Hey /out,

Long time listener first time caller.

Currently driving solo across Canada to Vancouver. It's the first snow of the year and I'm wrapped up nicely in the sleeping bag.

Shaved naked in the woods along the north shore of Superior today. It was beautiful.

What are some cool solo trips you've done?

Why should we preserve the wilderness?

What kind of discoveries has makind made in the wild and what potential does the wilderness hold for man today?

Should we consider ourselves equal to the rest of the biodiversity that inhabits the wilderness?

Should we approach the preservation of the wilderness without putting human interest first?

What do you guys know or think about the wilderness in general and how does it interrelate with science?

Have you guys read any good scholarly articles about the wilderness?

I want to hear what /out/ has to say about the wilderness.

btw for the sake of discussion we will define the wilderness as the vast ecosystems that are generally untouched by man. (even though they are rapidly declining.)

>Why should we preserve the wilderness?
1) the majority of people enjoy it it's calming too much hassle to live in it but we like the occasional visit and future generations will too. one could argue you have a right not to go in the woods if you don't enjoy it but can't take the woods away from the future generations.
2) earth ecosystem is complex farming is necessary to provide us with the raw calories but it doesn't not provide enough biodiversity for it all to work.
3) we did learn shittons about our origins evolution and biology while studying wildlife and we arguably barely scratched the surface yet.

I was borrowing a friends alice belt, aka pistol belt, and she asked for it back.

So now I am in the market for a new one.
I cant figure out which is which. Alice, LCE, ILCE, there are a ton of names.

I need a belt, and some large, soft pouches. I use these when camping, and at festivals. I attach all my shit to them, water bottle, photo gear, knives, etc.
I keep everything else in the pouches. Lighters, ID, money, etc.

I honestly have no idea what the proper names for these items are, and in turn having a hard time finding them for sale online.

I'm looking for a belt. I found a ton of the, but if you have any input on which "brand" or type are better over the other, let me know.
Still looking for pouches. I would like something large, so not an ammo pouch, and preferably something soft. The old one I had was very stiff.

>>

Thanks the " M-16 Ammo Pouch" looks very similar what I had before. Sans the plastic lock. But searching for that yields too many variations on the item. Is there a more specific name for that type of pouch?
>>
>>872833
ALICE stands for All-Purpose Lightweight Infantry Carrying Equipment, its a modular system of gear for carrying and individuals immediate necessities.

The pouch you are looking for is known as an ALICE small arms pouch.

I like ALICE gear because I'm a fag for Nam stuff, but to be honest with you a modern Combat Belt is better in every way to ALICE.

Lets tell stories of times we caught the big one, or fucked up big time.

>Be me
>Be 14
>Im out fishing for steelhead with my dad
>Good times
>I have these nice waders my grandpa gave me
>Also have a G. Loomis rod (from before they were shit)
>Getting no bites
If you have never fished for steelhead before then you should know that the little fuckers dont like to bite.
>About 4 hours into the trip, we are out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere by the north fork lewis river.
>Im standing out on a log
>Suddenly feel a massive fucking bite.
>Thing must be at least 20 pounds
>In the middle of my battle lose my footing
>My legs spread apart and my nuts begin careening towards the log.
>As I let out the call of the eunuch my line snaps
And thats the story of how instead of catching the big one I wound up performing the nutcracker.

I think it would be an interesting experience to go /out/ for a few months and see how far you could go doing nothing but primitive tech. You go with the clothes on your back and that's it. With the intent of making your own clothes at some point.

Depends what sort of situation it is. Total war? Probably go out, most people will still be in the cities. If it's nuclear conflict there's little I can do anyway so I might as well get comfy.

Ok /out/bros, if 4chan suddenly shuts-down, where are we all gonna link-up? Is there another forum or interhangout we can all be together again, or will it all be over forever? I don't want us to get torn apart like that, and given the current situation I think we should be prepared for a potential blackout.

If you are a newfag: a school bagpack, a foam sleeping mat, a secand hand sleeping bag, a home depot tarp, sandwiches and beer is really all you need for an overnighter. No need to get high end shoes or a fancy tent. Trust me, its that easy!

In case you aren't a newfag: please post pics that would be good to illustrate gear. Nothing fancy, just pics where the item is on a light background and clearly visible.

Also, point out mistakes in wording or factual statements. We want to make this one better over time.

I'd highly recommend a decent little tent 'two person', its way better then using a shitty tarp especially in wet weather.

>>
It depends on what i'm doing. If i'm just relaxing by a lake or pond I usually like to listen to Loren Connors Airs, but if i'm hiking I like to listen to jazz (Kamasi Washington The Epic) or ambient (Andy Stott Luxury Problems). Just situational.

I swear in the last few weeks I've seen the Microphones (especially this album) posted everywhere.
No complaints here though, that's a top5 album for me.

Are teardrop trailers /out/ approved? I have access to all the tools I'd need to build one (including welders).

Should I? I also drive a fullsize truck so I might have other better options.

What do?

I like land rovers in general- but you'd never make it out here when it gets muddy.

Random internet photo but this is what my back 20 looks like when it rains.
>>
>>843230
Everytime I see things like this I chuckle.

Since mud especially pic related. Is mostly water. Idk why off road guys dont just seal up the 2/3rds of their trucks/cars like a boat. Put some decent knobbies on for pedal purposes and chooch right along mud. You can cross mud like that in a honda civic, as long as it could float like a boat. Such a simple solution nobody ever thinks of. Well. The us military did... I suppose maybe its more expensive then jacking your truck up 12 feet in the air. Idk really tho.
>>
>>843250
I'd bet that driving what he has is more fun. A utilitarian solution is not what they are going for.

Guys I live in the city with no reliable means of transportation to go someplace cool. I'm also in college so even if I were to bike somewhere far and try to stay out there for a bit I would have to come back of course.

So for now I'm just planning on going to the pic-related area, Mt. Airy Forest. It's only like 1500 acres but I want to just get out there as much as possible because I'm tired of sitting around at home.

So I went ahead to their website for a map and this was the only one they had. Apparently all the trails in red are closed? Does that mean they just don't want people on them or that they are unsafe or something?
I'll probably end up exploring them anyways after getting a feel for the area but I was wondering if anyone knew a reason for closing off essentially all the trails in the area?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>875083
Trails get closed for multiple reasons.
Sometimes trails are cycled through- once one area starts to show signs of use they're closed so they can recover and others are opened up.
Sometimes its because of a protected species breeding during that time of year. This might be something as small as a rare butterfly.
On occasion its a safety concern- sinkholes, abandoned mines with dilapidated barricades.
>>
>>875131
Makes sense, thanks m8
>>
>>875134
But you shouldn't go into closed areas.

Mt. Charleston in Nevada has a rare butterfly that may be extinct now because of a fire a couple years ago- the fire was centered in their only known habitat.
So even if it makes no sense why an area is closed, it could be for something very important. Stepping on one Mt. Charleston blue butterfly caterpillar could mean the difference between survival of the species or extinction.

Hello, /out/. I'm going to a hippy festival inspired by Burning Man tomorrow. I'm not much of a hippy at all, for the record.

Some of the core tenants of the festival are self reliance and bartering. My experience with outdoors is limited to watching Ray Mears and a camping trip once, but I've always wanted to get into bushcraft, so I figure this might be a cool opportunity to give it a try.

I'm not expecting to accomplish anything too complex, but I want to try some basic stuff, hopefully even starting a fire on my own.

Could anyone advise me on what to bring, what I should try, and maybe some useful resources or guides?

Also, since you're expected to barter, my friend advised me to make some kind of crafts that I can trade to people. Is there anything I could make while /out/?
