im flying to egypt over christmas any advice?

I've not been to Egypt in some time and even then it was only to sharm el sheikh, but if you're going alone, be wary of your possessions and be respectful to people you encounter. If you're traveling with people, then just make sure you guys know where you'll be. Create points to which you can find your way back to, and regroup, should you need it.
My family have told me of times that they'd been locked in shops, and were told to buy something before they could be let out. I doubt that will happen to you, but just be assertive if you need be.
The vast of majority of people you encounter will be friendly (not to mention the countless other tourists).

I didn't quite know what else to share with you, as really you'll get by on common sense and respectful behaviour alone, for the most part.

Yeah, don't do that.

Besides being shitty, Cairo was recently bombed. Egypt is rife with crime and scams. It will be virtually impossible to have a good time without a very trusted local guide.

I was recently in Egypt, Cairo and Sharm, pic related, nothing but pollution, poverty and political unrest.

Yeah, the political situation over there isn't exactly the best for traveling.

But to be going there anyway, you're probably going to have accepted there's at least a slim chance of being caught up in something undesirable.

This anon, OP, does raise a good point about poverty and pollution; you will encounter this a lot, and as I said in the first response, you may encounter people who get a bit too pushy about wanting money from you.

Really, just keep your wits about you but don't be too stuck up or tense and you'll have yourself a nice time.

Okay, here are some quickfire observations and tips:

>Women are a no-no
Just don't. Bring your own or forget about it. Make sure all female members of your party dress conservatively. Also you do the same. It will just be easier and you won't stand out as much. No 'public displays of affection' past hand-holding.

I had a Nigerian expat chick with me and we kinda got to hugging in a park. Morality police separated us. It wasn't ironical either.

Most of them start with "I don't want money". Expect to be overcharged, etc. Learn the currency and speaking of which

Egypt has 2 exchange rates for USD, one bank and one street. Street is way higher and if somebody offers you the bank rate they are probably just Egypting you. I'm no economist, but I was there in Oct and it was 9EGP to the USD, street 13EGP t o USD, now it's 18EGP to the USD in the bank. Shit's bonkers.
