*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.
Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥
Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

We should put that up with the general thread information
Thinking about hitting up DisneySea. Has anyone been there? Would you recommend it?
Otherwise I've also been thinking of going to Universal Studios Japan.
I can't seem to make up my mind.
I actually have passed to both parks in California but I thought it would be interesting to visit
How expensive is it to rent a car for a day? I'm staying in Tokyo but I want to go visit the lakes around Fuji.
Being that the buses in the area stop at 5PM, I was told it's easier to drive.
I am getting an International Driver Licenses but I have no idea for the daily rate is for renting vehicles.
Any tips for someone moving to Northern Ireland? Im moving in with a friend and probably will get shitty job to support my hobbies at least for a while. What are some jobs anyone could get into? Also whats best beer and national food I should try? I'll probably do some sightseeing too. I'll be living somewhere between dublin and belfast.
>>1190154
Tips - firstly stay away from politics and religion the troubles are still close to the surface. Secondly decide which country you are asking about. Dublin is in the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and uses Euros. While Belfast is in Northern Ireland and uses UK pounds.
>>1190187
Oh I will never dwelve into politics and religion of another coutry.
Okay, checked the city Ill be living in, Northern Ireland it is, but if I can Illbe traveling all around.
>>1190189
You don't need to delve, the place is still pretty much segregated on a street by street, community by community, pub by pub basis. Being aware and staying out of trouble is a good idea. Travelling is easy, obviously you will need a passport but the border is easy to cross and mostly has no controls on it.
As well as the currecy difference North speed limits are in MPH while Irish speed limits are in km per hour. Both drive on the left though.
Westchester anon here, i want to visit NYC for a day or two before Christmas any tips on where to get an airbnb while im there? Ive been to Manhattan/central park/chinatown plenty of times but i would like to see the rest of the city
Brooklyn is only a little bit worth going to and the rest of the boroughs are not worth it. For Christmas time I would honestly recommend Midtown or UES. If you're looking for those comfy vibes don't go south of Washington Square Park
>>1190064
Wheres a decent place to airbnb for a night or two? Im obviously not gonna stay in midtown Manhattan

Hello! First time posting here. I would like to get some opinions from travelers. I have had a severe case of wanderlust for a few years now. I am at a very flexible point in my life, and I would like some advice on which direction to take. I’ll try to be straight and to the point, it’s going to be long anyways though. HERE GOES
>23 year old living in US
>college dropout (could probably get an associates, maybe a bachelors, in SOMETHING relatively easily with my 2.5 yrs. of credits) I also have a class A CDL
>halfway decent in speaking Spanish, I could re-learn fairly quickly
>single, no children
>working a shit job (previous employment isn’t too impressive, mainly warehouse work)
>I have two classic cars for sale, after they sell and I repay a debt, I’ll probably have ~$5,000 to play with
>I have an RV (pic related)
After I quit school (didn’t know what I wanted to study, didn’t want to get into debt without direction) I decided that I was at a good point in my life to travel. At first I decided that making a campervan was my way to go. Then, two vans later, I decided a small RV was the way to go. (Can’t really shit and shower in a van). I wanted to travel the US independently in an RV. I got my RV about 7 months ago, and have had a decent amount of mechanical work done on it. It is still a project though, and needs much more before I’d be content with putting it to the test. This will cost $money$, I’d like a 500watt+ solar setup, new carb, etc. It will be a mobile apartment when I’m done with it.
I’m sparing details, but hopefully that is clear. I have a project RV, I will soon have enough $ to make it quite the vessel. It will take time though, and I’m kind of unhappy with my life, and pursuing the RV will prolong my unhappiness. Might be worth it afterwards, though.
(see next comment)
I have also had another idea lurking in my mind for a while. Getting a TEFL cert and using that as a basic means of travel. If I were to do this, I think I would like to go to South America or Spain. (and I would learn Spanish for obvious reasons.) There’s a TEFL course taught at a university about ~35 mins from me. The cost is $1,100:
https://www.oxfordseminars.com/tesol-tesl-tefl-course/details/
So I’m kind of at an impasse. I’ve been toying with the van/RV idea for a while, and haven’t made too much progress. It’s something I definitely want to continue to pursue, but is that my best travel option NOW? The RV will eat a lot of money and will take a lot of time. I’m kind of tired of “wasting” my time pursuing this. Trying to fix up the RV has held my life back in a way. I’m definitely not living my life to the fullest, and it really sucks because I’m young and I have minimal responsibilities.
tldr; RV for U.S. travel or TEFL & go abroad?

Have you ever been to the Smoky Mountains? Was it worth it?
Is it safe to go in winter?
nice scenery, unless you're into nature might be a bit boring
what do you mean by safe?
road conditions? locals?
>>1189951
Road conditions and weather, mostly.
Been to Gatlinberg many times before. Cool little tourist town, was a great place to go as a kid.
Mountains are neat as well, although a large chunk of the Smokies/ Gatlinberg did just get burnt to a crisp by wildfires.
Ask a 19 year old female who traveled to Seoul, Bangkok, Siem Reap, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Bruges, Prague, Budapest, Krakow, Milan, Rome, Barcelona, Cardiff, anything (travel related). No shitposting pls.
Backstory: I flew from the states to Korea to visit some family this June. Then I just had this strong desire to go somewhere alone. My grandparents were very worried, because then I was still 18 and they tend to be overprotective. I just booked a flight to Bangkok for a week, but what was supposed to be a week turned into 2, and I met great people in a hostel who convinced me to come to Cambodia with them. Best decision of my life.
I then came home, worked my ass off for a month, saved enough money to go interrailing in Europe. I go back home next week.
How many different people did you have sex with while travelling? Not shitposting here, genuinely wondering.
how did you feel about bruge? I'm going to visit Ghent some time in the next couple of months and was thinking about taking a day trip to bruge, worth it or nah?
>>1189911
Have you 'found yourself'?
Do you ever feel slightly creepy when you're going to certain places alone while solo traveling?
Unless it's places like bars, clubs, etc where you can easily find a group to join I can't think of any place where it wouldn't be normal to be at alone, so no
>>1189835
Interesting, must be just me then. I've gone to castles and museums and other similar places alone and sometimes felt creepy since I was some random lone 20-something surrounded by a bunch of families.
>>1189835
>where you can easily find a group
really? In a bar?
Have any of you guys gone travelling with no money? Is it possible to find cash in hand jobs quickly? I would love to hear stories and travelling tips.
Bumping because I'm a 19 yr old student with no money who wants to travel
/trv/ is a slow board. One bump per 24 hours is enough.
>there will never be new episodes of Farscape ever again
>you will never vicariously travel to Nigel's home planet on board of a Leviathan
Im in Hong Kong Guys what should i do
>>1189650
Plan your trip out of there?
>>1189650
Whores
>>1189650
Lets chill, I m native fluent, also here vacation. Wechat :parasanmike
Aisle or window?
Window because you can almost sorta sleep against it if you really try. In the aisle you're fucked.
>>1189609
short haul, 6 hours or less, window. Long haul I like aisle so I can go piss as much as I want without bothering people
>>1189620
I'm exactly the opposite. I tried long haul aisle once and it was a goddamn torture when it came to trying to sleep. It's nice to have the window to lean against.
I'm going to be doing some backpacking and rockclimbing around SEA in January. I'm thinking about bringing my hammock and tarp to do some /out/ing.
Is it possible to do solo hikes? If so any recommendations?
I plan on visiting every country in the SEA
>>1189394
Mind where you hike in countries with a land-mine problem.
Also,
>sneks.
>>1189540
Oh no not sneks!
Guess there are no trails or national parks then huh?
Been doing my research. Looks like there ain't any "real" hikes. Could be wrong. Must continue to do so. Might just bring my hammock and drop the tarp.
Christmastime in London with qt3.14 for a week. Staying in Kensington. Got good seats to the Royal Ballet. Got the free larger museums covered (will probably do just two or three as they seem to be massive and concentrated). What more to do?
Tell Pakis and Polskis to fuck off

Thank you for your insight!
-Go ice skating outside the Natural history museum
- If you're near south ken go to The Queen's Arms pub near imperial college, there's nothing special about but it's cozy and worth getting a quiet drink at.
- Notting Hill is ok
- Walk around the areas of Southbank, Temple Gardens, Holland park, Hyde park, regent's park.
- Go to the BFI and/or see something interesting at the Curzon Cinema.
- There's a really nice ice cream place inside the covent garden thing.
-Take a stroll through Canary Wharf.
There's nothing too special about what I've just listed but I'm a bit of a snob and do all of the above myself far too regularly. But the sights and atmospheres all bode well for chill romantic xmas times.
I think I'm gonna cross the border and go to Turin with my boyfriend for NYE.
Any suggestions on what too see/do?
Thanks in advance!
Any advice at all?
My first and last bump
The National museum of cinema is totally worth-it if you are at all interested in films. Then maybe the cathedral with the claimed towel that Jesus was buried in, don't remember it's name. You'll find interesting stuff by just walking in different areas. Food is great everywhere, don't be afraid to choose places randomly, especially go eat outside the center as it's obviously cheaper.
>>1190663
Thanks!
Tell me about the safety of some polarizing parts of the world /trv/. Share personal experiences if you want. I want to go to these places but haven't because of bad safety reps. The unsafest places I've been to thus far have been Brazil, Israel and Palestine and I never had any problems there because (not-so-humblebrag) I got pretty good street smarts. On my list is:
>Lebanon
>Egypt
>Turkey
>Algeria
>Libya
>Colombia
>Mexico
>Serbia
>West China
>>1189175
I only have experience in Colombia and Mexico, and I say there's no reason to avoid those two countries. Just do your research on which regions you best avoid. There's some in the south of Colombia that can be a bit dangerous, as well as some Mexican states like Guerrero and Tamaulipas.
Pic related is the safety advice the Dutch government gives. I think they highly exaggerate Colombia.
I can't think of any reason why you should be afraid of Serbia. Stay the fuck away from Libya though.
There are many countries in the world that have an undeserved bad rep, or a greatly exaggerated one. Countries like Iran and North Korea for example are perfectly safe to visit.
>>1189175
Lebanon is safe. This thread was recently archived, and I talk a lot about safety there: >>1183072
I haven't been to the rest on your list, but here's my advice anyway:
>Egypt
Tourist places are safe.
>Turkey
Anything that's not Kurdistan is safe.
>Algeria
Safe, even in the south, according to friend who lived there.
>Libya
NOT safe! Better than it used to be, and not impossible to travel to, but there's still a war there with two rivalling governments. Only go if you know exactly what the fuck you are doing.
>Serbia
The safest country on your list, by far.
>West China
Safe. There are clashes from time to time, but they're few and far between, in a region that's already massive. And also directed at the government, not at tourists.
Colombia and Mexico I know nothing about.
>>1189208
This looks like the most reasonable government-issued safety map.
I will be travelling to do a project in Semarang for a week and i'll be getting a scholarship for it. Since I'm there, I would like to see a bit more of Indonesia, so I thought about travelling central and eastern Java to Bali and fly back.
My question is about getting to bali. Trains/busses go through the bigger cities, but I'd rather see temples/rice paddies and shit along the way. How would I do this? Buy a motorbike?
And what are some places in Bali that are not just drunk aussies?
1.) Unless you have some very particular and weird reason, stay away from Surabaya. It's shit.
2.) Rather than keeping to the coast, stray inland towards the volcanos and places like Bromo (Cemoro Lawang is just the qtest village) when in west Java.
3.)Stay away fron Denpasar, it's drunk aussie central. I don't know how south-east Bali is, but the north-east and central mountain regions are pretty cool.
4.) Buying a motorbike is a neat idea, but only do so if you're at least somewhat experienced, the traffic is slightly chaotic and some roads are pretty fucked. DO NOT BUY A VESPA FOR A 700km RIDE, YOUR BALLS AND ASS WILL FALL OFF.
Anyway, depending on your itinerary, your best bet is to travel by train/bus/hitchiking on Java, get to the outskirts of Denpasar, then rent a vespa there for a few days and travel Bali.
The rice terraces are the prettiest north of Ubud and west of the crowded jatiluwih, near the Pura Luhur Batukaru temple imo.
Lombok is less of a tourist attraction than Bali from what I've heard, so it would be a good place to visit.
Also, keep in mind that you can get Dengue fever, so try to take precautions.
>>1189226
Thanks, will probably take busses/trains and do day trips then. Any more places you thought were memorable?
