Is Portland, Oregon overrate?

It depends on you and what you want.

Personally I think American liberals/hipsters are THE most unbearable people on planet earth. You take that American stubborn pride and hostile, argumentative attitude they're famous for, and add a huge helping of self superiority and you have the epitome of a shitty individual.

Some people like liberals, if you're about that you'll have a blast in Portland. Just know no matter what you're doing there'll be someone to tell you why what you're doing is wrong.

West Coast is dead. East Coast is dead. South is dead. Mid-west is dead. Hawaii is dead.
If you want to live somewhere scenic but not cucked, move to Alaska or Montana.

For those of you that followed the previous thread concerning my yearly summer trip (Mauritania - Cameroon - Kenya) by motorcycle, here's the new thread.

Arrived on Saturday in Nouakchott, Mauritania, and spent the last couple of days hunting for a bike. Found it, finally, bought it, (picture), and waiting for some roadside mechanic to check everything and build me some carriers for the bags and jerrycans.

The bike was fairly cheap after long negotiations, but comes without papers or licence plate. I had to find a contact than can get me fake documents and plates to be able to cross borders. Those should be done within 48 hours.

After that I'll head up to Nuadhibou, before coming back down to Senegal, where I got invited by someone for the end of Ramadan.

More info to come as wifi and local SIM cards allow.

Enjoy!

Sweet, keep us updated French anon, we were looking forward to this thread.

Do you think that the fake documents and plates will pass inspection? It would suck to have your bike impounded somewhere because a border guard knew what to look for.

No real way to know until you try. I found some dude that has a friend in the mauritanian customs administration, such as it is, so they're "fake-real" papers. The plates and papers will actually be in the system. In any case, this is Africa, should there be any problem, it'll come down to a few discreet bills, never an impound. But we shall see!

Had supper at a new mauritanian friend's house.

I'm going to South Korea for 17 days (from dec 26 until jan 13) alone. I've been there before but couldn't visit the country properly, mainly because of work. Any recommendations? I'm more interest in which cities should I visit. I already visited Seoul and Daejeon but that's it.

I like reefer, pussy, martial arts and vidya. But the purpose of the trip is to go somewhere radically different than what I'm used to. I do like nature and cultural sites like ruins and temples so i would like to experience that. Somewhere with young travelers partying and sluts "finding themselves" would be a bonus too.

This probably doesn't need its own thread, but I need to know. Do Swedes really drink Filmjölk? Is it popular there? What is the most popular drink in Sweden? Like what sweet tea is to the American South.

Also, Sweden thread.

This should be on int really.

But sure. Yes we do. Yes pretty popular for breakfast but we don't really drink it on it's own. Rather eat it with cereals or something.
We drink a lot of coffee and tea here.

It is essentially cultured buttermilk. I think they usually use the same bacteria for fermentation, even.

In Norway we use it for waffles, "sveler/lapper", cakes, baking in general, really. Anything with baking soda, which needs an acidic environment to produce gas.

Hey /trv/
Spending a 2 night 3ish day layover in Iceland before travelling back to Canada for Christmas to visit the family. Apart from the tripadvisor sights and touristy things to do, what are your experiences? anything off the beaten path? Not looking in the direction of getting wasted or picking up chicks.
Cheers!

In late December, the beaten path is largely going to be closed and under a lot of snow. And away from Reykjavik a lot of stuff will be boarded up for the winter, as far as restaurants and lodging.

You might look into seeing if any of the companies that might have a"super-Jeep" tour or other vehicle that can handle shit conditions is willing to do anything for you.

Note that you'll have about 4 hours of daylight...
http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/iceland/reykjavik?month=12 That's going to limit your excursion time.

Temperatures run on average of a high around 4 C (39 F) and a high of 0 C (32 F)m chance of a sunny day is around 7% and almost a 50/50 chance of active snowfall.

Otherwise, Google things that you might want to do in Reykjavik, and maybe plan to sleep by day and stay up late to look for auroras. (Best Aurora viewing will be away from the city, though...)

What sort of budget you got? It's not an inexpensive place.
>>
>>1174538
This guy knows. You're pretty much stuck in the city and at the mercy of guided tours.

1) You'll book your room in Reykjavik, with a rental car to get there or some arranged transport, and if your layover is crazy early morning, you'll kill your first few hours in the Blue Lagoon or maybe even stay at their new hotel to get around the check-in issues. Then, you'll do some city tours, maybe the volcano movie and the other museums, the cathedral and possibly some shopping. Dine and drink your duty free booze (or spend a lot), and try a club night, have a nice dinner somewhere possibly on laugaveger or other downtown street, soak in the hotel hot pot or the local choices. Get your hot dog. Get your liquors tried. (P.S. I've never once had a bad meal in Iceland, it's like they all went to chef school).
2) You'll book a northern lights tour, or someone who might be doing some sightseeing packages, maybe a waterfall, some spelunking, jeep tour or something like that, you can even fly to another place for a tour.

There isn't a whole lot to do in Winter, but the people and the spa-like fresh food are lovely experiences as is the fresh air. There is a Christmas spirit going on. Great winter clothing shopping (though not unpricey). I like a place simply called Iceland bar. It has some local choices, as few as they are. http://islenskibarinn.is/net/

So, I'm planning to spend the winter in Morocco, with a home base in Essaouira. I'll be working there remotely, so I need to be in places with a stable internet connection (or have an alternative).
Anyone done something like that, have any tips for long time stays overall or in morocco?

>>
>stable internet connection
>morocco
aaaay lmao

desu i dont know about essaouira specifically, but my experience outside of the big cities was that internet connection was shit everywhere except some bigger hotels

if youre white dont even bother fitting in with the locals, they will swarm you everywhere and try to sell you something all the time, or lead you to the shop or restaurant of a relative or friend. it will never stop even after weeks of being there they wont give up on you. always say no, never ever go with them or the 2 minute walk will turn into 30 minutes to a place you dont know how to get back from. however they dont mean ill and theyre generally very nice people and its ok and necessary to say no. just say "tomorrow in'shallah" which means "if God wills it ill be here tomorrow" but in reality its code for "i have no intention to do what you want me to do"

buying anything youll automatically get a foreigner tax of about +100% so you really need to talk them down hard
at the airport money exchange make sure you get small bills because no one will accept the big ones
>>
I've been there for a week this month so I experienced some of the... offensive selling as you say. The city is (I hope) big enough to get something stable.
I just found that it's a place I want to try living in for a while longer. Warm them bones up.

Not counting airfare, 1 week in USA can get you way more than two weeks in Vietnam.

Hue is better than both. But Ho Chi Minh is a giant city where even crossing the road is a little terrifying. Hanoi is a historic, small city where communists on loud speakers berate you and still think they control the country.

Wife and I just booked a ticket to Bali for our honeymoon. We know nothing about the place.
We had fun renting motorbikes in Vietnam so we're planning on doing the same in Bali. Basic questions:
-Have we doomed ourselves to three weeks of being surrounded by hung-over Straya Cunt Bogans, resentful locals, and pushy trinket sellers? I don't like how on-the-beaten-track Bali seems (let the insults flow forth)
-Are motorbikes a good way to get around Bali? As I said it was fun in Vietnam but it was by no means a good way to get around.
-We're outdoor lovers. Is there any actual rainforest in Bali where we can go hiking?
-What are some nearby islands we could hop to? We like snorkeling.
Budget is, I dunno, like $2K for three weeks excluding flights.

Bali general, I guess. Please dump any photos of cool places.

Renting scooters/bikes is 100% doable mate. It's the national mean of transportation.
How I made my trip:
>rent scooter
>improvise shit up as I went.
Tourists are very much concentrated in the, well touristic area, white sand beaches, bar and clubs galore, and the like, you can explore the backcountry as you wish.

Hey /trv/, in a couple of weeks I'll be in Florence, and coincidentally it turns out that on the first Sunday of each month all the museums are free. I would like to take advantage from that and visit the Uffizi Gallery, but I absolutely don't want to waste hours in queue because everyone had my same thought.

So, have any of you ever been in Florence during the first Sunday of the month? What am I to expect? Should I show up in front of the Gallery at 5 am to avoid hours of queue?

Planning a trip around the world, but a problem I have is that I need bi-weekly medical shots because of my medical sickness. These shots need to be kept in cool temperature before I take them. How can I travel the world like this?

Cold packs, a mini cooler and careful planing.

How do you do shorter trips? Adapt that plan.

And consider how fucked you are if shit turns brown on you -- sounds like balancing risks/rewards here is going to be important. I would at least figure out what your closest point of re-supply is for each planned stop.
>>
>>1173794
There are many insulated bags with cold packs/ice packs on the market, but virtually all of them will require you to have access to a freezer or ice every 24 hours or so... some interesting discussion here: http://saidsupport.org/medication-travel-cooler-bag-recommendations-from-our-patient-community/

I'm a Type I diabetic, and have traveled in very hot places for up to a few months at a time with a supply of insulin--I made sure to have access to freezers or at least fridges for cold packs (hotel fridges are often good but don't always have a freezer compartment). And I made sure to always have air conditioning in my rooms, which mostly keeps the drugs below the temperature at which they would cook. But having ice and a small cooler for transit (a day on a bus or train in high heat conditions) was essential.
>>
>>1173794
Well you can, but you'll need to travel with some planning. The more remote, primitive and southerly you destination the higher the probability that the vital serum you need twice a week will have been exposed to temperatures that will render it ineffective and lead to your death. I'm guessing from this you are a bleeder or a hemophiliac. So stay to the northern, developed, civilized parts of the globe or the very southerly more primitive parts (during their winter which is usually the summer in the UK). Good luck and have fun.

Never have been on this board before, but thought this was the best place to ask. My best friend, younger brother and I (including wives/gfs) are planning on going to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. I personally want to spend a week before the games start and the 2 weeks or so of the events.

About how much would this cost? (Not including tickets to the events)

Would I be able to get by not knowing japanese considering it's a major international event?

Are there things I should do outside of Tokyo in the week before the games? (because i'm going to try and see as many events as I can, I most likely won't be leaving Tokyo)

stop right there, you can't inb4 weeb if you're literally going to post a picture of japanese anime.

>currently wondering If I need to teach myself Japanese first or If I can go to school and learn

if you're serious about wanting to move to japan, or any foreign country really, it's best to start learning the language on your own at home before moving. Showing up with no knowledge of the language and THEN expecting to just pick it up will be difficult at the very least.

did you even think about this before you made your thread?
