Have you ever encountered a black bear in the wild? Did this bear pose a threat to humans or was the shooting totally unjustified?
47 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
I frankly don't think that bear was a threat at all. The damage to it's fore legs highly incapacitates it's swiping power and speed. Sounds like the hunters were a pair of weekend warrior assholes who 'bagged 'em a good 'un'. Anyone who is both pro hunting and has a respect for the lives taken to sustain them would have been able to distinguish a good kill versus a bad kill. Unless in their warped mind they though putting him down was an act of mercy, it was a bitch move.
>>
>>876929
They apparently bragged about it after doing the deed and had been trying to shoot this bear for like 3 years now. It was definitely premeditated and malicious in nature.
>>

It was a nuisance animal that was constantly seen damaging property in town.
It should have been relocated or destroyed years ago.

I was happy to find a board for this. So I recently purchased a little ranch house with my girlfriend, with just under 7 acres of straight up soil and dirt under it. I did this because I own chickens, needed to expand my area, and was looking for something a little closer to town. I'll closed off a ~2.2 acre area near an artificial 1,800 gallon self cleaning pond for the chickens (and the domestic geese of course), which leaves me with 4 and some change acres of land to basically do what ever with. I was thinking of growing some crops on a portion of it, and would like some ideas as to what I should grow, as well as what would be easiest to grow and take limited attention. Before I had blueberries, strawberries, and a few apple trees. This would basically be for personal consumption, friends, and treats for the poultry when I get bored. We'll be transplanting our apple trees once the weather gets colder.

Here's some pictures from some hiking I did back in Nevada.

Honestly, you can never go wrong with potatoes.
>>
>>876694
I could do potatoes, thinking of some carrots, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, the apple trees of course... I'd love to make my own chilli and stew. Strawberries have always been for jam.
>>
>>876729
chilli grows everywhere just start a tray of seedlings.

As for the rest if its longterm Ide start a whole bunch of fruit trees aswell.
Take yonks to grow so youll thank yourself in 15 years

This comes up a couple times a week.
The only thing that matters when buying land is WATER.
If you can't drill a well, you can't live there anywhere near comfortably.

Cistern, rain collection, trucking water in is not reliable.

Initial cost will be the biggest issue of course.
>well- $4,500
>septic- $2,500
>solar- $5,000
>cabin- $10,000

Thats on top of land cost of course.
Southern California- half acre for $30k
Rural Georgia- 40 acres for $30kk

Are you going to buy chicken feed? Its not cost effective.
Are you going to free range them? Then its free eggs and KFC, but you have to watch for coyotes, foxes, hawks etc.

Who here is from Texas?

Where can I go /out/? There's a lack of public land in this state. I moved to Arlington in October 2014 and it's impossible to find some good secluded areas to go /out/ that aren't private property.

Where can I go? Thinking of just moving someplace else like Montana or Michigan.

If your compass breaks while /out/ and you need to find your direction, a snare wire and small magnet can be used to create a makeshift compass. Cut a piece of snare wire about three inches in length. Stroke one end of the wire--about one inch in length--with the magnet in a straight direction to concentrate the electrons on that end and magnetize the wire. Suspend the the wire from a thin piece of cordage and out of any elements which may affect it's direction like wind. The magnetized end of the snare wire will now point you in directional north. Test the accuracy of the wire by slightly adjusting the suspension and see if the wire will point back to north.

Post your /out/ hacks.

Magnets are in a lot of electronics that you may not even know of. Pop them open and take a look.

Oh no my GPS battery died! Lets rip it apart and create a nigger rigged compass so I can find my car again 1 mile back on the trail!

Are ferro rods worth it, or should I just go with a lighter.
81 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
Ferro rods are crap they don't make as much flame
>>
>>870567
Bics are so reliable and tiny that you might as well just bring 2 and be set. If you want to play Mrs. Bushcraft, go for the ferro rod until you get the bow technique down.
>>
>>870567
I sometimes use my ferro rod for the hell of it but most of the time i just use a lighter. I would recommend always having the ferro rod on you though because lighters fail and ferro rods always work in the end

What the fuck happened to the Boy Scouts?

>Eagle when I was 16 in 2005
>Aged out at 18 in 2007
>Decide to volunteer at a Merit Badge day (basically where scouts go to earn the badges that are more classroom based, like the Citizenships, etc.)

This is the part that boggles my fucking mind.

>See kids come wearing their Class-A underneath a trenchcoat. wearing a fedora and fingerless gloves
>Watch a kid take notes on a MLP-themed Macbook
>Hear one kid tell another kid that his sash with the Rifle merit badge was "Creepy because he obviously wanted to kill people"
>Got to sit in on the new Animation merit badge, dear God.
>Weebs as far as the eye could see, it was on day 2 so they were presenting their shitty mspaint deviantart level shit to some poor man in his 40's who was probably ex-Disney.
>Also, some kid wore a fucking TAIL

After that me and one of my old friends stopped at Culver's on the way home, WTF happened?

I've never made a BoB, as I haven't got the need. I live in a tiny ass dorm room with every nook and cranny lined with outdoor gear. If I needed to get the fuck out, I could have a specified for the situation bag ready in 10 minutes.
>>
>>870411

My Bob bag is pretty much just my /out/ set up. Only difference is I throw in more mags for my hand gun and ar in there. I throw in more food, flash drive with documents, few other odds and ends.

So it's already built on a system I know that works for me. With extra stuff thrown in that only takes a min to do.

Here goes my first attempt at a General.

Some of us are poorfags, some are thrifty, some just want to see what happens when we apply our creativity to make our own gear.

http://www.owfinc.com/fabrics.html

As you can see, there are many resources out there for people who want to make their own gear. This is an attempt to condense some of that information down, and get some repositories together for MYOGers.

I am working toward making a whole set of gear, but first I have to get the fabric. I just got a sewing machine that belonged to my late grandmother.

I almost didn't start this thread, as I am unaccustomed to posting; I've been a lurker here for a few years, since the board was young. In that time there have been many changes in board culture, but I'd like to try to make this as nice a thread as can be found on 4chan -- so try not to troll. People will be building gear they need to be able to depend on, so don't tell them they can make an awesome backpack out of a trash bag and some duct tape.

Take it away, anons! I'll be by to post every now and again, but for the moment I'm at work and gotta get back to it.

I thought about putting it on diy, but I asked in the qtddtot here and a couple of anons showed interest. That, and there are no arduinos / imitation crab meat / killer wasps involved <insert cheeky emoticon and get called a faggot for it>.
Glad to have you aboard.
