I'm dming for d&d 5e and one of my players (a monk) constantly complains about not being able to do anything because he gets shit rolls a lot of the time (even though monks get multiple attacks per turn). All the other players are cool when they miss, they're just like "ah shit, alright". What should I do to get him to stop complaining? He's mentioned he wishes he could have some form of reliable damage, so maybe something where it's just a piddly 1d6 damage or so but it always hits when he attacks?

What's the level of the party?
Monks are ok at low levels and as long as there aren't feats in game, if neither of those they are pity damage dealers and their only utility is to stun. They also have problems if their stats aren't good because, unlike everybody else, they can't wear armor/shield when their stats are low. Is not as bad as 3.PF, but monk is still not great.

Started them off with 1 feat each, he took Mobile. They just became level 3 at the end of the last session, and he has a spear but for some reason doesn't use it and elects to use unarmed instead.

I've been running a post-apocalyptic campaign in the style of Apocalypse World's implied setting, but using the Savage Worlds rules-set. The first adventure, which recently concluded after ten sessions, was the characters' venture into the nearby ruined city to get medical supplies for their village as winter approached.
they head into the city, end up attacked by bandits, then some elite bandits which are wiped out by a terrifying alien tentacle monster that the characters then have to fight. They eventually make it to the hospital with a couple of bandits prisoner, and learn that those bandits were exiled for stealing. Seeing the opportunity to solve several problems at once, the bandits open fire.

The ensuing firefight takes a couple of sessions simply from sheer scope, over two dozen bandits are killed, and they end up capturing the bandit leader, a 20-or-so-year-old woman who they fight briefly before knocking unconscious. They rescued a new PC from the bandits' prison cells, and he decides to sever her spine with a scalpel. He ends up rolling the D&D equivalent of a 35 on his Healing check, so I rule that it works. The characters get their medicine and take off.

They fight a couple more groups in the city, including the spine-severing character's old enemies, and a Jonestown-esque cult. During this time the bandit leader wakes up again, learns what has happened her, and tells the spine-severer exactly how sick in the head she thinks he is. They keep dragging her along in a wheelchair they took from the hospital. One of the other characters takes care of her, cleans up after her, et cetera. She reveals her minor psychic powers to him, and talks about how the death cult wants her for her abilities because they believe she can help them make contact with their deity.

Now despite being a bit taken aback by the character's decision to go full edgelord and cripple this woman, I did do some research. Apparently it is very difficult to do this sort of thing without some kind of an infection. So I have brought this into play, showing her in more and more pain. She is dying.
I should add that this character is not really a bad person. She is effectively a River Tam rip-off whose parents (the original leader of the hospital "bandits") were killed, leaving her to take their place. That said, she is certainly capable of being ruthless and cunning. I have been roleplaying her as scared little girl even though she certainly was not like that when commanding the bandits. I am hoping this is luring the characters into a false sense of security.


We are leaving this campaign be for a while (we played eight sessions over a year ago, then two more sessions fairly recently to wrap up the first adventure), ending with the doctor in the village telling the characters who severed the girl's spine that it would take a miracle to save her now (he seems oddly driven to save her all the sudden). That said I do have more plot points planned:

> The "deity" the cult worships does in fact exist, in a powerful alien being. It may or may not be capable of healing the bandit girl. Depends if the characters go back that way.

> The warlord that rules over the nearby refinery (where everyone gets their gas) has been overthrown. The new guy is not as benevolent as his predecessor.

> There are quite a few other factions and settlements I am hoping to introduce when we return to this game.

So… thoughts? Advice? Ideas on where to go next? I feel like the player who cut the girl's spine realized it was a messed up thing to do, he seemed a bit ashamed of it as I RPed the results more. She fell asleep crying a lot, was constantly a burden, etc.

You should go find him, save him. what scheme did you try to paint them? My first ever was an imperial fist i painted using some left over bits i bought on ebay, it was pretty bad, but at least I thinned.

Daily reminder that WoTC has no idea wtf they are doing, and Emrakul is a perfectly balanced card.

sure she's godly powerful, but she also costs 13. maybe you can get her down to like 8 or 9 if you set up your graveyard right, but still that is very significant.

only thing making her broken, and what should ACTUALLY have been banned, was Aetherworks Marvel. 4 colorless mana to cast it, and uses only energy(which is easier then ever now to get) to trigger it.

with some basic deck fixing(of which there is plenty) you can basicallty use it to just cast whatever you want, at will, for free. as early as turn 4.


THIS is the source of "turn 4 emrakul". Emrakul herself is totally incidental in the combo, and can be replaced with any other super powerful devastating creature for much the same effect.


this has been proven now, since as we see, all the turn 4 emrakul decks literally just replaced her with Ulamog, and pretty much nothing changed. in some ways it's actually STRONGER.


Tl'DR: Emrakul should not have been banned, Aetherworks Marvel should. Wizards has no idea wtf they are doing

The problem isn't dropping a fattie on turn 4, the problem is dropping a very specific fattie that alone seals the game.
Ulamog doesn't spell "game over" when it lands. If replacing Emrakul with Ulamog made the deck stronger, why the fuck would people ever use Emrakul instead of Ulamog in the first place?
Banning Emrakul was the right decision.

people hated it because it's unfar as hell for your opponent to be able to summon such a ridiculously powerful creature, of such high cost, literally for free and only a few turns into the game.


MTG's defining mechanic is cost. it's what prevents the game from becoming yugioh, with it's 1200 special summon methods that let you fill up your entire field with high class monsters like 2 turns into a game.

Ulamog absolutely assfucks you if it gets out turn 4, just like Emrakul.

as soon as it lands, you exile 2 permanents. this includes lands.


if you're turn 4, that means you may have just lost half your mana pool, in addition to now having to deal with 10/10 indestructible.


also, if he attacks 3 times, you just lose. you cannot stall him out.


unless you have the cards to deal with him RIGHT there in your hands and ready to use, you're fucked. he's going to eat your deck 20 cards at a time, and you're dead in 3 turns even if he never touches your lp.


and what are the odds of you having exactly what you need to deal with him on turn 4?

you just lost 2 mana, and it's only 4 turns into the game. how many cards are there that can kill Ulamog, that only cost 2 mana?


oh, and hopefully the cards you needed were not in your deck, because, again, he's fucking eating your deck.


Ulamog is DEVASTATING early game, and aetherworks is how he comes out, just like Emrakul.

Ive been playing for 7 years now, dming for 5 of those, and for most of them played in a public library every saturday where literally anyone could walk up and join us and not a SINGLE time have i had someone who did something like this, I swear that the people who bitch about this either only play online or dont play at all and just make shit up

Let's extrapolate on that. Game board on a cloth takes minimal space, yes. But you still need to carry the cloth. Why not put the game board on something cloth-like you would be carrying anyway. Such as - clothes.

As for the game pieces / pawns. Perhaps you could re-purpose buttons. Or detachable zippers.

Ran We Be Goblins in 5e. The goblin rogue went ahead to scout, and proceeded to silently and instantly disembowel every single horse and dog in the adventure.

...come to think of it, the dogs should get advantage on smelling. But I think even with the +5 PP the rolls were so good they would've been enough.

He probably wanted her for a tribal warrior deck instead of a tribal soldier deck, which i can understand. Personally i'm building a tribal human deck around her, though i have no idea what i am doing.

To me the term "soldier" implies a member of a standardized, trained, regimented, professional army, where "warrior" or "barbarian" imply a more informal, unrefined, tribal, individualistic sort of fighter.
