Is intentionally maiming an enemy an inherently evil act, if the alternative is just killing them outright?
39 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Depends. If you do it solely as retributive punishment, where you derive pleasure, or at least a personal feeling of vindication, from their pain, then I can't think of a case in which it isn't evil.

If you, for example, shoot someone nonlethally, even though their wounds will be severe, so that they can live to stand trial, that's lawful neutral or LG.

Alignment is mainly about motive, not outcome, so few acts are inherently aligned at all.
>>
>>51230358
There's probably not much defense for shooting someone in the dick if you're just trying to take them out of the fight for later prosecution. I mean, you could shoot them in the arm, or the knee, but the dick I can't imagine as anything other than a "I like it when they scream" action.

Hey guys, Im thinking of running an event about a month down the road at my FLGS and I wanted to know if you think it would be fun or not.

In 40k they have these hex tiles that they use to make maps which they use to run narrative campaigns. Different factions can gain and lose territory, sometimes with in game effects. For the event I plan on doing the same thing but with MtG. Each player would choose a faction and build a deck, limiting their creature types to those that appear in their faction.

For example Faction 2 right now includes Dwarves, Merfolk, and Minotaurs. So they cant use goblins, vampires or humans. However by taking tiles players can unlock creature types to include in their deck like dragon or zombies. As long as they hold the proper tile they can put that creature type into the deck.

Some of these tile acquisitions come with a choice, say like raiding a temple, that players of that faction that night can vote on. If they choose to raid the temple it would allow them to use artifacts in their decks at the next event, but all other factions would get access to ghosts to represent the angry spirits from the temple. Some events will include a universal change such as mercenary groups, meaning players can include any Warrior creatures regardless of faction.

Players can choose to spread out their tiles to gain more deck options or make a beeline straight to the center token which grants victory.

I'll post current faction selections in the following post.

I appreciate any input you have, I personally think people would enjoy it, but Im just one perspective.

Current factions are:

>Faction 1:
Humans
Orcs
Goblins

>Faction 2:
Dwarf
Merfolk
Minotaurs

>Faction 3:
Gnome
Vedalken
Giants

>Faction 4:
Vampire
Aetherborn
Ogres

>Faction 5:
Viashino
Leonin
Kobolds

For options unlocked by tiles I am currently going off tags that cover several creature types.

>Fey:
Elf
Kithkin
Satyr
Centaur

>Necromancer:
Zombie
Skeleton
Ghost
Banshee

>Articifiers:
Myr
Constructs
Artifacts
Vehicles
Golems

>Slivers:
SLIVERS

>Horror:
Horror
Eldrazi
Demon

to name a few.

>cont
>>
>>51229785

The map is currently expected to be 8 tiles deep in a straight line from the faction starting points at each corner of the map. By winning games players earn points that they can spend at the end of the event. To decide how these votes are spent each player in a faction votes for their choices.

Factions can take a maximum of 2 tiles an event, any remainder of their points can be spent recruiting creature types for the next event or getting more info about tiles on the map. With this design a faction can reach the center if they win in about 4 weeks of events if they focus.

At the end of a "season" we would announce the new factions and the new map, or possibly do a raffle to determine the new factions.

Besides faction creature limitations player decks would be non-standard, and include no artifacts unless the faction has unlocked those options.

THoughts?
>>
>>51229686
Cool idea, lot's of potential problems though.

1. Tribal disparity
Elves and Merfolk and are decks in every format (except for Standard). Dwarfs, Gnomes, Orcs, Vedalken, Giants and Leonin are decks in zero formats because they don't have enough playable cards. Merfolk will stomp everything else into the sea if the decks are tribal.

1.5 Faction Disparity
Faction #2 has the best tribe, as well as two other tribes that beat most of the rest of the factions tribes. Faction #2 is going to sweep the map. Faction #3 isn't going to survive the first turn.

2. Non-creature decks.
There are a lot of decks that aren't dependent on creatures. It doesn't matter which creatures I have access to if I'm playing burn, mill, poison-less infect, many combo decks, etc.

3. Cost
Certain tribal staples are expensive. For example: Cavern of Souls.

4. You forgot rats and elementals.

Oh, and one follow-up question: If SIsters are gated due to some kind of skill level, cost factor, or something else, then what would be a closely related Imperium army that I could start with that would be closely related to the Sisters on the Imperium hierarchy or flavor-wise.

Please don't say Space Marines.
>>
>>51229315
>Can I start with Adepta Sororitas?
You can, but I wouldn't. Besides the newly re-released Saint Celestine and a single limited-run Canonness, all their Infantry models are metal. While these metal models aren't bad sculpts per se, they're VERY dated at this point and quite expensive. A single SoB infantry squad at HALF strength will cost you TWICE AS MUCH as a squad of most other armies' infantry at FULL strength. Some models are even out of production entirely, forcing you to get lurk ebay or the like for them. And as already mentioned, for the price the models themselves do still look very old. It might be hard for someone new to the hobby to make them look good.

From a crunch perspective, SoB sit around the mid-tier in terms of balance. Not too strong, but not too weak. They can clobber Ork and non-meta Tyranid armies with ease, but will have serious problem versus top-tier armies such as Space Marines, Eldar, Tau, Necrons, etc. They have a number of problems, but a number of strengths too. Read up on their Tactica on 1d4 if you want a more detailed and biased breakdown of them from a crunch perspective.

>Do they even have a codex?
SoB have two codexes where you can find their rules actually, and BOTH are legal to run. Codex: Adepta Sororitas is digital-only and is the older of the two, and Codex: Imperial Agents is a physical release that includes SoB (among other factions such as Inquistion an Assassins).
Rules differ only slightly between the two (C:IA does NOT have rules for Celestine, but otherwise has more detachments and Formations for fielding the army).

True King V.F.D., The Beast

Wyrm / Xyz / Effect
Rank 9
3000 / 3000
2 or more Level 9 monsters
Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then declare 1 Attribute; for the rest of this turn, face-up monsters on the field become the declared Attribute, monsters in your opponent's possession with that Attribute cannot activate their effects, also they cannot attack. If you would destroy monsters with the effect of a "True Draco" or "True King" monster in your hand, you can also destroy monsters your opponent controls.

[A] nineteenth century British cult believed in [a] comet-god who sang to the stars and planets as it passed by them in its orbit. They said it destroyed those worlds it passed, by waking up demons or ancient gods ... who slept on each world.
—Kevin A. Ross, "The Music of the Spheres"

Ghroth (the Harbinger) resembles a small, rust-colored planet or moon with a single, gigantic red eye which it can close to avoid detection. Ghroth drifts throughout the universe singing its siren song, the Music of the Spheres. As it swings by a planet, any Great Old One or Outer God sleeping there is awakened by the song. This usually results in the extinction of all life on the planet or perhaps even the utter destruction of the planet itself.

Ghroth is believed to be responsible for the periodic mass extinctions that wiped out 90% of all life on earth, including the extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous era. It may also have caused the destruction of the planet Shaggai, the homeworld of the intelligent, insect-like Shan. For this reason, Ghroth is also known as Nemesis, or the Death Star, named after the Nemesis Hypothesis, first proposed by American astronomers David Raup and Jack Sepkoski.

Appears in "The Tugging" ( The Disciples of Cthulhu , DAW books, 1976)

Rhogog is a Great Old One and was born when Cthulhu's blood was spilt upon the ground during a clash between Cthulhu and his half-brother Hastur, hinted to have occurred around Great Britain or Ireland. Intending to use the blood for some unnamed purpose, several Star-Spawn put an entity into his spilt blood, an entity which would ensure that the blood would never be harmed. This entity lay dormant, gathering power, and eventually became the being called Rhogog.

Rhogog is a being of darkness, although normally is seen in the form of a great, black tree. No matter what shape he takes, he is always very hot to the touch. It is unknown if this is simply due to Cthulhu's blood within him or some other aspect of his dark nature.
