How do you become a monster hunter in a game that starts the entire party off as level 1 default scrubs? I imagine that it's pretty hard to do much research on monsters and get practical experience against them in while still trying to follow along with party and script.

And how does a monster hunter translate into settings without fantasy creatures? Just a big-game hunter?

Roleplay an enthusiastic young character, who has a genuine appreciation for the shifting life of an adventurer.
This first few times the party has a really rough battle, try to RP your char. balancing fear with excitement, and incredible adrenaline-pumping rush of after-combat.
Eventually, have him/her throw out crooked smiles and a hungry attitude when violence, or a really big foe seems to be drawing close.

And level him in a way that mechanically makes sense for someone who is fighting big monsters all the time.
>>
You've encountered packs of [CREATURE] around your [HOMETOWN] and read a ton on them. Take knowledge skills to represent this.

If the GM approves, they'll let you monster-hunt with the party, or take on jobs between sessions. That's my personal suggestion, anyway.

Roll out a mini-combat against a target. Play it like this...

> Knowledge OR Survival checks to track or deduce their location.
> Stealth OR Crafting checks to sneak up or make a trap.
> Attack, assume enemy is surprised and taking a hit from their weakness.

If the tracking fails, you don't find them. If stealth/trap fails, you don't get a free crit (and it's assumed you get injured). If the attack fails, you need to make a second attack (and receive an injury) or escape (dex save to avoid injury?)

Should only need 3-5 rolls to resolve it, and you can do it in like 30 seconds.

Considering that most African wildlife were considered monsters by Victorian Era brits, I would make the assumption that a monster is a scary animal you can hunt and then mount in your drawing room

I'm an avid MTG player from the states, and I just took a job I was offered out in England. I'd love to bring my hobby with me, but I don't know how commonly people actually play over there. I looked around in google maps and didn't find any shops that specialized in trading cards like I'm used to, just general hobby shops that might also sell them.

Is there an MTG scene in England at all?

Where you at?

If you're living in a city, you've probably got a half-an-hour drive at most to your nearest LFGS.

If you're living in a rural country area, be prepared to have to drive to the nearest city with a six digit population, which might take up to two hours depending on where you live.

Also, use this:

Cirencester, about two hours out of London apparently. I haven't been there in person yet.
>>
Europe has a huge MTG scene. Legacy Brealfast is my favorite MTG podcast, and theyre out of the UK. I dont remember where at, but they have shops close enough for weekly events, plus regular larger events within driving distance.

I found out about this game the day after the kickstarter ended
I've felt absolutely depressed for the past week, I can't get over my incredibly bad luck
How the fuck did it end the day before I found out about it, I'm way to damn poor to afford this game other than the kickstarter
The game costs $300 in my currency more normally than it does in the kickstarter
Even if I wait for black Friday sales I'll still have to spend $200-$250 more in my currency than I would have if I found out about the kickstarter one day earlier
I can't fucking stop my incredible sadness over this bad luck
I'm way to poor to pay hundreds of dollars more on a game just because I found out about it one day late

Wait until the hype dies down and people start trying to sell boxes/badly painted models online.

Also possibly wait for the next expansion (there's always a next expansion) to get a kickstarter. Can't take more than a few years.

It's a shit game, so you haven't missed anything.

I need good, simple system for game where players are officers of Merc company and command it while using the chars too. ( two phases, company and personal one)

Will you help /tg/? Or maybe you have idea on your own?

Only War has mechanics for this kind of thing, but it is a 40k setting. It might be good for inspiration.

It has mechanics for designing a regiment along with characters, and for requisitioning gear from the regiment, based on performance during missions and such.
Also, every PC also makes at least one assistant NPC, to give more of a "platoon" feel.

playing 5e?

Introduce a Coup De Grace rule: an angry vilager with a knife while you're asleep can and will drop you down to Death Saves instantly.

Also Suffocation Rules.

Death Saves are easy because players should be making a lot of them.
>>
>>51234898
Same way you keep weight and tension when players have the ability to "just make another character".

Dying will do nothing to solve whatever conflict you currently face. Sure, you'll come back in a few hours, or even days. However that won't do anything to help the poor family who're being hunted and will likely die if you're not there to save them.

There are worse things that can happen to a player than their character dying.

Generally speaking, how much should you a pay a party for any given job done? Is the payment in cash, in favors, or something else?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>51234456
Depends on the job. Depends on the party. Depends on the setting.
>>
Whatever is contextually fair.
>>
>>51234456
Here's an idea. Always present your party with a reward that is only a little bit less fair than they deserve. If they feel like they deserve more then make it a relatively easy check to convince the reward giver to give them the amount that you first would assume is fair. Also have a much larger reward prepared that's more than they deserve in case they want to try and press their luck even further and succeed/somehow outdo themselves on the job at hand.

Alternatively, give NPCs a generosity 'stat'. Some NPCs will be more stingy with their rewards, others will be much more grateful. That sorta thing.

Did some work on modeling for a homebrew Chaos Daemons unit, essentially the equivilent of Slaanesh Nurglings. Promised to show them off here when I finished, as thanks for some kind anons helping me sort out rules. I'll post them if anyone's curious, but I don't want to eat up too much space.

I think I still need to touch up the details in some areas, though overall I'm very pleased with how they turned out
