anyone ever done a working visa in New Zealand? I'm a 20 year old american with about 4k saved up. Will save up even more through the next few months, almost done with my CC degree. I'm considering doing a working holiday visa in New Zealand next year until I feel like going back (before it expires of course).
>>1156188
op here, seems like I wrote a lot more but it didn't post, oh well.
are restaurant jobs a possibility? Do people hire people on temporary visas, most of my work is food related and I love working in food. But, I will go wherever the work is, so something like picking fruit isn't out of the question.
Also what websites are good for looking at buying a car? Just trying to brainstorm for this kind of stuff at the moment.
>>1156192
>are restaurant jobs a possibility?
Yes, definitely.
Check out http://www.backpackerboard.co.nz/ and gumtree
You might also want to consider working in Australia over New Zealand.
>>1156215
Not OP, but why would Australia be preferable to NZ?
Any anons been to Gambia?
Would you recommend it for solotravel? What is there to do?
Is it safe and should I hire a car?
I want to go because flights are extremely cheap (280€ return)

About as safe as any other African shithole where everybody blames evil whitey for their problems.
>>1156277
it's not as extremist though
hi /trv/
So I'm going to Sao Paulo in December to visit family.
Any one of you who have been there? What are things to do there for tourists? Is it really that dangerous to go to the city center? Is there even anything to do there for a tourist?
>>1156058
Anyone who have been there on vacation?
>>1156127
We are a slow board, don't panic. Check back every day or so.
I've never been to Sao Paulo but I was really interested in moving there for a while so I've done a bit of research. Obviously anyone who has actually been there can overrule me but from what I've gathered ...
>What are things to do there for tourists?
There are lots of old historical sites and the city is very lively. People go out a lot and it's actually a fucking huge city. There should be no shortage of things for you to do if you are adventurous, and if you're more cautious there are some touristy things to do too, like go to old churches and stuff. There is a lots of good food and night life.
>Is it really that dangerous to go to the city center?
Not from what I've gathered. It gets a little rough at night when people go out to party, but it's nothing that can't be avoided by not getting drunk and keeping your wits about you. It seems more dangerous than New York but safer than Rio.
Downsides are that there isn't much public transport and the traffic is horrible. But it's the capital of an emerging market economy, there's tons of nouveau riche looking to exercise their sense of luxury and lots of young cosmopolitans looking to be artists and creative types. It's a world class city as far as I can tell, just one that is still Brazilian, which means it comes with all the good and bad baggage of the country.
Brazilians are also famously libertine.
If you renounce your citizenship and become stateless, where will you be deported to?
>>1156026
You actually have to present yourself at an embassy or similar to renounce citizenship. Most developed nations require you to already have another citizenship before doing so.
It's not some way to a free plane ticket and being a "free man on the land" or whatever bollocks, it's literally shooting yourself in the foot and making your life a bureaucratic nightmare.
Literally impossible.
There are agreements in place to make sure that nobody can be stateless.
>>1156040
Wikipedia says that the US is one of a few nations that will allow you to renounce citizenship without holding another.
Has anyone here been to Egypt since Arab Spring/2011?
I've always wanted to go to see the historical sites and am only now in a position where I can afford it, but I'm a bit wary that the place has become more conservative since the conflict. I'd love to take my girlfriend to Cairo, but apparently the level of sexual harassment has gone up, and she does not take that shit lightly at all.
So, if anyone's been to Cairo recently, especially women, can you tell me a bit about your experience?
Also, how about a general discussion on re-visiting places after a big political upheaval? Have you ever been somewhere where tourism was affected by a new tension in the country?
>>1155993
White European guy here,
I went to Egypt last April and it was fine. A lot of the major tourist sites like the Pyramids (which are in Cairo) and Abu Simbel were very quiet with no tourist crowds, which was nice as I imagine they were horribly crowded before the revolution.
Walking around Cairo was also fine, and I didn't notice any of the girls who were with me getting harassed and they certainly didn't mention anything. We even went to the Al Azhar mosque at Friday prayer time and it was fine, we just had to stand in the main courtyard and the girls had to go into a side room, but every mosque seems to be like that.
Overall, if anything now is probably a good time to go to Egypt as it's much less touristy than it used to be. I never felt unsafe, although I did feel a bit sorry for the people in the markets who used to make their living from all the tourists. Apparently the Egyptian economy's taken a massive hit from the lack of tourists these days. Also bear in mind that France has had more major terrorist attacks than Egypt this year.
>>1156007
OP here.
That's good to hear. I've been visiting my home country of Ireland with my girlfriend recently (she's Argentinian) and the level of tourist crowding has really been taking away from things like the Cliffs of Moher and Newgrange.
Funny you should mention France, because I was just in Paris a few months ago, having visited it 3 years earlier, and the atmosphere there is definitely a lot more tense. Getting into the Louvre or leaving the airport and seeing armed soldiers patrolling everywhere definitely added a sense of tension that was a dampener. It's a little different though, considering that it was an aberrant terrorist attack and not so much a shift in the entire city's culture itself.
But whatever, I'm getting a bit over-dramatic here. Hopefully I can get to Cairo early next year with little worry. How was it price-wise? Hate to sound like a scab, but things must be much cheaper with tourism taking a dive.
>>1156021
Yeah, well there were plenty of armed policemen in Egypt when I was there too, but I think that's pretty normal for Egypt. At a cafe in Abu Simbel I literally saw a pile of guns next to some policemen, which was a bit scary
Price wise Egypt/Cairo is crazy cheap. I got a 3 course meal on my first night for the equivalent of like €2, and you can get a felafel wrap for like €0.20. Beer's cheap too, for a Muslim country
Anyone in Bali from 2-10 September?
> pic unrelated
self bump
no one at all?
>>1156203
Yup
Why?
>>1156833
Meet up? Maybe hit up some local spots for photos etc?
Sydney airport now, I'll be in Bali in like 5 hours. Got kik/SC or something? - crazykiwicake - add me just in case I forget this thread again .-. I'm staying in some Mantra resort
*over the past few years / inflation aside.
and would you stay there again?
one that comes to mind is Arizona Charle's in Las Vegas. I think it was like $35 plus tax when I stayed. I'd stay there again. It's away from the tourists, which means its away from the touristy (good) areas. but it was worth it.

I saw a motel for $27 per night near Housting Hobby airport, but I was staying next door. I would not stay at a (US) hotel that charged that little. That made me itchy just thinking about it.
I think the cheapest in the US I've paid was something like $40.
I stayed at a love hotel in Korea a couple times, that was about $30.
Can /trv/ rank the touts of these countries from bearable to worst? Not interested in Brunei and East Timor though.
If you can, do compare with other tout heavy countries like India, Egypt, Morocco, Cuba...
Thank you.

I am spending a couple of nights in Vienna in 10 days time. There is three of us going, and we are staying quite centrally, within 1010 Vienna and a couple of minutes walk from St. Rupert's Church and Katholische Kirche Maria am Gestade.
Any recommendations of the essentials to do in Vienna? Ideally stuff which is fairly relaxing as the Vienna leg is just after a few days in Budapest, so likely to be tired and hungover. Also, what's the nightlife like in Vienna and any recommendations for cool, relaxed bars/pubs?
Furthermore, how expensive is Vienna for eating and drinking?
>>1155633
Depends what your preferences are, what music do you listen, what do you like to eat, are you gay...
Essentials, just open a tourist guide.
Nightlife: Grelle Forelle, Flex, Fluc, Pratersauna, sometimes Celeste, for clubbing.
There is a shit a ton of pubs and all are same, a cellar with crapy light, beer and burgers: 1516, Flanagans are in the 1010 to name a few.
Good bars are arround Mariahilfstrasse, Neubaugasse, Le Troquet, Europa (I hang out there, full even over the week till late in the morning) and in the Stadtbahnbögen, Chelsea, Rhiz, B92 etc.
>>1155633
also as I see you are staying near the "bermuda triangle" you'll find a lot of shit there as well, filled with tourists mostly brits.
>>1155656
>>1155657
Thanks for getting back. Into 'guitar' music, so alternative rock (not metal or anything like that). So any good indie/rock pubs/clubs would be great.
Also, not gay, but enjoy going gay bars so they aren't ruled out in any way.
As we are only there for a couple of days we would like to cram some tourist based stuff in, but also go nice places and relax. Weather is so far forecast to be nice and warm, so any outdoor activities or places with particularly nice beer gardens/outdoor drinking
Does anyone here have experience with camping in arid conditions, specifically the Arabian Peninsula?
I'll be 4wding and camping there for a week and would appreciate any advice regarding things to prepare for, gear to get, etc...
I don't know about the Arabian peninsula but I've done plenty of desert camping.
The biggest pain in the ass is that your tent will become uninhabitable within an hour or two after sunrise unless it's 100% shaded. If you get a canvas tent this gets a little better, but those are significantly heacier and bulkier.
The other thing to keep in mind is the massive temperature swing. At night you'll probably need a cold weather sleeping bag, whereas during the day you're going to be miserable from the heat. Pack accordingly.
>>1155632
>your tent will become uninhabitable within an hour or two after sunrise
Well thankfully? we should be out and about all day with a new campsite every night.
>the massive temperature swing
This is one thing I am interested in, is it actually a bad thing to get a high R-value mattress because it will stop he days heat from radiating out of the ground at night?

Watch out for Camel Spiders
Hello. I was born in West Siberia in a small town. Lately, I live in Moskow and I entered in university wich called HSE. You can ask about life, Russia, mentality and etc.
How was life in deep Siberia? How did it differ from your life now?
Did something sketchy happen while you were living there?
>>1155597
Deep Siberia has a slow-old style of life. There people's ambitions are low. Here, in Moskow, I need to move more and do different thing everyday that I didn't before. Metro, trains, bus are used everyday, shops. So many people are around me so I confused and I feel me slowpoke.
Do you have access to the internet in your hometown?
How'd you find out about 4chan
I've begun planning for a 2 week backpacking trip around Greece after Christmas 2016, and I'm trying to see as much ancient history as I can. I've never been to Greece before but my general plan is to start in Athens and travel down into the Peloponnese possibly ending in Crete.
I'd appreciate any help or advice you guys have on anything to see or do, or any advice on the best way to travel around.
Bump and Since this is a Greece related thread, does anyone have experience on Rhodes island?
>>1155389
Hello, I have done a similar trip recently, I guess I could help you.
For Athens you should pretty much stick around the historical downtown (Acropolis etc). Apart from the actual Parthenon must sees are the Acropolis museum and the National Archaeological (which although a bit further from the center is much more interesting imho). The city is not very attractive apart from the old center, but it has a nice nightlife I find.
Peloponnese has some nice coastal towns with old castles (and nice beaches all round). The most interesting historical sites are Olympia and Mycenae.
Crete is serviceable by boat from Athens. It takes a whole night to get there. The coastline around Iraklion is full of hotels and tourist facilties so you have to go a bit further to find a nice spot but they are very worth it. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of places I missed myself but maybe you can find more online.
>>1155389
>>1155963
So if you are backpacking I imagine you won't be driving your own car, which is good, since it can be dangerous outside the main highways.
To move around use the bus: http://www.greeka.com/greece-travel/buses/
Don't bother with trains outside the metro in Athens (surprisingly clean btw), they suck.
It would greatly help if you can find info and organise your trips beforehand to use public transportation (Athens mostly) since it saves a lot of money compared to taxis.
Safety can be dodgy at times but I don't think you're gonna be in physical danger ever, just keep your mind in some very crowded areas for pickpockets or con men. (never had anything happen to me btw)
If you go around Christmas prices will be much lower than summer, but also expect a lot of the tourist-oriented infrastructure to be out of commission for the season.
What about immigration thread? I want to go to USA. Live and working there, states California or Massachusetts. I am a programmer, 23 years.
USA guys, before I get citizenship I can work non officially by profession?
>>1155379
Get a job from a company that will sponsor you with an H1 visa.
Or marry an American and file green card paperwork to get a work permit.
>>1155379
I'm thinking the same, also a programmer here. Where are you living currently?
Anyone been to Playa del Carmen before who can give me some advice? I have never been to Mexico before and I plan on going at the end of September. Should I stay at an all inclusive or a regular hotel? I have heard Mexican resorts will extort money from you and have you arrested.
>>1155361
All inclusive.
Check out the forum at playa.info for some great Ideas in PDC.
There is a lot of bad press about Mexico but most of it is just lies and exaggerations
If you stay at a reputable resort you will have no problem at all. My family and I have stayed at Barcelo Playa deal Carmen for the past couple of years. Great beach, great staff, and lots of things to do. In cases like this it's worth it to spend the extra 100 a night.
What are some ways to get cheaper international airfare? Online travel bookers like travelocity, expedia, etc all seem to want $1k+ for a single ticket.
>>1155054
Find a cheap ticket to a coastal city. LA for Asia, NYC, Boston, and DC for Europe.
>>1155054
Where are you flying from and to? Maybe we can find something slightly better.
Certain routes are going to be like that though, especially in tourist season. For example I go to Europe every few years to visit family. In the summer tickets go for $1000-1200 for my flight. In October or April I can get the same flight for $700.
Use skyscanner and momondo. Also look for nearby cities to where you wonna go. For example going to Amsterdam might be cheaper than flying to Paris, from Amsterdam you can take a cheap local flight or another form of transport if you can to get to Paris.
The best way would be to figure out how to use credit card rewards to your advantage because then your tickets can become completely free.
Pic related -- 60,000 points will get me round trip to Europe via United next summer.
Like >>1155060 was saying, you can usually travel to a bigger city if you're not otherwise flying out of one to get cheaper airfare.
I took a bus from Boston to NYC ($15) earlier this year and saved hundreds of dollars by flying to my destination out of NYC rather than Boston.
