Pic related, I tried to get video of the bartender masterfully mixing a drink but he was camera shy.
Thoughts on visiting Japan in 2020 during the Olympics?
Either Tokyo for the games or other places while the tourists are all centralized in Tokyo.
>>1153517
This is obvious, but just prepare for really high price hikes for EVERYTHING if you're thinking to go. Otherwise, I'm considering it as well. I could kill two birds with one stone if I go.
So I originally came here with the intent of asking how one begins to enter the world of travelling, as I figured that /trv/ would be the go to. But then, while reading through the board to make sure my question wasn't asked already, I saw the cancer that you folks seem to have. So I figured I'd try to be useful and make a thread about simple tips. Beginning traveller stuff, region specific tips, general advice even veterans might need, that sorta thing. I didn't see something like this, so why not. Hopefully my questions might be answered along the way.
(For reference, I've never left my home state of California in the US)
Thanks for coming here and insulting the vocal minority, friend, while not actually contributing anything besides "getting things started'. Good job on being an "idea man" in an activities focused board.

While the board has seen more political bullshit recently. What cancer do you speak?
