Given a choice, would you rather go to The Netherlands or New Zealand?

The Netherlands has more interesting history, but New Zealand has FAR better nature and (generally speaking), weather.

I would choose New Zealand.
>>

Been to both and thought both were really worth visiting. I'd say NZ is a little more interesting but not by much. It really depends what you're looking for...

I kind of want to visit Iran.
Everyone i speak to tells me it's a bad idea, saying i will be beheaded, arrested as a spy or attacked in the street for being a westerner etc etc.
I find it hard to believe.
Whats the reality?

I would really like to visit Iran but if I do I get a travel ban to the US. Fucking unfair.
>>
>>1192375
Everybody you speak to is an idiot. The only risk you run is getting hit by a car. Iranians are among the friendliest people in the world. I've been to Iran and had the best time. I recommend everybody go.

I'm going there in April. I'm working in an american company so there is the possibility that I'm asked to fly to the US. Is there nothing I can do? get a new passport?

Hello, I don't come here often and I'm not a big traveller.

I live in Canada and fucking hate winter with a passion. However, my current job allows me to take 2-3 months of vacation during winter.

So my question is, which destination would you suggest that features pretty beaches and where I could spend 2-3 months with a budget of around 5000$ CDN

I'm thinking either Thailand or Phillipines, but then again I haven't travelled much.

PS: 34 y-o white male fluent in french, english and spanish.

thank you so much! and whatever you do, don't come to Montreal from mid january to end of february. -20C sucks

If you find a good deal maybe Chile Valparaiso would be doable. Not sure but it's summer there while it's winter in Canada.

Also Canadian. Any places in the USA or EU that are relatively cheap and have nice beaches?

I'm going on a SE Asia trip early next year and I am planning my itinerary now. Has anyone been to Myanmar recently? It really looks beautiful and (relatively) untouched but I haven't met anyone who has been. Would you recommend it?

I haven't been recently. Did about a decade ago when it first opened up.
It's definitely worth visiting, gorgeous country but fuck there's some ugly teeth there just be prepared for that
>>
>>1188287
Haha, I'll bear that in mind. Any places/tips you have to recommend in particular?

I'm looking at Yanong, Inle Lake, Bagan and Kalaw for now, which I know are the main spots but they all look pretty incredible.
>>
>>1188787
I'd go see the Golden Rock if you can, its quite beautiful particularly at night.

Is TEFL pretty much god's gift to new college graduates that want to graduate?

Get to go see a new country, work a piss easy job, save some money, backpack around for a year, and then rinse and repeat?

I mean, I'm seriously considering it.

My brother has been doing it for years in Thailand. I'm about to ship out myself in a month or two. It sounds absolutely amazing for someone who squandered their potential and who doesn't have many opportunities here.
>>
my local university offers TEFL as a graduate certificate. I don't get it. I don't have a bacc. degree, and its the only university within reasonable distance which offers those courses, so how bad are online classes? do you really learn as much being behind a computer screen as in front of people? or do you have to have skype/ webcam, microphone or something...

It's been my lifelong dream to see the Northern lights in person. Since it's all but sure you'll be able to see them I read you should have a plan B itinerary planned so I figured I'd visit Reykjavik. Thinking about going January 9th for 4 days.

Any of you /trv/lers been there? Is 4 days enough to see everything? I want to go on a boat excursion away from the city lights to go star-seeing and hopefully see the Northern lights, and also go whale-watching.

Any other recs? Tips? Tricks?

FACT. 90% of the things you want to do in Iceland requires you to visit during the summer months and have a rental car and $$$$$ or lucky spring and autumn weather on either side of summer (shoulder season).
The other 10% of things you can do the other 8 months of the year is restricted to the airport, the blue lagoon, and being within Reykjavik for restaurants and nightclub/bar life, plus $$$$ for any excursions you might take outside of the city.
>>
>>1196277
Is it really that dead in the winter? My primary goal is to see the Northern lights, anything else would be a nice bonus - including clubbing and excursions to the blue lagoon and stuff like that. I have no problem just wandering around in a different city however.
>>
>>1196283
The opera house season is in their winter. There are a couple music festivals/club events, but they also run up the hotel prices when they're on in Reykjavik. You can see the lights fainter in the city, and you could probably pay a travel company to get you out of the city 1-2 hours to see them better. I recommend Budir. And, if your request it, you can be on the 3rd floor and watch the Lights from your bed throughout the night. It's highly windy and bitter cold otherwise. http://www.iheartreykjavik.net/2013/10/hotel-budir-a-romantic-winter-getaway-in-west-iceland/

Pretty much people hunker down to their jobs in the winter, in the few cities, and I think the stats are like 75% of the whole country lives in Reykjavik now. The buses stop running outside of the city like end of August. The Edda hotels throughout the country then get converted back to boarding schools. campground and other properties close up, and no one drives the ring road without a snorkel on their 4WDs. I just haven't been lately to gauge how much the icelandair flights is bringing some newer tourism ideas to winter. But I do know wealthy tourists have no problem taking small flights or helicopters to and from sights where they want to be, since the driving stops. Could you handle the rental car from the airport to blue lagoon and then to reykjavik? Or would you have to pay for a taxi?

Didn't get to visit clubs while there but there's this neon lit minigolf club or whatever it is, somewhere close to the center, run by a really cool American dude. It's not too expensive and you can get beers in the deal. Hope he's still in business though.

Also the Captain Morgan bar-ship near one of the bridges is quite an nice place to visit and maybe meet drunk people.

If you don't mind I'll use this thread to post my conundrum. Next year I'll have the opportunity to study abroad for my masters. There were lots of cool destinations but I've eliminated most of them because of either language barriers (Budapest only offers courses in Hungarian) or too small for my tastes (Kaunas.)

Basically I'm completely 50/50 stuck between Prague and Warsaw.

I'm sure I'll have fun in either city but any input is greatly appreciated.

Hey /trv/
So, yesterday my friend convinced me to go to india on really short notice, as in we're going in february short.

I need help. We're going there with little money and only what we can carry. We'll hitchhike around the country and probably stay there for a few months.

So, my question woyld be whats the best way to make money/ survive while travelling in india.
Like i sing really well and she plays a bunch of instrument but is busking even an option over there? Knitting? Sewing? Dancing?
Are there safe haven for us like rainbow gatherings or "monasteries" if need be?
I survived guatemalan ice cream, freshly pressed fruit juice and just fruit from the trees without being sick. How sick im gonna get if i completely immerse myself?
Do i need a lisense to drive a bike? Is it a good idea to drive overthere? Not in the cities of course but everywhere else?

Sleeping in a hammock outside is what's gonna happen. How fucked am i?

I'll post more question eventually for sure but for now those are my concerns.

Hello! Anyone here been to Africa? What can you tell me about Uganda, Kenya, and Malawi? I will be flying into Nairobi in five months, and intend to volunteer in a hospital nearby for eight weeks. I'm white, female, and will be traveling alone, so I'm looking to find a hospital in a non-conflict area where at least some of the locals speak English and I can reasonably expect to be welcomed. Malawi is looking like the best option; I've heard that the locals are extremely generous and welcoming. Any info about the area would be useful.

I like the Air and Space museum.

I like the Udvar air and space out by Dulles airport and couple visit a couple more times, and used to live in D.C. But, the museum I can return to over and over is natural history. I just love the rocks and gems. Of course some of the cooler things I've seen over the years were in the temporary exhibits. One of my favorites was one I stumbled in on called the history of the piano "Piano 300" with musical scores from Mozart, Duke Ellington, and other greats, and I remembered being impressed by the crystals on Liberace's piano. A lot of great photography exhibits over the years. And the "Art of Video Games" was great at the National Portrait Gallery.

Best museums to recommend to tourists is the International Spy and Newseum. I also recommend the "Tour with Tea" that takes you to the top of the national cathedral bell tower at the end, which is the highest point in DC. The herb garden there is great as well.
>>
>>1195246
Excellent taste my friend. That one.
>>
So far I like the portrait gallery. The new African American Museum is pretty cool too. I live in DC at the moment so I plan to cross every Smithsonian off the list soon. My least favorite so far was the Postal museum, if you're not into stamp collecting, it won't be interesting to you.

American here, I've been to a few of the general european places like Italy, UK, France etc but I've been doing some reading lately and have become pretty interested in Scandinavia, more specifically Norway.

Anyone have any experiences, recommendations, etc.?

What do you like? Cities, nature? Be warned Norway is hideously expensive on a level you have not experienced before.
>>
>>1195129
Mostly cities, but enjoy a good outdoor experience too. I've heard it's expensive but is it that bad? Is it similar in the rest of Scandinavia?
>>
>>1195130
Norwegian here.
More expensive. Oslo is very expensive and not a great place to visit, get out of Oslo to the fjords or the mountains!

I'm planning a trip to Russia, which city would be better to stay in?

I see little reason not to visit both. Petersburg is much more beautiful on the surface, but with less history and a vaguely less Russian character--it was an early 18th-century planned city designed to emulate European capitals farther West. Moscow is uglier, bigger, and more sprawling, but also older and vaguely more Russian (although not as much as the cities of the Golden Ring, which are easier to reach from there than Petersburg). I also think that there's more going on culturally and artistically in Moscow. But it's a bit more expensive, too (both are expensive, but decent accommodation in Moscow is really extortionate).

I like Moscow better, personally, but think Petersburg may offer the short-term visitor a better experience--you have to dig a little deeper to get the best bits of Moscow.

Tough call, I guess.
>>
>>1194723
Well my plan is to have a 17 day trip, Starting in Lviv for 3 nights, kiev for 3 nights, and mInsk for 1 night, that leaves me 10 days, I will definitely visit both cities, but I'm trying to decide on which one to main out of.

And that's where Moscow draws me in, is that it is apart of the Golden Ring, so Vladimir and those other places would only be a quickish train ride away

Most people i've talked to all said Moscow, so thats probably what i'll do
>>
>>1194849
>Vladimir
Honestly, Suzdal is much more comfy, has nearly zero commieblocks and has better tourist infrastructure. The main problem is the transport, the only available public transportation is old soviet bus from Vladimir. Also, prices are high and hotels may be fully reserved for New Year holidays period.

Overall, I'd say that Moscow and surrounding area is more about traditional Russia, while St.Pete is palaces and shiet

I have no idea on which board I should start this thread, but I guess you guys will be the most erudite on the topic.

So if I were to move somewhere really isolated, somewhere where the snow never melts, but I don't die of starvation - where should I go?
I was thinking Bouvetoya or Heard Island - but all these bloody places are some kinds of a natural preserve, so building a nuclear shelter/bunker is big nono.
Is there any similar place, where I can build a comfy cozy underground basement, fish for living and just generally chill in the harsh cold winter, looking out to the waves, without any people for hundreds of miles to all directions or having to worry that anyone will distub my peace for months or even years to come?

But they probably won't let me live there, I think nowadays it's close to impossible for white Europeans to immigrate to the US. Also not isolated - it's attached to a continent with millions of people on it and I'm sure there isn't a place in Alaska that's really remote without a single person in sight for hunderds and hundreds of miles.
