I am going to move to China and stay there for just one or two semesters. How long it depends on me and I haven't decided yet. Looking for some tips on what I should be aware of being rather poor. I have to take care of the food mostly though. The scholarship includes tuition, accommodation and books. The place of destination is Beijing. Any experience with the Chinese, anons?

And one extra question: is it possible to go to Tibet having a student visa? Would it be very expensive?

>>
There's not much you have to worry about since living in China is pretty cheap. You don't need alot of money to have a good time either. If you wanna go to Tibet, you're gonna need additional documentation since you're a foreigner. I'd recommend just taking the plane to Tibet, but if ur really on a budget, try taking the train for part of the journey.
>>
>>1151311
>Food
For take-away, there are plenty of cheap options although as with anywhere cheap food is usually full of oil, salt and not too much nutrition. To cook yourself, Beijing has plenty of expats so getting western-style groceries shouldn't be too hard, obviously it will cost more relative to shopping China-style but that does require a slightly greater knowledge of language, culture and food safety concerns.

>Poor
China isn't that expensive but it isn't dirt cheap either, at least not in Beijing. If your only main expense is food you shouldn't have to worry too much about money. Nightlife and eating out can be anywhere from moderately to extremely expensive depending on where you go and what you want to do.

>tibet
As said you need additional paperwork to enter the TAR, which may require you to be part of a group - check details. If this doesn't fit with you you can visit the western part of provinces such as Sichuan which have areas that are significantly tibetan so you can still experience that culture without having to go through the hassle of getting a permit for the TAR.

>The Chinese
The stereotype is that they are rude and inconsiderate and that does kinda applyi n crowd situations, you will find after living there for a while and being surrounded by so many strangers all the time does kinda change your outlook a bit. However on an individual level Chinese people are generally pretty chill, despite the image of government control things are actually pretty loose, authorities don't care too much what you do as a foreigner as long as you aren't stirring up trouble with the locals. I suggest you make an effort to make some Chinese friends, it will open doors that will be closed if you just stay in your international student/expat bubble (which you can kinda do in Beijing if you want). Locals in Beijing generally won't be too curious about foreigners but if you travel outside there be prepared for lots of attention.
>>
>>1151327
>eating out
I should say eating out at legit restaurants, not hole-in-the-wall joints. But if you know where to go you can get a good meal and drinks for reasonable price.

Def: to leave my residence to a destination of greatest than 90 miles, basically beyond what 8t would be feasible to go to and have ample leisure time at during the work week.

Goal: New and different experiences for me. Even when it comes to food my wode always jokes that my favorite flavor is "new".
>>
>>1151286
For me it means going to parties, picking up girls, and going on adventures while under the influence of substances. A successful trip is measured by the number of girls I slept with

Anyone ever visited Mongolia?
Did you like it? What's there?
The good, bad etc.?

Yes, it was pretty much what you would expect. Beautiful rugged nature. You need to get a tour guide/driver if you want to see anything outside of Ulaanbaatar. There is no tourist infrastructure in Mongolia, you can't just hop on a bus and go to the next town and stay in a hostel - those simply do not exist.

questions for anyone who has lived/ lives in/ or has stayed in South Korea for an extended period of time-- (and possibly Japan)

is it really a horrible culture with shitty people? or is that just chinese and japanese propaganda. I hear they are cold and culturally stupid, sheep, they have no history or beautiful traditional culture anymore as much as China and Japan has, and considering the fact that their only reputation in my country is only k-pop and plastic surgery, it doesn't really help their case

I was in the South of Japan for a very short time, but it was nice. warm and friendly people. I think maybe they are just being racist but I'm not sure. but if I were to move to Pusan in the zouth. how would it really be?

thank you

I lived in Japan and never heard such BS about south Korea.
I only went to Seoul for half a month but honestly I liked it in spite of the deadly cold weather (mid march but still incredibly freezing).
>>
>>1151229
>no history or beautiful traditional culture anymore as much as China

Wew lad, China's "beautiful traditional culture" was strangled to death during the Cultural Revolution, all that remains is the continuation of peasant culture and psuedo-Western rabid consumerism and keeping up with the Joneses.

Not sure if this is the right board for this but what the heck.

I'm an 18 year old brazilian and I'll be visiting Europe next january. The thing is I really look like a kebab and I'm not sure if I'll be treated differently because of my appearance. Should I bring my kippa so that the locals wont consider me a threat or am I better off going normally?

Pretty sure a huehue got executed by a British cop on the London Underground a few years back on suspicion of being a terrorist (he was reaching for his oyster card which resembled a detonator).

You sure this is a good idea?
>>
>>1151195
I've already bought the tickets and booked the hotels, so there's no chance of me not going. I also guess there are less muslims in the places I'm going (Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna) than in London, so that's a plus.
>>
Ugh, there's millions of tourists in Europe every single day. You'll be just fine. Western Europe is a giant theme park anyway.

Dress nicely and don't do shady shit and nobody will even notice you.

What's a kippa? Being a jew is a no-no everywhere.

Any life advice /trv/? I'm learning spanish at the moment as a way to use my free time productively. I really just wanna fucking leave again and explore america, but i'm broke. Gonna try to pickup another job to get more hours/leave my current one/save up both. I want to make passive income so I can travel indefinitely, but I have no idea how i'd do it. Thinking about army reserves so I can make a couple bucks and fuckoff for the rest of the month. I can go back to school to get my bachelors in january (2yrs left) but idk man i just feel so unfit for actual 9-5 bullshit society. I wanna open a hostel or something but the area i'm in is too expensive. Maybe do outdoor volunteer work. Any ideas?

Start to work in a hostel
>>
>>1151183
i need $$$, which is a problem because all the hostels in my 'murican city just want someone to do reception in exchange for a free bed. Can't work in EU hostels because i'm not a citizen. Tried while over there multiple times.

Also met a fellow 'murican who worked illegally in the EU at a hostel, had to jump town because the owner accused her of stealing and was threatening em.
>>
Best advice I can offer having never done this, but it's what I would do.

Live as minimally as possible. Work as much as you can. Save every dime. Once you're at 10k, 20k, 30k.... 10k is a year easy if you pick the right Continent. Learn Spanish so you can pick up work at hostels/ bars during your travels.

Where should I stay in Nashville to be close to the good stuff? I'm heading out there for a full week with my old college roommate, and in the last three days we're staying in a shared house for a friend's bachelor party weekend.

We're going to rent a car but would like to be close enough to great places to party without having to spend a lot on cabs and such.

What areas should I look at? I want somewhere decent but don't want to spend more than $200 a night if possible. Also, can't miss things to eat/see?

Broadway isn't my thing, it's where everyone from the south goes to smoke cigs and wear cowboy boots. I've heard there are good bars off broadway nearby Vandy though.

There is a kickass music scene off broadway though. You typically have to know people. I saw a great indie folk show in a guy's stuffed living room in Nashville. Must have had 60ish people in there.

Dear /trv/bros.

In two weeks i'm going to Budapest to study abroad for 5 months with a homie of mine so i've been trying to do some research about the culture, youth and life and so on. However spending alot of time on google only give me lame tourist answers so i though i might ask you experienced guys for some tips and perhaps others would benefit as well.

I'm mostly interested in having a fucking great time. Personally i'm a big fan of Berlin. The raw culture. The youth. The electronic music. Life and raves. Has Budapest anything like it? Where's the places to be? Where is it happening? I've heard some people calling it the next Berlin but also the Eastern European Paris.

Anyways before receiving answers i've got the following knowledge:
>fun things happen at the Pest side
>there is no weed but cheap beer
>don't let prostitutes take you into expensive bars/strip clubs
>try the baths

tl;rd: Underground culture and life in Budapest.

check out the SParties held in either Lukács or Széchenyi Baths each weekend

for nightlife look for the famous ruin pubs of the general downtown area and more precisely the Jewish District (Király-Wesselényi-Dohány streets)

cool clubs, concert venues and bars include (from hipster to more pleb): Toldi Klub, LARM, Anker't, Tesla, BRKLYN, 4Bro Downtown, Ellátó, Dürer Kert, A38, Akvárium, Kraft, Fogasház, Instant, Szimpla

nice places to drink at before going to a party: the Citadel, Buda Castle, Erzsébet tér, the cables of the Liberty Bridge, Margaret Island, on the terraces of the Bálna, or if you don't mind venturing a bit further out of the center, then the Roman amphitheatre in Nagyszombati street (bus line number 9 takes you there from the downtown in around ten-fifteen minutes)

this should cover the first few weeks, by you're through with these places you most likely will be familiar enough with the city to make your own choices

if you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask them

also, which uni are you going to and what will you be studying?

Not OP, but I also heading to Budapest from 3rd September for three nights. Staying in Budapest 1054 - close to the parliament building.

What activities/things to do would you recommend? Also any highly recommended bars specific to near Budapest 1054?

Anything to avoid as well?
>>
>>1152176
in your immediate neighborhood (Hold utca) there's the Downtown Market, a turn-of-the-century market hall transformed into a gastro mall, dotted with great eateries

another nearby street, the Október 6. utca has some neat street food joints as well, and at the end of that street, you'll find Erzsébet tér, the downtown's main drinking spot, where each night locals and foreigners mingle while drinking wine and having fun

everything important will be in walking distance to you, so the things I've mentioned in my previous post still apply here - also, since you'll be that close to the Parliament, make sure to do a tour of the building

I'd say look up welovebudapest.com or grab a copy of Funzine (a monthly published free program magazine found in bars, clubs, cinemas, restaurants, hotels etc.) if you want to know what's happening right now in the city and what places you should check out

as for things to avoid... generally, the restaurants between Vörösmarty tér and Fővám tér - they're all overpriced tourist traps. District 8 is the shadiest neighbourhood of Budapest (due to its high density of gypsies and more recent immigrants like blacks and arabs), but if you stay within the area encircled by the Nagykörút (or Grand Boulevard) and the 4-6 tramlines, you'll be good - Budapest is a much safer city than most European capitals, the only thing you have to fear is unlicensed taxi drivers trying to rip you off thinking you're a dumb rich western tourist

if you have questions regarding museums, parks, viewpoints and other stuff, I'll gladly answer them in another post

Hey /trv/, in two months I'll arrive in Kuala Lumpur and I have two questions about my travel plans.

1. I'll have 23 days in total to spend in Malaysia. At the moment I think about dispensing the days like this:
>2 days Kuala Lumpr
>3 days Langkawi
>2 days Malaysian peninsula
>3 days Penang
>2 days KL / Malaysian peninsula
>7 days Borneo
>3 days Pulau Sipadan
>1 day KL

I'm interested in forest treks and diving. Would you have anything to add to my list or is it already too stressful for such a short time?

2. How's the situation in Eastern Borneo? Sabah seems to be fairly quiet right now, but officially it's not recommended to go there by my country's ministry of foreign affair. Which preparations should be done if I want to go there?

tl;dr: Is Borneo safe?

Feel free to contribute your own questions or to answer one of mine.

I'm pretty sure a bunch of Flips are kidnapping/raising trouble in the nearby islands and waters, but if you stay on the mainland there should be zero worries.

Most jobs this will come with seniority, so it's hard to say. Most of the time it boils down to joining a MNC and transferring offices after a few years. This is as close to travelling worldwide as you'll get as a young worker.

You could do consulting, which you get to frequently travel for right out of the gate, but you can count on that travel being within your home office's continent.

Something in ops/logs might give you the opportunity to travel as well, but once again you will likely need to put in some years first.
>>
>>1150865
On top of this, traveling for work can be really shitty
my dad is a global vp of a company and he travels every week (even if it's same day flights)
He's been traveling for work for 20+ years now and I think it was only a few years ago that he finally crossed off almost everything off his list (still hasn't been able to actually explore Australia (he's been to it hough) or see the Great Pyramids)
On top of that while being young is the perfect time to travel, realize that if you take a job like that you're going to be traveling for awhile down the road, so starting up a family or getting a GF even becomes very hard to do because you are always in different places
>>
>>1150949
Amen brother - the realities of international work travel are hard to understand from outside.
In reality, jet lag is a killer, from the inside one office looks much like the next, the only difference being the canteen food and one multinational hotel room / bed is much the same as the next and the perks of a platinum flyer card wear thin.

Not sure about Phuket, but in Bangkok they are everywhere. Most of them try to run some sort of scam though, so watch out and ask around before you go.

If you like nature and outdoor stuff, Khao Sok National Park is easily reachable from Phuket! So is Krabi, if you want to try some rock climbing.
