I just got accepted to an exchange program with an university in Bloemfontein.

I know almost nothing about the city or even the country.
The exchange starts in July and lasts for 5 months so I have plenty of time to prepare.

Any tips, recommendations, experiences and such that you can share are much appreciated.

No idea what that is and googeling did not help much either.

Also, I am white. How will that impact my experience? And should I learn some Afrikaans before I arrive?

Our gov website (UK) has travel advice for going away to countries.

gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt

I've not been to Egypt in some time and even then it was only to sharm el sheikh, but if you're going alone, be wary of your possessions and be respectful to people you encounter. If you're traveling with people, then just make sure you guys know where you'll be. Create points to which you can find your way back to, and regroup, should you need it.
My family have told me of times that they'd been locked in shops, and were told to buy something before they could be let out. I doubt that will happen to you, but just be assertive if you need be.
The vast of majority of people you encounter will be friendly (not to mention the countless other tourists).

I didn't quite know what else to share with you, as really you'll get by on common sense and respectful behaviour alone, for the most part.

Yeah, don't do that.

Besides being shitty, Cairo was recently bombed. Egypt is rife with crime and scams. It will be virtually impossible to have a good time without a very trusted local guide.

I was recently in Egypt, Cairo and Sharm, pic related, nothing but pollution, poverty and political unrest.

What songs make your skin go pic related and makes you want to travel (again)?

And which songs makes you nostalgic and remind you of a previous trip and why?

>>Ben Howard - Every Kingdom, the whole album instantly takes me back to my SEA trip 3 years ago.
Best song: The Fear: "I've been worrying, that we all live our lives in the confines of fear". Makes me want to gtfo here so badly. Powerful lyrics.

For me get up kids- long way from home still takes me back to Denmark. Even though the trip is almost ten years ago. It might have been due to the fact that fell in love there for the first time.

Then there is weepies-early morning riser which takes me back to the first train trip of my first solotrip. It was Barcelona-Valencia. If you ever take that ride make sure to see sunrise on the train

Nice trips.

God Moving Over the Face of the Waters by Moby once played as I was driving over a huge suspension bridge while the sun was setting. I was one of the only cars around.

It was truly surreal.

Going in March after 7 years.

Any tips on apps and tech that they have released for the guests? Anything for Universtan and IoA?

I've only found an app that basically shows you the map and directions to the app and they told me they got wifi on the whole park now.

Disney Parks let you book fast passes in advance now using smartphone apps. They have sensors at the gate and at the ride entrances that detect these things. They also have this new MagicBand system, wearable tech that acts as your park ticket, fast pass, and restaurant reservation. All tickets are embedded with these same tech things also, so you can just use that instead of the MagicBand. Oh, and the MagicBands also open the door to your Disney hotel room (no more plastic key card things).

Does anyone actually eat half the airline food?

I almost never eat the "main course" because it's usually just plain gross. The bread, the side dish (usually a salad), and the sweet will be good. But the main dish will just be.... Awful

Does anyone actually eat that shit? And is there any polite way to request everything but the main dish

I eat everything they give me. Even the roll. Some airlines, and I'm thinking of emirates in particular, have excellent food onboard.

I even eat whatever squash dish or crazy vegetable I usually hate that they give me. Airline food has come a long way.

So a friend and I were planning on doing a trip to southern Africa some time next year, and we're looking at different places and tours to take. So many people go to see the safaris and nature, but I was hoping to see the history and battlefields, particularly Boer and colonial stuff.

Any suggestions? I found this one tour with an old Rhodesian soldier who sings about the border war and takes you to battlefields in Natal, and I've got a few memorials and closed Afrikaner communities on the list.

Here's a very rough outline:
>Voortrekker Monument, with monument to downed Rhodesian Airliner somewhere nearby, not advertised
>Kleinfontein, near a Boer battlefield, now a closed community of separatists
>Hoedspruit, to chill with anti-poachers
>Plasmoorde Monument to farm murders
>Grave of Cecil Rhodes on top of the mountain
>Allen Wilson memorial, in the middle of the bush that's only found by GPS and not on the map
>Caprivi Strip and back

There has to be some other stuff, too. Keep in mind I can't loop back down through Cape Town, I'll be east and central southern Africa. Any memorials, battlefields, war damage, controversial shit or dark tourism?

The battleground where Roakes Drift was fought. Museums representing both sides. If you saw Zulu you know the battle. It's in KwaZulu.

>"flag" with three other flags superimposed on it

>>
>>1191228
Zulu is one of the reasons I'm so interested in it, I saw it a while back and really liked the scenery, and also the contrast between Brits and Boers. The tour is organized with John Edmond, an old Rhodie soldier and musician, who sings back at the lodge about the battle after you're taken on a tour of Roakes Drift and a few other battlefields over 4 days. Chill as fuck, I might try to see Lesotho after (before heading north) but I've heard the roads are death traps.

I'm going to spain next month and I'll have about 5 days to explore. I am most likely only going to madrid and barcelona. The question is, which city should I spend more of my time in? Flying into madrid and then flying to barcelona and back.

Definitely want to tour some architecture and hit some museums but I am also really into food and have friends coming along so we'll want to go to bars at night.

Which city is worth more of our time?

Kind of a pointless question. 2 full days in each, 1 morning in one and one evening in the other, with midday going to transit.

Most places have at least a week's worth of interest in them. This looks like more of a driveby holiday.
>>
Just cancel your trip.

Spain has some of the dullest metropolitan areas and is filled with some of the laziest people with terrible teeth.

However, Madrid > Barcelona
>>
>>1190393
2 days in Barcelona. That should honestly be enough to see what there is to offer. To be honest, I wasn't that big a fan of the place. The people aren't very friendly, but that's mostly because it's absolutely swamped with tourists 24/7. There are much better places to see in Spain (for instance, Seville is absolutely wonderful) but if you only 5 days and are set on it then it's worth seeing for what's there. The food's p good too.

Do 3 days in Madrid. 2 actually in-city, and 1 to take a day trip to Toledo. Toledo is about an hour by bus from Madrid, and in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. It's a touristic place that actually lives up to the hype. Beautiful mudejar architecture, the most awe-inspiring cathedral I've ever seen, interesting history, and great food. If you want a more "Spanish" experience, then visiting Toledo is a must.

I want to go hunting and shooting in 2017, but I also want to travel in South Asia.

Where are the best places in South Asia to combine the two? Basically everywhere from India to Indonesia interests me.

I also want to go horse around in Mongolia, but something tells me game is thin on the ground there. So it's only on the table on the off chance I am wrong about that.

I don't expect or want to hunt big cats or elephants, the first because I am a coward, the second because elephants are noble animals.

Dunno about southern Asia, but big game hunting's a thing in northern Asia. Elk, tigers, etc. Helps that deer are delicious.

Just remember that Mongolia has really weird border, visa, and travel laws. Might be wise to have a looksee before making a commitment.

>January/early February
Winter and snow. On the cold unpleasant sector. Depending on when the snow falls are cities may look nice or very depressing thanks to post-Soviet era decay.

>How bad is the gypsy problem?
It will not affect you. In Sofia they stick to the ghetto. In Plovdiv they are a BIT more civilized. You might actually see some.

>Will people speak much English?
Fair amount. Network ahead on Couchsurfting/Tinder.

>Do Bulgarian women like foreigners?
Just because you're foreign? No.

Where you from, senpai. What do you want to get out of Bulgaria? How long you stayin, budget, etc. I can show you around Sofia if you want to meet up.

You can leave your car in a safe parking lot on the US side of the border for $30. It's about a 5-10min walk to customs. If you're caucasian you'll be through in 10 minutes.

Look for TAXI LIBRE on the Mexican side of the border, ask for a ride to the zona, pay him 5$ US, and get yourself some beef tacoz son.

Hello anons,

I've googled around for a bit but honestly the results are filled with rather normie ideas for activities (going to the spa?!).
I'm wondering if it's worth going to Zurich at the end on January, for 4-5 days. At least one of them will be taken up with this event I'd go to (lots of walking through the city).
But for the other 3-4 days, would there be much to do/see?

I love walking a lot in new cities and just seeing stuff. I can also appreciate a couple of museums (hopefully open in the weekend), but I'm unlikely to go to stuff like the theater or the movies while traveling.
I'll be going by myself

Thoughts/suggestions?
Also: is there usually snow at the end of January over there? I love me some snow and that kind of dry cold with little wind, and where I live now there's barely ever any snow

Plenty of museums, the one I would recommend are:
>Kunsthaus (art gallery)
>Swisss National Museum (swiss history and shit)
>Natural historical and Medical historical museum (free, located at the University)
Plenty of smaller art museums depending on your taste...

If you don't mind to take the train about 30min away is
>Technorama Winterthur

and 1h away:
>Verkehrshaus Luzern, Lucerne

The Zoo is pretty good, a cruise on lake Zurich to Rapperswil is always great (about 2h) and many more. If you have any specific interests just ask...

The world is an almighty big place as is your mind with its wants and needs.

The best thing about travel is discovery, not just doing what others recommended.
So tell us first what places you've been to that have really touched or changed you and why, and maybe we'all know something similar

I have a fascination with secluded, uninhabited islands across the world. Many often have histories of becoming temporary homes to shipwrecked castaways or monasteries for medieval monks. In the second half of the 19th century, the New Zealand government deliberately introduced rabbits and sheep to the isolated Auckland islands as a food source for any shipwrecked sailors, of which there were many.

I'm lucky to be in a position where I can pursue my interests without the financial worries. In February I set sail for Disappointment island in my yacht to explore any evidence left behind by the survivors of the Dundonald shipwreck of 1907. The men survived off seal meat and built sand dunes for shelter. They had one match between them which they used to light a fire that was never allowed to go out. Sorry lads, taking selfies with the Eiffel tower doesn't satisfy my travelling urge. I want to explore.

Living in Miami, there are several choices of 1 hour little bay trips to out islands that are kind of fun, especially all up and down the Keys. The Bahamas have many that simply don't have fresh water sources, which is why they never really took off for civilization but are gorgeous paradises with crystal clear waters and white sand, even for 1 solitary millionaire, it just isn't enough to to inhabit for very long.

There's one cool site I've read about and then got to see later by boat. The Cape Romano house used to be on a private island, but well, the ocean intervened to take over the shoreline and made them uninhabitable. At the time they wanted to build a seawall to protect the houses, the environmental laws about seawalls took effect and it was denied. Buh bye family home. It was an odd architectural thing during the "dome house" phase. Here's someone collection of found photos...
https://youtu.be/XxEP3jgOEmM

Marco Is and the surrounds are called the 10,000 islands, so there's quite a few places to tie up for a fun day's of uninhabited island living.
>>

i have that same isolated island fetish.. but it looks like your on a higher level. i am fascinated by islands like azores, st helena, tristan de cunha, pitcairn.. even though i would also prefer them uninhabited. whats you favourites and can you name some more, uninhabited islands with fresh water sources?
>>
Going on my honeymoon to Indonesia in January; we've been tossing around the idea of paying someone to take us to an uninhabited island and pick us up a week later. We'd bring enough water, plus fishing equipment.
Any ideas where exactly we could do this? I know there are paid services for this exact thing, but I feel like we could save a bundle and support some local fisherman at the same time.
