To be safe: just don't do shabu, fuck underage girls/boys and be a dick in general and you will be all fine. As you will be in Manila(or even just Luzon) you will be safe from Abu Sayaf

If you will stay in Makati, you will be all safe and fine. Think of it like Singapore
Other places like Pasig, Pasay and Taguig are also nice places to go to, though certain areas there are less developed and more littered/smelly

Do not flash with things like smartphones and watches at night, or even bring with valuables if you are going to commute. If you happen to be as unfortunate as being mugged, just give your stuff away quickly if they are visible. Don't bother resisting at all with the dindu, if you want to get away unharmed

Though I heard it's much safer at night after DutDut got in, due to more police paroling in the NCR

I can give you alot of advice if you want. I just need the specifics

Which area of Queensland, specifically (it's a pretty big place)? If it's in the Gold Coast metro area in the southeast corner, it's basically the Aussie version of Florida (warm weather, beaches, theme parks, etc.). That part even has a few suburbs named after towns in Florida.

Taking 3/4 days off and i want to head over to montreal/quebec

What part of montreal is good for nightlife throughout the week? I was thinking of staying in the latin quarter but i really dont give a shit. Im going solo so i really want to just party like crazy with cute quebec girls without blowing my money on a hotel.

Side question, since im comming from ontario are there any spots on the way too montreal that i should hit up or are the other cities in quebec just sleepy small towns?
Just point me in the direction of girls with accents and no morals

I am thinking of completely dropping everything in the new years buying a one way ticket out of here, selling all of my stuff and seeing where I end up. including phones, stopping social media etc etc, but I didn't want to jump into this alone, I also don't want to do this alone....

Was looking for a partner, get chatting online first, meet up IRL then book it in good time, nothing rushed or too sudden, just time taken and a bit adventurous...

Any advice etc, or opinions...

Thailand or India for baby's first RealTraveler™ destination.

How much credit do you have?

I came back to India for the seventh time using $1100 in Delta Dollars. Round-trip from Chicago was about $850. Only reason I came here was because I was sick of my job and knew I could get by in Delhi or Mumbai. Otherwise I'd have flown to Brazil, Egypt, or Tanzania.

Not sure if you'd be able to get by with Turkmenistan or Tajikistan. The visa for the latter would be much easier to obtain, unless Ashgabat changed its rules and made the process simpler. However, I don't think Delta has direct routes which go too close to either country. Finding an affordable fare with them to India was a pain in the ass. Most of their flights were $100-$500 over my credit limit.

Really, it just depends on what you're into. Most people haven't heard of most places. Eastern Europe is fun, especially if you haven't traveled much - it's not terribly exotic but is easy to navigate and cheap. I liked Serbia and Bosnia/Herzegovina a lot.

If you fly somewhere like India or the UAE, you should be able to get round-trip tickets to much of Africa and SEA for dirt-cheap from there.

Heya /trv/,
my ma's going to have some training in the US from the company she's working for and decided to take me and my father along, we'll be staying at Fairfield, Connecticut for 10 days and will fly there this weekend.
We're from Indonesia and we've never been to the US before and have no idea where to go other than visiting New York and Massachusetts.
Do you guys have any recommendations of nearby places to visit? I kinda like visiting military/science museums or historical places, my ma loves shopping while my dad is interested in badminton.
So far our plan is to visit New York, Quincy Market, and I'm also interested in visiting HP Lovecraft's grave in Providence, RI.
And any do's and don'ts will be highly appreciated, and what's the easy way to get a sim card?

Thanks in advance guys!

>I kinda like visiting military/science museums
Maybe hit up West Point. You will need to bring identification though (Passport and Visa), they are pretty tight on that. It is in Orange County about an hour drive from Fairfield. I'm not sure how mobile you will be seeing as you're from another country and all.

Westchester, NY is the closest county in NY to Fairfield, CT. It is also the county directly above NYC. There are plenty of historical sites to see there. Many famous families in American history have estates there: Rockefellers, Astors, Vanderbilts. Sleepy Hollow is also there if you want to check it out. Seeing as you're interested in Lovecraft's grave I thought you might be interested in that. There isn't much to Sleepy Hollow besides spots like the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Old Dutch Church, and Patriot's Park though.

Here is a link of things to do in Westchester http://www.visitwestchesterny.com/index.php/things-to-do

There are historical trails you can follow in both NY and Massachusetts if that's your style. The freedom trail is a path in Boston that will lead you through Quincy Market, the Commons, Faneuil Hall, and other cool sites. Here is a link for that
http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/
Boston Museum of Science will be good if you're interested in science. The NYC Hall of Science seems to be geared towards kids so I would ignore that. The Franklin Institute would also be a good shout, but it is down in Philly which might be out of your way. The Charles Hayden Planetarium in Boston Museum of Science and the Hayden Planetarium in the American Museum of Natural History in NYC would also be cool to check out.

The northeast is teeming with historical sites, not just the museums.
Also, for shopping, the area you will be staying in will have a lot of premium outlets.

I go to school in Boston, but live in NY so I pretty much only know about what to do in those two areas. Hopefully someone else can chime in for the other areas.

Plan a day trip to New Haven for Italian American food, particularly sub type sandwiches and clam pizza at a joint called Pepe's. New Haven is as legit an Italian American place as NYC, South Philly and parts of the Jersey Shore.

oooh damn that's interesting, I'll be sure to check it out, gracias.

As for the transportation, we're planning to rent a car as all of us can drive (although I can only do automatics) and my father already received his international driving permit.

>>1178224
neato, does the pizza contain any pork products? me and my family are
muslims
so we can neither drink nor eat porks.
Although if I have to be honest I wouldn't mind eating them as I won't be visiting the US again in the next coupla years so I bet it's gonna be worth it, but my parents might not feel the same way. Thanks!

And how's the weather/temperature over there around this time compared to summertime London? I went to London last year for my summer course and despite it's "summer", it was still too damn cold for me I had to wear some extra layer of clothings.

Is it imperative to have a dedicated camera when traveling to a foreign country?

Of course, photos will always be nice to have, so you can cherish your memories of a place you've visited. But does an actual camera (as opposed to a mobile phone, let's say) make any difference at all?

And even if it's universally agreed that a real camera would be better than a smartphone, what kind of camera would be ideal? Just a simple digital camera that your mom brings to your little brother's soccer game, or that your uncle uses at every 4th of July BBQ? One of those big-ass DSLRs?

I've already set my mind on taking pictures of my destination, but I'm not sure what will give me the best experience. Obviously, I don't need a $6000 ultra-mega camera, but I'm also not broke enough to settle for an $80 dinky camera. If a $500 DSLR is more than enough to break the middle ground, then by all means say so.

Sorry if my post seems a little scatterbrained. I'm at the packing stage, and I'm stuck contemplating on cameras, and part of me thinks that a phone camera will cheapen my experience somehow.

No, not at all, and sometimes a shitty photo is all you need to relive a great moment, but a good camera is also a great asset.

If you want to get a DSLR, look into getting a decent camera that has been refurbished, ideally by Canon or Nikon.

I went on a big trip recently and got a refurbished Canon T5 with two kit lenses for around $300 which was (and still is) a good deal.
In retrospect, the bigger 70-300mm telephoto lens has been mostly useless, but the 18-55mm lens has been essential.
You can do the same -- more or less - for Nikon and you'll get great photos with either of them.

A camera phone might be fine for a lot of people, but it sucked shit for me because I could hardly ever see what I was doing when it was sunny outside, which happened often.
It was really only good for the convenience factor and small size.
>>
Well think about why you want the camera. If it's just for some selfies/memento snaps to post online, a nice phone will probably do.

If you want to actively photograph, and search out interesting things to snap, you'll probably need a better camera. You can get quite good P&S cameras these days, but obviously a DSLR will give you more flexibility and better results at the expense of portability.

If you want to take photos of wildlife/birds, lots of scenery and good low light shots, you will need a DSLR with a good lens for these to turn out acceptable. This can be quite an investment though, so be sure that you will get use out of the equipment besides your trip before going down this path.

Having a decent camera is very useful for lots of different things though, and like the other anon said, pick up a good enough DSLR body with a kit lens (will probably be as cheap or cheaper than a good P&S) and you can always spend thousands on your autistic 266 mm f/1.69 turbo lenses in the future if you feel like it.
>>
No, it's not.

SLR cameras are not magic. They don't turn selfies into high art. For most people, dropping $500+ on an SLR camera just so you can take photos of tourist traps is a complete waste of money, and your phone camera will suffice.

There was a time long ago when phone cameras had less than 5 megapixels, and they were shit. That's no longer the case today.

The main reason to have an SLR camera is because you can swap lenses, something you can't do with point and shoot cameras like "coolpix" or cellphone cameras. If you don't know shit about lenses, or you only plan on bringing one lens with you while travelling, you don't need an SLR camera. If you're planning on taking long exposure photography at night, if you want to take infrared photos, if you want to mess around with depth of field and apertures and shit, if you have a tripod and want to use it, then get an SLR camera and have fun laying into all the features and swapping out the guts and everything. But let's be real here, most people are too fucking lazy to even get down on one knee to take a photo from a more dynamic angle, and a lot of people buy these $500 SLR camera and never take it off autofocus-- and if that's you, then you don't need an SLR camera.

>a phone camera will cheapen my experience somehow.
It won't. Sometimes having less stuff with you makes a better experience.

Hello /trv/

I am planning to travel on the 23rd of December, and have transit in Zürich

The only thing that concerns me is that the time i have to get out of the plane and over to Terminal E is merely 40 minutes

So I wonder if any of you have been there and could estimate how long it would take to get through immigration, onto the metro and into terminal E, if the amount of time I have to get to the gate in time is realistically possible(running is fine), and if this ticket I plan to buy is worth it

It would be 10pm, and I assume the amount of people might be more or less than usual due to it being a day before Christmas

Is Zürich particularly busy in general, or just fine?
I also would like some nice instructions on how to get there as fast as possible
34 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Zurich is pretty efficient, but why 40 minutes? Did you buy two separate tickets? Anyway, if you land on time, you should be out of customs, terminal train, in terminal E in about 20 minutes if everything goes smoothly.
>>
>>1177469
I would agree, 20-30mins should be ok IF everything goes smooth nonetheless it's a gamble as the 22:40 flights are the last flights before the night curfew so there's no room to wait for delayed transfer passengers.
>>
>>1177425
Zurich is a big airport, but is known as maybe the worlds most efficient airport there is.

I landed from SFO on Terminal E last week. It took me 20 minutes from my seat in the plane to my seat in the subway into the city. Including passport, baggage etc. Don't worry.

Traveling is fun, start by hitchhiking around your own country if you don't have much money to spend.

For me the best part of traveling is getting into a transport and starting that journey to a new place, it's not about the photos and sights but the act of travel itself that hooked me.

Sup guys, I'm looking for people knowledgeable about Auckland, NZ youth hostels.
I'll be arriving next week for a year-long WHV, and I still don't have any accommodation.
I heard about YHA in Auckland City, any kiwi or former guest now if it's decent ?
Any other guest house rec ? Or even general tips about traveling around NZ ?

>>1178509
Kiwifag here, it's your bogstandard YHA - clean enough, decent location, staff seem nice. Can't really go wrong with YHAs or Hostelling Internationals.

Why Auckland? Where are you planning on travelling to/working?
>>
>>1178512
I absolutely have no idea yet about what I'm going to do. Landing in Auckland was the cheapest option, and I love big coastal cities.
I may travel later, but I'm thinking of working part-time first.
>>
>>1178513
OK, Auckland is pretty expensive right now. There's a housing bubble right now meaning property is the hot new investment in town - rent is pretty dang high.

That said, if you don't mind roughing it i'd recommend travelling round and seeing some of the sights before settling down and working - you might fall in love with somewhere else (Wellington for example is a fair bit smaller than Auckland but still coastal).

As an example, you can get from Auckland to Welly return for $29 (NZ $) - http://www.intercity.co.nz/

I can offer some more advice, but it'd be nice to know some basic stuff like budget, what you like doing/seeing, etc.

Ultimately, it's because despite how much better the 21st Century is in every conceivable way to any time before it, the average person's life path isn't nearly so clear. As a hunter-gatherer (what we were for most of our history) or even a medieval peasant, life is pretty clear, you bust your balls to put enough food on the table so that you can have as many children as possible be as strong as possible.

Now nobody really knows what they're doing or what their purpose is because they're blinded by the thousands of options we have today. There's also no real challenge in life or close contact with the things the human condition was designed to cope with. Travelling is a good way of getting in touch with some of those things, taking away all the noise and properly understanding yourself.

Don't get me wrong, as I said at the beginning anyone who says they wish they lived at any other time in human history is a moron and long term travelling can be pretty destructive too but there's no doubting the positive influence travel has had on my personality and outlook.
