Ladder into a pit.
The ladder's bottom half is illusory and the bottom half of the real part snaps off once enough weight is put on it.
So you're left with a ladder that's a third as long as you need it to be to get out.

I was talking about the half that came down with you.
In order to get out, you need to reach the bottom of the real ladder. That means that the quarter ladder you have left is useless because it needs to reach three quarters (to the bottom of the half of the real ladder that is still on the wall).

The important part is that the real ladder only goes halfway down and the bottom half of the real ladder pulls out when enough weight gets put on it, leaving the poor chump holding it falling ~20-30 feet into a pit where the ladder piece that came with them is woefully insufficient.
