Sup guys, I'm looking for people knowledgeable about Auckland, NZ youth hostels.
I'll be arriving next week for a year-long WHV, and I still don't have any accommodation.
I heard about YHA in Auckland City, any kiwi or former guest now if it's decent ?
Any other guest house rec ? Or even general tips about traveling around NZ ?

Kiwifag here, it's your bogstandard YHA - clean enough, decent location, staff seem nice. Can't really go wrong with YHAs or Hostelling Internationals.
Why Auckland? Where are you planning on travelling to/working?

I absolutely have no idea yet about what I'm going to do. Landing in Auckland was the cheapest option, and I love big coastal cities.
I may travel later, but I'm thinking of working part-time first.

OK, Auckland is pretty expensive right now. There's a housing bubble right now meaning property is the hot new investment in town - rent is pretty dang high.
That said, if you don't mind roughing it i'd recommend travelling round and seeing some of the sights before settling down and working - you might fall in love with somewhere else (Wellington for example is a fair bit smaller than Auckland but still coastal).
As an example, you can get from Auckland to Welly return for $29 (NZ $) - http://www.intercity.co.nz/
I can offer some more advice, but it'd be nice to know some basic stuff like budget, what you like doing/seeing, etc.

Budget would be around $4k. I was thinking of first exploring a bit around Auckland, working a bit and then move south (Wellington and Christchurch).
I'm planning on doing some diving, sailing too if I can. Maybe attend some motorsport events. I also dig urban photography.
I'm not really fond of trekking/hiking.

Hmm, in that case i'd stick mostly to the North - rule of thumb with NZ is North island for the people, South for the scenery.
I don't know much about Motorsport here, but i can't imagine it's very big - you'd have to research and plan around it.
When you say 4k, is that NZD, USD...?

It's in NZD, I'm from France.
I'm perfectly fine with scenery, as long as I don't have to walk/hike too much to get to it (I'm coping with some ankle tendinitis ATM, I can't walk too much with my leg hurting like hell)). If I get a car I intend to roam the fuck out of the country.
As for other stuff to do, I'm mostly counting on what other travelers may tell me. It worked like a charm before.

Sounds like you'll be fine then, I'd recommend checking out Queenstown after Christchurch as well. Otherwise, you should be good.

Airbnb nigga. Auckland is an airport, real new Zealand is outside auckland
If you're here long time and have drivers license, just buy a car, auction it when you leave
