How can I learn more?

When I was in the 4th grade we had an assignment to go identify something like 20 different trees using a chart to narrow it down. I did terrible on it. Hurt my self-esteem related to tree identification.

I learned identification by walking in the woods with someone who is good at ID.
He would ask me "What kind of tree is this?"
I would answer. If I was wrong, he would tell me what it was.
It worked. Took a lot of repitition for a few species, but without pointing out clear identifiers he still eventually made it to where I can see as clear as day what many native species are.

My advice is to spend time in the woods with someone who knows trees.
