Hey guys, so I'm from middle europe but I don't want to stay here forever. I have a vitamin d deficiency and the winters are just to long for me so I may want to leave this cold place after completing my studies. I'm getting a bachelor's (=undergratuate) dregee in Corporate Communication.

So until I find a place to stay, do you think I could earn enough money through the internet to fund my travels (mosly southeast asia)?
i.e. be a freelance copywriter or something similar?
Has anyone here done this before?

tl;dr: I want to make money laying on the beach with suit and laptop like pic related

What are your essential travel accessories?

I just got a power bank because many people on here have suggested having one in order to charge electronics, so more tips would be nice.

an unlocked gsm cell phone

Need more info on where youre going, how long, etc.

Having a power adapter + plug adapters is mandatory, powerbank was a lifesaver for me so def a good choice there. Always pack a towel, trust me. Flip flops are highly recomended but i didnt have them for majority of my trip since i lost mine. Honestly i cant think of anything else that is essential..

I did enjoy having a cheap ~$10 bluetooth speaker with me. Playing music off my phone while biking around amsterdam or hiking in ireland with other travelers l just met made me the fucking man for having it, everyone likes sharing music.

Keep a roll of toliet paper in your daypack. You never know when you might need it. Luckily i never took a shit where i needed it but i did use it to blow my nose and clean my ears with all the time. I had a bird shit on my face and chest iin a park also one day which fucking sucked but luckily i had the TP so i was able to have a buddy clean me up, i would have had to walk like a mile to the hostel covered in it if i didnt have it.

A lighter is always good to have, also serves as a bottle opener if its a bic and you know how to use it. A regular bottle opener was great to have as well.

Forgot to nab a travel spork and REALLY regretted not having it. Id have myself a little picnic somedays with food from a grocery store and not having any eating utensils somewhat limits your options.

DEFINITELY bring a lock for your bag, and an extra just in case. I also brought a little cable lock (like one for bikes but more like a wire than a cable) which i used when a hostel didnt have good lockers - bag locked shut and locked down to a piece of sturdy furniture meant my bag wouldnt be stolen, at least not before someone elses since mine wasnt the low hanging fruit of the bunch.

Bring a good book, but one you are willing to leave behind. Once you read it youll want another and fuck carrying a book you read already.

I plan to go to japan and work there for a few months. I'm doing this because I grew up on anime. I've spent all my teen years escaping into slice of life anime and now that I'm out of highschool I kinda miss it. No I'm not a weeb, but fuck I miss it. I'm 18 therefore can't go to highschool :(. So I was thinking of teaching english there. I'll save up £10 000 in the mean time. I have no job.

Can you guys give me step by step guide?

yeah mate, don't fucking do it, Japan fucking sucks, especially teaching there

Also if you do not know any Japanese, you will have a hard as fuck time, i've been to japan prolly 3 or 4 times and it is not the anime Japan you seek

Trust me on this one, do not fucking do it if you are poor, it's a terrible place to be poor in with no friends on connections

Also teaching English to Japanese students isn't like British students, they are almost too fucking serious about their schoolwork

If you do go, go serious and prepared to work your fucking ass off, and if you have no previous teaching experience, Godspeed because you sure as hell will not be teaching English in Tokyo or a bigger city
>>
>>1188459
Also do you realize why anime was made? it's to disract you from reality, Japanese schools probably have little to nothing of Slice of Life shit

Sorry to Crush your weeb fantasies but from your post you are fucking oblivious to what real Japan is

How much do I need to travel around the world?
If I save up £10 000, is that enough to live around the world for at least a year? I just turned 18. Before I start wage cuckery, I want to travel the world and get some life experience. I don't want memery either, I'd work on farms and shit but the £10 000 would just for me to get there and if I ever run into trouble and want to get out I'd be able to afford a ticket home. I have 2 years of college paid for but Idk if I should go. I don't really want to go because there's no point. I'm currently studying to be a mechanic for the next 6 months. Then after that I plan to leave after summer 2017.

I plan to do Wwoof (volenteer on a farm in some country, and in exchange for work you get shelter and food.). I'd blog about it so that when I return I'd have something on my CV so it would be easier to get a minimum wage job.

I'm gonna learn app development, web development, game development in my own time so I freelance and get some passive income.

How doable is it?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
10,000 quid for one year? It's doable with a little budgeting and a lot of wwoofing. I don't think you'd even need to work unless you want a buffer for when you return home.
Say you visit 12 countries in 12 months, average price of a one-way ticket these days is ~£300-£400, that leaves you around £500/month to live on. Easy enough in countries like Thailand and Morocco, but an obstacle for countries like NZ and Aus which won't allow you in unless you can prove you have enough to stay off the streets.
>>
you can get work visas in canada, australia, new zealand

you're a lot better off getting actual jobs in these countries than just woofing, traveling between countries costs money, and to get work visas you have to show proof of funds that you can go back instead of get deported

if you get a tefl you can get accommodation by volunteering at a language school in some countries

I really doubt you'll be able to monetize any sort of computer skill you don't have yet in the next 18 months

don't need to do it all at once, could go to canada for six months, than at a later time go to Australia
>>
>>1188417
I could wwoof all around the world couldn't I? I'd live below my means so all I would need is tickets. I'd need a laptop also and internet to keep my skills in shape.

I will be in Shanghai for 3 weeks this winter to practice the language and learn about the culture, and plan to stay in hostels. I am currently about HSK 4/5 or so and can converse somewhat and read many characters.

The plane tickets are bought, I have a visa/passport, and have yet to get immunizations. All that's left to find is stuff to do.

Has anyone been to Shanghai before and know of some fun stuff to do over this three-week stretch?

if you are into art stuff go visit long museum and the west bund

I lived just outside Shanghai for almost 4 years. I hated that city. What a polluted mess. But to be fair I didn't spend too much time in it.

I'm going to be traveling outside the city a bit, so please let me know if there's any interesting spots near where you lived

Alright lads. I'm off to fucking Norway in August next year. Give me some ideas to do while I'm there for three weeks. Sorta planned to hop in and out of coastal and inland towns and go back to Oslo at the end to get home. I've got like 5k AUD to spend. I don't want tours or group bullshit, I want some solo/another person adventures.

>>
5k AUD nigga you might as well sleep in 5 star hostels there
Hostels cost 20eur, you meet new people and stuff
>>
>>1188142
I won't be spending all that, thats just how much i'll have by that time at the rate I'm saving. I don't want to be a backpacker essentially, I wanna be in half decent places other than Hostels. But its good knowing my money won't be short.

Make sure you get yourself a Canadian national park pass if you are planning to visit Canada in 2017.

Right now they are free through a government site:
http://www.commandesparcs-parksorders.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=53407&categoryId=216870&productId=524527&errorViewName=ProductDisplayErrorView&urlLangId=-1&langId=-1&top_category=216870&parent_category_rn=216870&storeId=22953

what is this park pass deal?
>>
>>1188425
>what is this park pass deal?
for canada's 150 anniversary there's a collector free parks pass

it's kind of misleading, parks are usually cheap ($5) or free to enter, but then parking and tent fees cost more

you don't need the pass ether, the fees are waived because it's 2017

I find it odd how many people come to Canada to see the stupid cities that other than 3-4 aren't any different than any other ones, and not see any nature but on the plane
>>
In america you can camp for free in most parks if you stay out of the improved campgrounds.
Is this true in canada as well?
I hope to drive my van up there this summer and cruise around enjoying the exchange rate.

I want to study abroad in an East Asian metropolis for the waifus and cyberpunk vibes. Only requirement is I must be able to take engineering classes in English and not it can't cost much more than US tuition at a state school (~7k USD/semester)

So far I've looked at Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.

Where should I go?

Heading to New Zealand next winter for a few days in the snow then road tripping around the south island, 2 weeks total. Flying in to Christchurch.

Where would you recommend for skiing/boarding? I'm around low intermediate level and I'll be with mostly beginners (but will be fucking them off after the first day for more of a challenge)

And any other recommendations of must see things would be appreciated!

Christchurch Local here!

Are you basing yourself in Christchurch while you are boarding? I would recommend Mt Hutt Skifield as it is within driving distance of the city (a couple of hours each way)
Make sure you visit lake tekapo in winter, it is a dark sky reserve so the stars are fantastic.Check out the west coast of the island, lots of native bush and awesome views, see the glaciers in franz josef, and the Nelson/Malborough region is beautiful as well. let me know if you have any more questions!
>>
I would recommend either heading down through the high country in the centre of the island to Queenstown and back up the west coast, or vice versa. The Canterbury plains and the coastal road south to Dunedin are fairly boring, just a lot of farmland and small towns.
>>
>>1187920
If you go to Queenstown make sure you get a Fergburger.

Credit Cards, let's talk about 'em.

What do you guys use if any?

I just got a statefarm one because they're my bank and car insurance. Pretty great insurance and all, but I feel like I could be racking up miles. Any recommendations? I have 700+ credit rating and good credit history for a 25 year old.

>>
I'm reading up on the Gold Delta Skymiles card. 30,000 bonus miles if you spend at least $1,000 within the first three months sounds too good to be true for a free first year and $95 annual fee after.

You pay a fee with every purchased with these CC, right?
>>
>>1187893
airmiles and miles traveled for a ticket aren't 1:1 right? There must be some bullshit.
>>
>>1187893
I have that card and the platinum business. It's legit. Not a fee per transaction. If you don't fly often or far it just gets harder to accumulate miles from just cc spending

In Sweden there's a famous log ride down white rapids.
>Firstly you get on this huge dark log about 6 foot long
>grip it tight between your legs
>as you begin to feel the log buck as you ride over wave after wave of whiteness, coinfish will literally jump out of the water into your lap, these fish can be dried and used as legal tender- that's right free money!
>when you get to the end of the river ride exhausted and covered in sweat, you exit at the resort known as Mamlo where for braving the waters the government gives you free accommodations for the duration of your stay

>cost of living

pretty cheap compared to most metro areas, especially if you don't mind the living in the outskirts

>things to do

I don't go out much but 6th street and south congress is where all the fun happens from what I understand. and of course tons of yearly shit like SXSW and ACL if you're into that stuff

>weather

mostly warm year around, gets pretty hot in summer. lots of rain this year

>crime

going down due to all the gentrification
but crime rate has never been that bad here to begin with

>rent
see 1

>food
food trucks are a big thing here
lots of bbq places as well
>>
stay the fuck out we're full

>cost of living
property taxes are $11,000 a year here because of people moving in and hyping the city up causing trouble to us natives

>things to do
camping in mckenny park, adventuring in the greenbelt, playing a few arcade games at the arcade ufo. some pretty cool stuff desu. theres lots more to do than that too if you wanna visit we have hotel space just don't move here.

>weather
hot 100.00% of the time

>crime
just carry a knife because some faggot ass kids or a ghetto ass nigger might pull some sketchy shit

>rent
expensive

>food
magnolia, maudies, torchys, salt lick, county line, thunderclouds, lots of good stuff.

The south is crawling with mexicans now, and has always had a billion black people. you're not going to have a problem unless you to a biker bar or a kkk rally or some shit. It's not 1955 amigo.

I have the option of doing a stopover in Los Angeles next week (land on Thursday afternoon, leave on Saturday afternoon), but I am not sure if so little time is actually worth it. But then on the other hand, I'd like to complete San Andreas, and Los Santos is the only city I'm still missing.
What I am especially worried, is getting around, since that city is fuckin huge, but seemingly has the public transport infrastructure of a small european village.
also, I am not too sure about what I'd even do there, apart from wandering around to see a bit of hollywood and downtown.
From what I have seen on wikivoyage, I'm interested in The walk of fame and rodeo drive (because, why not?), Getty Center, MOCA, California Science Center and Venice beach. How much of that would be possible in a day?

I'd personally save my money. Not much to do think time of year. Save money for wherever you are headed to.
>>
>>1187467
Money isnt really an issue (as long as we are talking about reasonable amounts), but $500 totally wasted for nothing, I must not do, but spending the amount for something >meh tier would be OK for me.
>>
People say LA doesn't have a public transportation infrastructure because it's more bus-based than subway based and New Yorkers hate taking the bus. Don't fall for the meme.

It would be pretty difficult to do all of what you mentioned in a day, at least because of the sheer transportation times. I would limit it to the west side - maybe start at Walk of Fame and move to Rodeo Drive. Knock out MOCA and CSS, you can do Getty Center and Venice beach or instead just Getty Villa (my personal favorite LA museum). and a Malibu beach, which I won't help you with because it's in my best interest to keep my favorites to myself.
