I have seen quite a bit so far. I saw Hyprov/baby wants candy (it's a musical improv show)/a simple space/Sam Simmons for previews and quite enjoyed them. I have seen a ton of other stuff so far but can't think of the names.
Check out the stages along the mile for some show ideas. You will go crazy from all the flyering though.
The free Fringe is your best bet on finding quality stuff cheap. Just take a punt on a show that sounds cool.
If you get a flyer and it sounds interesting talk to the person. Often the acts are doing the flyering for their own shows and sometimes have free tickets if you seem interested.

One recommendation is to not purchase drinks at venues. Just buy beers from the supermarket and drink in the meadows. Hell, if you pour the drink into a plastic cup no one would even notice you didn't purchase it at the venue.

There is also the half price Hut on the mound which may be worth checking out. I haven't actually been there yet though so I'm not sure what it's like.

Anyone from Philadelphia here? Just recently got an okish job and now looking for a place to move. Any areas that you guys recommend that are not too expensive and nice? My ex lived in Manayunk? PA and it was a pretty nice little hipster area and it would be a short drive to my job. idk, what you guys think. Also I'm going next week to check out Philadelphia, any place that are must see or do ? All I have on my list right now is Reading Terminal Market.

Kensington, Fairhill, Germantown, and Cecil B Moore are safe, affordable neighborhoods with a great community spirit
>>

Well like I said I know manayunk and Germantown is right next to it, and from what I've seen from it, it's a really shitty town with bunch of blacks. So I'm guess you are just trolling me.

All this neighborhoods are shit filled with blacks and spics

I was born in north Philly and live in the suburbs now, the best areas of the city are either very close to downtown (university city, old city/independence square, northern liberties, fishtown, south street) or outside the city limits like king of prussia in the Northwest, bensalem in the northeast, or chadds ford in the southwest. Because youre not looking for rent too expensive i suggest staying within the city limits and looking near northern liberties or university city. Contrary to what you might think uni city has decent rent around 700-900 if you look at the right places; its technically west philly but not the shitty part of west philly. Lots of outdoor events, friendly and chill environment. I chill with friends near 40th and walnut every week and sometimes head over on baltimore av for the bars. Do a little research to see which neighborhood youd enjoy most.

Manayunk, East Falls and Roxborough in particular are also nice neighborhoods but like you already know Germantown is nearby so dont walk too far.

Pic related is wissahickon creek park near Manayunk. Great nature

I was happy and now I am sad. I lack coping skills due to my age and/or mental immaturity. Here are some general details about my recent travel, and/or future travel plans. If they are recent experiences you can rest assured that I had a great time on vacation and sad it's over. This would also be a good time to mention that I'm not smart enough to understand that not fun things aren't as fun as fun things. Also, if it's future travel plans I am here to talk about, you can rest assured I do not have the money. My friends don't understand me because I'm always moping and telling them how limited and boring they are. My family doesn't get me because mom and dad won't give me more money to go on vacation again.

Can anyone explain to me why I'm sad, and fix it? I don't want to be like my mom and dad, grownups suck! I am the only person ever to feel this way, why doesn't anyone understand me?

I make a long post assuring you that I am pretty much the same!
I can't grasp a simple fact that all those sad emotions are caused because we are not travelling, we are merely running from ourselves, because we lack life goals and targets.
No, surely I won't call it escapism. It's much better to come up with something else and blame my home country or my family. Hey, I am pretty sure you have the same situation!

I am actually writing this post not for you, but for myself, as I now fell much smarter - I figured it out! And now, next time I fuck up in my life, I will just point to this thread and say:
"See? Everyone is like that. It's just dumb luck that some shitters are happy and successful"
>>
>>1149554
Sounds like you were spoiled too much and probably had a particularly easy-mode life.

I will now explain that the answer to all your problems involves moving to Japan. I will also add that the answer to any questions seeking "the best" _______ are found in Japan.

I've never been anywhere other than my home country and Japan.

I'm have two weeks in September and I always wanted to see Ziggurats. So, Mexico.
I like to visit lots of ruins preferably around some jungles. But obviously I can't skip Mexico City.
I also didn't get to have any nice beach holiday this whole summer and would love to get that as well.
I also wanna try the food, should be palatable for me. And I wanna have a safe but fun nightlife.
I have two problems.
I have zero Spanish. Can I survive? So far I managed great on my own in Europe, Moscow, Thailand, Korea..
Second problem, I'm from Turkey so there is no direct flight for whatever reason. Main options are AirFrance via Paris. Or some combination of Miami + Cancun or Mexico City.
I checked some package tours, and most of them combine Havana in.
I'm open to any and all suggestions, so thanks in advance

Mexico City has plenty of cool ruins around like pic related.

You can also take a flight from there to Cancún, enjoy the nightlife there and check Mayan ruins in the jungle (Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Cobá, etc)

Do you think language is a problem?
Also of concern, I see mexico is a huge country and like Turkey, many places are scattered around. Is it safe -easy to travel from one place to other? Should I plan a route to see a few places ahead? or just take 2 or 3 places as main base and take day tours from there?

How do you guys afford traveling and how do you do it alone?

I want to travel but I'm stingy and save my money. I also have no friends. Please tell me about your own living/job situation and how you like to travel? Stories and whatnot would be great. I'm a 25 year old business student, an introvert and I love culture and sights.

Some people are just slower at getting to know and trust others. If it does not come naturally to you, then it is just exhausting. I suppose you are in the younger side and possibly introverted as well.

Just try to say hi and strike some conversation. If it does now flow and does not happen, try again next time
>>
You need to travel for longer with someone. If you visit 3, 4 cities with a person you're gonna have an easier time hitting them up down the road than if you had just hung out a few times in one particular city
>>
Usually when you travel alone you're usually more eager to meet new people and socialize
Not saying you can't make friends when travelling with friends (especially long-time friends), but you'd be sending time with them and will less likely walk up to someone and get to know them

Just my take on it, can't verify if it's true though because I tend to socialize at ease

Bigger, more important airports seem to be cheaper than other airports. For me, I've noticed that Toronto Airport will have significantly cheaper flights (by hundreds of dollars) than the airport closer to me.

Hey /trv/ picture-takers!

My camera is ded, need to grab a new one. Do not want to "just use my phone," want a real camera that does camera shit. Like a fair amount of zoom and some fune features to play with, like long exposures or time-lapse video ro whatever.

What do you guys use that I ought to look at?

Depends on your budget and how big of a camera you are willing to lug around.

This ishould be asked on /p/. Find a gear thread and state your requirements.
>>
>>1149004
Thanks. I'd still be interested in what /trv/ uses -- I can figure tech specs and all, but would like experiences with cameras in the travel field.

Weight is not a huge issue, 'm not into lugging extra lenses and the like. Don't need a "rugged" water proof, I have the Lumix waterproof for those situations.

There have been enough good pics posted here that there must be some folks who like their camera.
>>
>>1148961
get a used one - from a family member or a friend
just about any SLR will do
- the older and rougher it looks the better
idea being that no one will want to steal it (or will be less likely to)
there is no worse feeling as a traveller (for me anyway) than in having the locals gawk at your $1,000 SLR camera
even more noticeable in a 3rd world country
its like having a giant poster wrapped around your neck that says 'hey, I got more money than you, this thing around me neck can feed your family for two years and buy you a car too'
- personally, I travel with an old Olympus SLR I have had for years, the labels have fallen off, the view screen finder is roughed up and the shine on the thing has dulled considerably
- if you think a big expensive camera will give you great pictures, that is your choice - i've taken great images with my old Olympus
- it's like penis size, its not how big you are, its what you do with your equipment that makes the difference ;)

what's there to do in Brussels (or other places close-by in Belgium)? I'm mainly into art - actual art, like the paintings and sculptures from pre-1850. Really I'm open to any Museums or interesting sights though.

The museums at are good. The Hortamuseum. Bozar has different things all the time, but mostly more modern. Museum van Elsene has older works in their permanent collection.

The costume and lace museum (quite small but nice) and especially the musical instruments museum are cool.

For galleries that show/sell classical art you should go to the Zavel square. And when you're there you should def check out the church there. It's surprisingly nice on the inside. Impressive stained glass.

I've chosen to learn esperanto as both an ice breaker and as an easy 2nd language while traveling. Has anyone had any success actually using the language while traveling? or should i just give up on the idea?
I've heard rumours of an esperanto exclusive couchsurfing program too.

esperanto is for annoying people who think they are special snowflakes for learning a practical joke language "for effect"

in terms of credibility they are several notches below people who go out of their way to learn klingon and the hobbit language

if you consider yourself a kindred spirit to those sorts of people, go for it

I figured more of a stepping stone language. Somewhere to start and see quick progress and use it to teach myself how to learn a language before tackling anything more challenging.

I am going to be traveling to alaska at the end of this month to see what it's like and to see if I would like to live there some day.

I come from California and I'm a back end developer.

What am I in for? I would like to live up there to be honest because I long for the charm of living in a small town and living in a house surrounded by vast acres of green or snow.

Hello /trv/, european guy here.
I will be in USA for work in september and taking the opportunity, I will also travel solo around some cities (probably LA, San Francisco, NYC).
When visiting European cities I'm used to book hostels with dorm rooms and common spaces, is this a thing in the USA?
Are they total shitholes for crackheads or a good way for not-so-demanding travelers sleeping cheap?

Hostels aren't really much of a thing here as they are in Europe however in the big cities you will find some. It should be noted however they are much more expensive than their euro counterparts. Accommodation in the U.S. is far more expensive than most of Europe barring maybe England or parts of Scandinavia.

If you live close enough that you can travel to a passport center in person, you can get one in 24 hrs for an extra fee. I did this a couple of years ago when I was trying to apply for a Chinese visa for work and realized I had less than 6 mo left on my passport. You can also expedite a passport renewal through the mail but it's predictably slower (three-day turnaround, I think?) and not guaranteed.
