I need suggestions. I am trying to figure out where I can travel for 2 weeks in January. I am an American that speaks English and some Spanish, living in Germany. I want to go somewhere that isn't the cliche type of tourist destination like london, Paris or Las vegas. I've been to czech, poland, sweden, switzerland, ireland, guam, japan, thailand, and south Korea (not looking to do a repeat). I want to go somewhere that will have a cheap ass living cost, where I can drink, possibly mingle with locals, and potentially bang local girls. I'm trying to stay around Europe, Asia, and Australia but it isn't 100% necesary...just not trying to spend over $800 on just a flight

Anywhere in southeast asia sounds like it would fit your needs. Soecifically Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam/Philippines/Malaysia
>>
>>1187322
>>1187321
Just saw that You have already been to Thailand, but the rest of the list remains valid. I do hope you don't consider a "repeat" as a universally bad thing though. Taveling to the same country but a different region can create vastly different experiences. We all travel for our own reasons though. To each his own.
>>
>>1187324
Lol, don't get me wrong. I have a limited amount of time here in Europe so I'd prefer not to repeat. I'd go back to Thailand, but I feel like I dodged a bullet..I fucked 2 whores knowingly and a third that turned out to be a whore....who bled all over the place, a random 4th, and almost a lady boy....but came back clean. I feel like if I went back I'd go more extreme. So it almost feels risky. I'd also go back to Ireland because they like to party and there are lots of hot girls that like Americans. Any of those countries in particular though?

Hello /trv/,

I would like some advice from somebody who maybe has a more experience than I do.

A couple friends and I are planning a trip to Pripyat - the ghost town in Ukraine that was evacuated after the explosion of the Chernobyl NPP in 1986. Due to the half-lives of the isotopes in the area, large parts of the town are safe. There are guides that offer tours on very strict and tested waypoints for people who are interested, and they take you around the town and offer some back story to the area.

My friends and I live in Canada, and a ticket to anywhere in the Ukraine at this moment would set us back roughly $1400 each. So we decided to make a larger Europe trip out of it, to make it more cost effective. The problem is, we don't know where to start, or even finish.
None of us have traveled very much, and I actually have not even been out of my country.

Can anybody offer me advice or suggestions? Anything from other countries in the area to see, other landmarks to visit, perhaps places to avoid, and a start-to-finish route to travel. We would be backpacking, and would not leave for at least another year to prep, financially and knowledge-wise.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

TL;DR: going to Pripyat help

visted there for 2 weeks about 7 years ago to hang out with a college buddy who was from ukraine. im from wisconsin, similar climate as where your from. if your going over summer, beware. its FUCKING hot there. like, youll be drenched in sweat within minutes after leaving the house (assuming its air conditioned, otherwise your already drenched). spent first week in kiev. lots of stray dogs. i remember my buddy telling me to not mention to anyone that im american. said people may see that as an opportunity to rob me. bring sunglasses. lots of good looking women over there. against popular belief of westerners, vodka is not their most popular beverage. mostly beer, which we were drinking in public often. they have mcdonalds over there and shit, but they dont put ice in the cups. do NOT drink water from faucets and shit. there plumbing is original from CCCP days, much like everything there like roads, subways, etc. a bottle of water in the city was like 4 or 5 USD. a pack of smokes was about 1 dollar. riding the subway cost like 1 cent US.

Happy to hang out with you guys if this happens on january-february next year

Visiting Oregon in a few months. What should I expect?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.

Really depends on where you go. Mostly pretty friendly everywhere, I can't think of anywhere with particularly nasty people. Although places like Eugene and Klamath Falls get a lot of bad rap for the druggies. Eastern Oregon is more conservative, and it's of course the more chaparral/desert side of Oregon. Mostly middle- upper class in places like Bend, Redmond, Sisters. Lots of little old western style buildings, it's pretty cute. Tons of really neat hiking areas with caves and shit. Expect TONS of roundabouts if you go through Bend.

West side is a lot more liberal of course, it's generally what people think of when people think of Oregon and their tree-hugging hippies. It's a lot more lower class on this side of the range, and you will run into a lot more homeless, crazies, druggies, and all other thing that goes with poor areas. Again, there's a lot of great hiking opportunities- mostly scenic woodsy places. Columbia Gorge is gorgeous, but it can get pretty crowded around some of the waterfalls.

As far as laws and things, well. Recreational marijuana is a thing of course... No sales tax for the most part- it is illegal to pump your own gas (lol). Otherwise from that, not sure what's important. Do you have any specific questions?

I'm a resident, been here my whole life. Familiar with quite a bit of it.
>>
>>1187201
Also new to this board, so not sure if there is some obvious base/general questions that would normally be expected by a frequentee.

portland is a shitty city, but the state has a lot of great nature: beaches, snowy mountains, deserts, forests

tourism is a big thing, so locals are friendly to most outsdiers

if you're there in early 2017, expect a lot of clouds and some rain

I'm from BR hue and I'll be backpacking through Europe from December to March with a couple of friends! I've never done it before, so I'm literally having multiple feelings ranging from anxiety to orgasmic-on-the-road-happiness.

First of all, this polish film I watched, "All These Sleepless Nights" got me inspired as hell. All the nightlife and living and spontanous scenes got me going. And now I'm thirsty for this.

So I have some questions:

1. What books should I take? (Walden and The Catcher in The Rye is already in my bag)
2.What albums/bands should I take in my iPod?
3.What parties should I go? I'd really like to know the true nightlife from every single place I visit.
4.What drugs should I try, in which places they are trustable? Because why not trip while you trip
5.Company? Let's backpack together! Or maybe we could hang out wherever city I'm visiting.

I'll be visiting France, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria and maybe Poland.

Peace out

Is it a bad idea to go to Egypt in winter? I want to see most, if not all the major historic stuff.
I want to go at winter break because in summer I wouldn't be able to bear Egypt's heat, also I am 19 right now and before I turn 20 I can get Visa on arrival from Egypt.

Would any place be closed at winter? (probably in the middle of january, but can be anything from the start of january to middle of february). Would it be to wet/snowy to travel between cities? What should I expect?

Also, would going to Petra and then going to Egypt through the Red Sea make it a lot harder? Should I just go directly to Egypt or is crossng through Jordan a good idea?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Absolutely. I went to Egypt in February and the weather was really nice. Rarely too hot. The only hot stretch was a mini bus to Abu Simbel through the desert with no AC. Contrary to what you may think too, anywhere well south of Cairo, the Nile is very clean and you can actually drink the water right from the river. Take a felucca trip if you can. I recommend only a few days in Cairo, gtfo as quick as you can. I know nothing about traveling from Jordan.
>>
>>1187334
how long does it take to get to luxor and from there to abu simbel from cairo? i am pondering whether going all that way would be worth it, considering i'd probably have to return to cairo to get bback home. also, is it really worth to see those places? I do want to see the historic stuff (that's why i go), but if it's just one temple, I can save myself the hassle.

alright /trv/ i'm a total travel noob so I figured I'd ask the internet for some help.

the gf and i are looking to end 2016 or start 2017 with an all inclusive vacation. that being said we can't really decide where to go.

We are leaning towards Mexico because she's never been. Keep in mind we don't want to do much other than to drink our asses off and eat. We don't party so it doesn't have to have great night life. I've been to Cancun and kind of hated it so she doesn't seem to want to visit that side.

Puerto Vallarta seems the next best, as I've had family that has gone and loved it. That being said it, I've heard its getting dated and just full of older couples there. We'd like people close to our age, early twenties to mid thirties. Also that the weather isnt the greatest in January.

I know there are many other destinations that are plausible, Playa del Carmen, Cabo, Punta Cana, and even more obscure places I don't know much about.

Any input would be awesome!

>tl;dr: vacation to mexico in jan 2017, which is the best place to go? must be all inclusive and 4.5-5 stars, we want to feel spoiled.

I would recommend Punta Cana.
Personally I have been to hotel Occidental Punta Cana, which is cool because there's a night club attached to the resort, and all the people from other resorts go there (there's only like 2-3 night clubs in Punta Cana).
Food and drinks are great, rooms are decent, beach is superb. Anyway you can check prices as they're pretty straight-forward; more luxurious = more expensive.
The only thing that sucks about Punta Cana is you won't want to leave the hotel. As soon as you step out of the gates and venture into the city, every fucking body asks you for money and shit, it's annoying.

Pueto Vallarta meh... don't go there. The beach suck. As for Playa Del Carmen, it's a bit like Cancun, except more calm and with less drunk douchebags.

PS: can you / would you consider Cuba? Best bang for the buck
>>
>>1186939
They are all the same. You won't get out of the hotel territory anyway, and inside it is no different from any other resort anywhere in the world.

Sorry, not here to answer your question. But is Russian an easy language to learn if you're an English speaker?
>>
>>1186894
Why would it be an easy language if it's completely unrelated? I'm Slavic and Russian is still pretty incomprehensible to me, I'd have easy time learning its grammar and pronunciation isn't a problem, but still would have to learn vocab.
>>
>>1186894
I learned French and German both in the same year. I've been trying Russian two years now and can barely read and write it

Never traveled before and thinking about going to Hawaii on a whim sometime this December or January, is it worth it if only for about 3-4 days and on a budget of a couple hundred dollars tops (not including airfare)? My plans, or lack thereof, basically consist of just showing up, pitching camp at some site, and visiting whatever beaches or trails that're within walking distance. Needless to say, open to any and all suggestions or advice.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Do it! Hawaii is amazing for whatever you do! Maybe add another day for 5 days and it will definitely be worth it
>>
>>1186874

OP, it will help if you tell us which Hawaiian island you will stay in. I've been to the main island and Maui.

Yes, several hundred dollars (not including airfare) will be enough for three to four days, as long as you really count your pennies. Everything is imported there so it's an expensive place.

Why are you going for only three or four days? I'd highly recommend going longer. Stay in a hostel. The wildlife and beaches are beautiful. Also, Hawaii is not for partying and getting shit-faced. Most people go there to relax, get away from it all, and experience the beauty.
>>
>>1186887
Thank you for the encouragement, glad to hear it's nice!
>>1187007
Planned on doing the big island but I'll definitely take your recommendation between the two. 3-4 days is just about all I manage as is thanks to work, but if 5-7 or some such is real difference maker, I'd definitely say fuck it and take the plunge. Luckily relaxing and sightseeing are exactly all that I plan on doing. I'm quite shy and only 19 anyways, so no worries about any grand delusions of getting smashed and banging the locals.

Too general. There's tons of stuff to do.

Any cities I should skip or include any nearby places?
I'd skip Iowa. There's nothing in Iowa m8. Unless you have to go.

Personally, I'd add Madison to your Wisconsin trip or skip Milwaukee and just do Madison if you can't do both.

If youre a craft beer drinker Toppling Goliath (the second or arguably top brewery in the world) is in Iowa, and they are releasing KBBS (#2 on beer advocates best 250 beers in the world) in January. You have to win a lottery to be able to buy your 1 bottle limit. It costs like 20ish USD a bottle and it sells aftermarket for like 1200-1600 USD per bottle. But like I said, IF you are a craft beer drinker its like a pilgrimage to Mecca.

If overpriced breadwater isnt your thing though, >>1186802 is spot on, theres nothing else worth seeing or doing in Iowa.

I have a credit with Westjet of $600. I would like to go somewhere to do a lot of diving (snorkeling/scuba). Everyone I know goes to Mexico or Cuba, so I would like to avoid those and go somewhere a little less travelled. I don't care for night life or shopping. I would like somewhere that is good for photography as well as the diving. Where would you suggest?

I don't speak any other language than English unfortunately and I'm female, so somewhere safe and less chance of me getting zika.

I've looked on Lonely Planet and while I really want to have decent diving/snorkeling, I want to avoid the gaggles of tourists. Preferably, I'd love to book a room on a boat that will be at sea for a few days and dive each of those days.

I've no idea where to start, so any help would be much appreciated!

I've been diving in New Caledonia. It's good so long as you don't dive in touristy locations. Duck Island in Noumea is a place you shouldn't bother paying for SCUBA gear, snorkelling is good enough.
Diving around the light house is good if you're looking to see fish. Lot of cool stuff like Barracuda and Sharks.

There are wrecks you can see if you go further north because of the islands involvement in the Pacific campaign.

I have been happy diving in
- Fort Lauderdale FL
- Key Largo FL
- Bocas del Toro, Panama. Rather safe and as far as I know, Zika free.
I have heard great things about
- Roatan, Honduras. May not be safe as a lone female, and Zika.
- Thailand
- Cocos Island liveabord, Costa Rica
- El Gouna, Egypt. According to an Egyptian friend of mine it's a very safe area (basically a resort city), and it looks very cheap because people are scared of Egypt right now. Like, $75 a night at a 4-star hotel cheap.

Not worth the price imo. Don't know about western europe but I did eastern europe only using buses and saved alot of money. An interrail pass would have been over twice more expensive.
Sure trains are comfier but all the buses I went with had wifi, screens and lots of movies so it wasn't bad at all.
>>
>>1186632
This. We went the classic route of Prague > Vienna > Brati > Budapest > Zagreb etc just using buses and some trains (e.g. Budapest to Zagreb, that were never more than 20-30€ per journey) and spent far less than people we knew who had bought interrail tickets.
>>
>>1186632
>>1186633
I'll have to compare the prices to western europe then. How flexible were the buses, like how far in advance did you have to plan/buy the tickets?
I want to do a trip without much planning
