Have you CouchSurfing /trv/ ? if so please share your experiences.

Couchsurfing is wasted novadays, especially in big cities. It is all about sexism, gay and free hotel (speaking about both sides).

If you're a guy - sorry. Mostly in popular places you will find 3.5 types of hosts:

1) Male Gay
2) Male nudist
3) Male wants to hook up and accepting girls only
3.5) Girl "maybe accepting requests" that never answering and have no profile filled.

I don't care about sexual preferences but somehow when gay host realize that you are straight they loose all the interest to you. Also once I had gay harassment (there was nothing about it in profile but IRL I've had to say NO quite several times).

On top of it most of frequent hosters tired of seeing too many people getting "star disease" and start to make rules as "I'm king, you're shit".

In third-word countries it works way better but you never know about real actual conditions (it might be a sleeping carpet under the open skies described as "comfortable bed").

On a side of hosters - they're overwhelmed by requests from stupid buttheads missing the point and taking CS as "free hotel" not giving shit about the whole idea.

It comes to easy sum up: CS is fucked up. Idea was good and worked well somewhere up to 2012. Now it is wasted.

It's great –I have been hosting in Budapest for like 8 months. I have 2 spare rooms and I like meeting travellers. I've always got people staying with me and it is an absolutely amazing way to meet travellers and feel like you're doing a nice thing.

I've probably hosted more than 40 different travelling groups in the last 8 months. Some stay for a night, others stay for a few...

I provide bed(s), towels and all the other basics. Usually we go out most nights and have a good time (as they are looking for fun).

I would highly recommend speaking to as many hosts as possible –much of what >>1176818 is a reality of CS but it's not all like that, there is still plenty of awesome hosts out there.

I recommend that if you want a good experience out of CouchSurfing –HOST WHERE YOU ARE – then build an international group of places you'll be able to stay when you travel. CouchSurfing is a 2-way street. Plus you'll already know the people who you are going to be staying with.

But still it is great – I am a 21-year-old Australian guy who happens to have made a lot of money early in life, so I have a very nice place in central Budapest with a cleaner and the lot. In many ways I am not the 'usual' couchsurfing experience, but if you can find others like me you'll have a gem of a time.

Some other quick fun facts, (from my experience)...
>Usually get 50/50 requests of guys and girls but, I often find girls are more organised and worried about travelling so they book ahead and therefore I probably end up hosting 2:1 girls/guys ratio.
>I am gay, but I have no plans on hooking up with guests – in fact I often feel very protective over my travellers! And if I want a fuck buddy Grindr can deliver that a lot more efficiently than CouchSurfing.
>I sometimes feel some travellers take a bit advantage of what I am offering –i.e. eating all my food, leaving the place a bit messy, getting a little bit too comfy, but honestly that's just me picking at straws

Going to Berlin next week, Does anyone have any recommendations for good bars/clubs?

Staying in kreuzberg btw

Residentadvisor berlin has all the events listed there. You will find great nightlife every single day in Berlin. The clubs are usually open until late in the morning.

You might be familiar with the door policies there. Don't be in too big groups, don't talk in the line, no photos, bring girls etc.. But from personal experience clubs like Tresor, Suicide Circus and watergate have been easy for me to get in. Cant tell if it's because of i am quite /fa/ or they are simply just easy to get in. These clubs are a bit touristy but are really good. Don't go to Matrix.

Clubs like sisyphos, berghain and about blank are probably the best but can be hard to get in if you don't speak german. These are only open from friday to sunday. Anyways these are all located close to eachother so you can just try other clubs if you get rejected at the door.

If you're into drugs, avoid the dealers near the clubs and inside too. Talk with locals in the clubs and you'll find way better pills.

Since you're going to berlin, you might aswell check out spreepark. It's an abandoned theme park a bit outide od the city. You aren't allowed to go there and it's guarded but if you get caught they will just throw you out. Nothing worse than that. Go to the river side lf the fence and there should be holes to sneak in.

>You aren't allowed to go there and it's guarded but if you get caught they will just throw you out
Ha maybe 10 years ago. Now they have razor wire fences, a private security firm, and guard dogs. If you are captured they'll hold you down until the police come so they can arrest/fine you for tresspassing.

GBR is dying. Also during Nov-Feb Northern QLD is so hot and humid it's not worth going.
Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast are all great destinations if planned well.
Gold Coast: rain forest hiking in spring brook, beaches, surfing, Currumbin wildlife sancuary
Sydney: Nice coastal walks at Bronte, Manly kayaking, botanic gardens
Melbourne: Hipster cafes and bars, museums, road trip to great ocean road
>>
>>1175170
So the GBR dies in the winter, or it is just dying in general?

Thanks for all the tips, maybe I'll give it a shot.

It is sustaining damage in some areas due to chemical (e.g. pollution from mining and agriculture) and biological (e.g. crown of thorns starfish plague) factors, but the damage is not that great. A lot of people leave disappointed when the reef isn't as colourful as it looks in nature documentaries and blame it on coral bleaching, rather than the fact that once you go more than a few metres underwater everything looks blue/grey no matter where you are, and those underwater documentaries are shot with a big-ass light shining on the coral to make the colour visible.

Probably everyone knows tripadvisor this days.

I have nothing against their service at all and i use it private myself.
What i want to talk about is the fact that it is not acting fair towards the business which is listed.

Following points are in my eyes almost illegal and i think tripadvisor should take more care about this issues:

1. A business can not decide themself if they want to be listed on tripadvisor. Everyone can put a review online and at the same time the business itself.

2. If a customer writes a review but he never stayed or used any service of the business, the business itself has to prove that this customer has never been offered any service which is most of the time almost impossible.
Because of this it is easy for competitor to harm your business and for the business it is impossible to prove it is a competitor.

3. Many people now a days write bad reviews cause they know they might get some money back from the one which provided the service in exchange to take the review offline.

I ask myself why does tripadvisor does not ask the reviewer for a proof like a invoice or a booking confirmation?

What are you thinking about the way tripadvisor treats businesses?
Most businesses pay for the service to edit their profile but don't get any other benefits from it.

Any ideas how to get tripadvisr to rethink their rules? ;-)

My wife and I would like to visit Switzerland in late December or early January. We would like to visit areas where snow is pretty much guaranteed. It doesn't snow where we live and last winter we went to Prague and Krakow and it snowed and it was a pretty neat experience. Housesteads (Vindolanda) is up to the north on Hadrian''s Wall, but get up there if you can.

Stuff at Bath is worth seeing but pretty "revised and extended" in later eras. Still, worth seeing.

Avebury, near Stonehenge is a larger monument without lintels, with several circles and long avenues -- the attraction there is that, unlike Stonehenge anymore, you can wander amongst the stones. A small village is built partially across the old monument, which is interesting if that sort of thing interests you -- you can see bits of some of the old standing stones built into some of the local architecture.

All of which you likely already know, if you are interested in this stuff at all.

How do I into cheap plane tickets? No matter when I check the prices they are always high. Tell me your secrets /trv/
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1176255
There are no secrets. Use the various "finding cheap tickets" sites if you like them, though my experience has been that I can do about as well booking directly from the airline with the added benefit that in case of issues, there is no third party in the mix. Look at budget airlines, look at alternate routes including airports near enough to your origin and destination to be worth the extra drive. Booking too early or too late often means higher costs, but you have to sort of play that by ear; there is no magic bullet number there. Avoid travel on or around major travel holidays to avoid premium prices associated with those dates. Travel off season when you can.

Take some time to visit the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland (pic related). It's a geological oddity with a lot of mythology surrounding it. It's only a short drive/tour bus ride outside Belfast. There is also the Carrick Reed (sp?) rope bridge around there which is fun/terrifying. Definitely cross it.

Belfast city itself has lots of history. Get one of the famous black cab tours and see the peace walls and murals. I know you said you're staying in Cork in the south of the island but Ireland is tiny so travelling North isn't a big deal.

Hi /trv/, I will have a half month trip to Germany next month. First I will arrive in Dresden from Prague and spend 3 days in there. Then I'd like to take flixbus to Berlin and stay in it for 3 days as well. After Berlin I will take a plane or direct train to Nuremberg and have a 3-4 nights in there while taking two day trips to either Wurzburg/Bamberg/Rothenberg. Finally after Nuremberg I will take bus again to Munich and end my trip there after 3 days trip.
My questions are: Is there any cheaper or more efficient way to travel through these 4 major cities or simply have a better itinerary in this regard?
Question 2: between a day trip to Wurzburg/Bamberg/Rothenberg, which two out of three are more recommended? Since I will only have 3 days to spend in Nuremberg and planning on using a whole day to navigate through Nuremberg I couldn't possibly do all of them. Last question : Any fun place/event or must see in the above mentioned 4 cities? I like historic sites as well as sublime museums while pristine nature are very much welcomed too. Although hip places mainly for youngsters generally aren't much my kind of thing, I still won't say no and like to know the options. In a nutshell, I am very open to much everything if it's good and the recommendations are the more the merrier.
Thanks in advance for replies and sorry for my poor spelling and grammar.

Dresden doesn't deserve 3 days. The old town is very small and all reproduction. You can see everything to be seen in less than 8 hours. Check out Bastei and the stone bridge which is nearby Dresden. You can take the S-Bahn to see it. After that, you can spend a day in Leipzig before going to Berlin.

Buses are unfortunately the cheapest method of transportation aside from budget airlines or promotional rail offers.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is definitely worth it. Bamberg and Würzburg are also quite nice so it's up to you which to decide.
>>
>>1176577
Thanks m8. Much appreciated. Does Nuremberg itself deserves a good whole day to explore or need even more time? I also plan on having a day trip to Potsdam when in Berlin, is it anything good?
>>
>>1176580
Nürnberg does deserve to be seen but much of it is reproductions as well. 90% was destroyed by allied bombing raids. Potsdam is also good. You can there for 3€ with the S-Bahn from Berlin. Potsdam is home to the many palaces and places from Prussian kings. A day is good to spend there.
