Dont much care of the design of shemags. Those loose frayed ends and just asking to be set on fire. I prefer hoo-rags, which are those bandannas which are attached on either end so it's like a pull over scarf.

I used a shemag when I was a conscript, handy when out in the cold like when you're static, range, guarding, etc. Don't like using them when I have a lot of kit and have to move around, tends to get in the way, but I do keep one spare in my pack.
Can be used as a makeshift tournique, or support for a broken arm, as well

No, I use a poncho. Bigger, better, more versatility. You can wear it like a normal poncho, throw one side over your shoulder to use as a cape, wrap it around your neck and have a warm scarf, lay it on the ground as a blanket, hang it from a tree and use it for shade, roll it up and use it for a pillow.

Shemaghs are trendy at the moment, but they're best suited to the environment they were originally created in.

They are excellent as a dust mask, covering up your face, and protecting you from the sun. Good protection for your neck, and back.

I recently upgraded to a wool one, and would highly recommend it.

I live in Arizona, that said whiteman has been using similar sized kerchiefs for a long time, there just not the thing people are talking about now, I personally wear a "hobo hanky" because it doesn't have the tassels or the pattern to make it look middle eastern for hot environments there great especially if you soak them in water, for the cold there better than nothing, especially if you stuff them down inside your jacket/coat, very warm as long as its dry (cotton kills and all that)

It's basically a big piece of loose weave cloth. That's a good thing for protecting the head from sun and dust in extremely hot weather. Most people don't actually need the dust protection though, and would be better served with some type of hat. As for all the other things it does, a kitchen rag does most of it better.
