Hey all,
I'm going to Mexico, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and a handful of other places from June through January. I've decided to see another country at the beginning of May, after my semester finishes and I'll have fewer hours at work.
I want to go somewhere which is economical to visit and can be done on a budget. Peru and Ecuador both have fairly cheap fares from Detroit, ranging between $350 and $500.
Does anyone have a recommendation on which to chose? I know they're both inexpensive destinations but otherwise I'm drawing a big blank.
Anyone been to one or the other or both? Just looking for some simple opinions to help me make up my mind. Will post my ticket on Friday or Saturday after I decide.
Probably going from about May 6th through the 20th, working for a month, and then embarking on my other trip on June 26th.
Peru is all about Cusco and the incan ruins, the other stuff is mostly underwhelming. You can get laid super easily by 6's in Lima, that's the only other redeeming thing about Peru IMO.
Ecuador is less touristy and travelling there is more about the outdoors - volcano hikes, etc etc etc. Cooler backpacker culture from what I've heard. You won't find local girls that are fuckable and easy.
Hey OP, i've been to both Peru and Ecuador. I spent a month and a half in Peru and about 3 weeks in Ecuador and i think it just depends on what you want to do there. Peru is much more touristy so if you're into that and big cities like Lima or Cusco then go for it, but outside Cusco/Lima there isnt anything to do unless you're in the rainforest. In Peru i stayed in a rainforest camp in Puerto Maldonado for a month, then i travelled all the way through peru by bus visited all the big cities and did touristy things then into Ecuador. Ecuador is much more relaxed and honestly the people are a lot nicer and you wont be ripped off. I'd recommend it if you're more into action/adventure sports and trekking you'll have a much better time there. Check out Banõs, It's a city in the middle of ecuador that has a lot of action adventure stuff, skydiving, bungee jumping, canyoning and it's really cheap, the locals are lovely and honestly i just think Ecuador is so underrated and there is so much to do! Hope this helps! :)

Seems like a wash! I'm into cities and nature. Can you give me an idea of how much some outdoors activities cost, as well as how the two countries compare in day-to-day prices?
I think I'm probably going to go to whichever country has a cheaper fare. I have $90 in JetBlue credit and they go to Ecuador for about $200 less than Peru.

That's interesting. I doubt it can be that hard to get laid in Ecuador. However, sex isn't really a big consideration for me. I'll be traveling from June through January anyway.
I like that Ecuador at least sounds more relaxed. This is basically going to be my "summer is here, no classes, and I can work only 20 hours per week until I leave in June" trip.
Let's talk computing devices. What do you bring with you when you travel? Phone, tablet, laptop, or some combination? Why? What are some good features for a traveler?
Phone and my trusty Samsung Notebook 7 (one of those tablet-plus-keyboard "laptops"). I used to have another laptop, but it was clunky.
This one is smaller but just as useful when I'm working on the road.

I have taken many trips that were tacked onto the tail ends of business trips. In these cases I've had pretty much everything (laptop, smartphone, tablet, also sometimes even a DSLR and an extra lens--I'm not a super-serious photographer but I'm a hobbyist). It's a lot to lug around, and for most people in most cases, it'd be total overkill.
The only reason I would bring a laptop would be if I were planning to do some work, or maaaaybe photo editing with the DSLR (on very quick trips, or trips to less photogenic destinations I won't even bring the camera, and will make do with phone snapshots). I always bring the phone, which is fine for 99% of my online communications/data needs (I also use it to... wait for it... make phone calls), and is probably all the electronics most people need. But I do almost always also bring my tablet, which I like better than the phone for e-books or videos, despite some redundancy. And for some reason, I've noticed that my phone (an Android device) and iPad each sometimes work better with various WiFi networks. So I won't be able to do anything online with my phone in some hotel lobby, but the iPad will work, or vice versa.
On my last trip, the only electronics I brought were my smartphone and a camera.
The camera sucked ass and actually took worse photos than my phone.
On my next trip, I plan on bringing a better camera. Dare I say it, a Sony A6000/A6300? I realize that this camera has become a meme with travelers & people new to photography, but I can't find anything wrong with it.
I dream about it, anons
>apply for job as emt at mcmurdo station, not expecting to get it

turned it down, never a second of regret since. fuck being cold for 6 months

When I was in Usuhaia they offered trips for $5,000 starting. All the extra activities were crazy expensive though, like $750 for kayaking or skiing. Personally I'm more interested in seeing the Falklands, South Georgia and Shetland Islands. Would love to see Elephant Island. The Shackelton expedition runs $12,000.
>>1228479
wtf dude you should've gone, not many people get opportunities like that
Has any airline given you a hard time about carry ons not being correct size or weight if you're backpacking? Obviously, I'm not trying to bring crazy stuff with me but one of my airlines says 15lbs as the limit and I'm at 22lbs and am wondering how screwed I am.
>>1228342
They might just charge you to check it in.
Now do you pack 22lbs? 3 shirts, 1-2 pairs of pants, a hairbrush, toothbrush, small towel, and maybe an extra pair of very light shoes is all you need to travel with.
Damn 15 lbs is harsh. Air France only allowed 26 lbs and I thought that was bad. Sometimes they are pretty strict because in Paris they actually made me weigh my bag before I could even go through security.
Only US airlines (I've heard European airlines are the same though).
Asian, African, Latin American airlines don't seem to give a shit.
Is Airbnb something where the people you stay with chill with you and introduce you to the city, or is it just a low budget option for a place to sleep?
>>1227791
Shit, don't know why the image came out sideways, sorry about that
It could be both, but usually the host will tell you whats cool to do or eat etc..
Maybe sex happens,,,partyn,,,eattin
>>1227791
Depends on the host, I've had people give me free uber coupons and such, had others party and chill.
Read the description of the place you are staying and use the reviews to back it up.
Most hosts are usually completely chill so long as you aren't a dick
Hallo, My gf and Me are going on a Journey through australia (about 6-8 months). We wanted to Start in Darwin, buy a car there and make our way through the country.
What do you think of Darwin? Good or Not too good Start for Backpacker. We are 22/20 and Start in october/November
Pic unrelated sorry
>>1227783
Darwin is extremely hot all the time pretty much but especially december. there isn't a wrong place to start in Australia really.
Strayan here, Darwin's got a bit of a bad rep but take that with a grain of salt because I've never been there. A good car will run you minimum $4000 AUD so be prepared for that. I'd recommend going south from Darwin through Queensland to Brisbane/Gold Coast, staying in Byron Bay for a while (it's mint during the summer) and then going down to Sydney/Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road is meant to be amazing.
>>1227814
Also, I'd highly recommend a Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore sedan/wagon because there's millions of them in this country so they're cheap as chips to get repaired.
So how will traveling in 100 years look like /trv/? We will be able to travel to the moon? Or the bottom of the Mariana trench?
Provided the next 80 years see a continuous peace in the Western world and no major crisis

Nothing but a pipe dream. Space guns are the future.
>>1227758
100 years huh? Maybe by then, people will get Total Recall style memories of vacations implanted into their minds, at a fraction of the cost of real traveling. Then the "real traveler" meme will finally become literal.
I am going to try and take off tomorrow for a few days. I am thinking Guatemala because it is one of three Central American Countries I have not visited yet. I only have a three or four days I can be gone. The USD goes far. I am going to some standard research tonight, I know last minute, but thought I would throw up a thread to see if anyone had any suggestions or opinions. I have some money to spend so I can book a tour or do an activity.
Guatemalan anon here
Most visited places:
Antigua Guatemala, Tikal, Atitlan lake (Panajachel), Quetzaltenango, Semuc Champey, Lanquin
>>1227254
Another guatemalan anon here.
If you stay in the city I recommend a place called cayala, you can do some canopy there, there are plenty of restaurants and it is a very safe place. The national palace is nice too.
Antigua is a beautiful place(in my opinion) and has a decent nightlife. I think you can ask for tours to climb a volcano there, never done it but have been told it is worth it.
Peten is a most in my opinion. Those pyramids and ruins are underrated.
Panajachel has decent nightlife too.
>>1227254
Married a Guatemalan here, been many times during different seasons. As you know, now is good, no rainy season.
Bump for Semuc Champey, great water, nice lodging, cave exploring, I think a Japanese traveller drowned there, be careful.
I like Antigua, touristy, but nice to look around, I hear the hike to the volcano is exhausting and is serious. We did hike one volcano, Pacaya, I believe it recently erupted when we went and covered the city in ash, so the hike was somewhat barren and hot(sunny). I'm sure it'd be real nice now. At the bottom, a guy sold some alcoholic booze that was fruity and very tasty, pic related.
Tikal was pretty cool, shitty how fucking locals can't keep from tagging their own shit. You'll probably have to stay in Peten nearby to visit. Good nightlife on the weekends.
I saw Atitlan as a smaller Antigua on a lake, I'd rather do Antigua, but if you like traveling on small boats, go for it. The capital can be a bit dangerous, watch for scum on motor bikes, they'll rob you right from your vehicle. I really like the central market in the city, sorry, don't know the name or directions. A bit touristy, but interesting stuff to see, love the food there.
>buy shipping container
>furnish as efficiency apartment
>drop it somewhere nobody cares where it would appear to fit in
>decorate surroundings with appropriate objects in order to disuade curiosity & foot-trafic
NYC is riddled with suitable nooks & crannies -- under bridges, burned-down lots, forgotten alleys, broken sidestreets -- many of which appear to be under perpetual construction, their perimeters defined by caution tape, water barrels, cones, signs, plywood, fencing, etc, etc....
Placed in the right location with proper camouflage, I think I could get away with rent-free living thusly for years.
What do you think?
>>1227047
Sounds great until
>You need to take a dump
>want reliable electricity
>want HVAC
>when someone figures out what you are doing they could literally ship your house away
>need proper residence for job
Why not just go live in a fucking trailerpark like normal poor people?
>>1227048
>when someone figures out what you are doing they could literally ship your house away
you know, this could be actually desirable... Fuck, you could even *pay* in order to move your house to another country every couple of years
OP, the idea's pretty good
>>1227048
>normal
I am taking a short trip to Cartagena, Colombia. I need help with:
-Easily finding cocaine
-Easily finding hookers
Any tips?
People will literally come up to you and ask whether you're interested in blow or whores.
I had a guy come out of the shadows with a smartphone, start showing me pictures of girls, and then pulling bags of coke practically out of his ass.
I'm not a sex tourist or druggie, so I said no to both. However, that sort of thing happens all the time in touristic parts of Latin America.
>>1226787
Google "Colombian drug laws" and 'Colombian prison system" before making a decision on that. Not trying to tell you what your decision should be, it's your life, but am trying to tell you to make an informed decision.
>>1226787
both of those thing are too easy to find, but fucking be careful of the dudes o the street who are selling if they are sketchy then just get out of there.
besides the point, cartagena is a literal paradise. the old city is gorgeous, there are multiple beaches and islands with more beaches which are all different, it's really fucking hot but if you're by the ocean and you got that breeze then it's like a dream city.
if i were to reside in colombia i would either live there or in medellin, which is literally the nicest city i've ever been to in my life, nicer than u.s. cities in my opinion.
Have you got experience traveling with a big group of friends?
So far I have been travelling alone or with 1 or 2 friends, but now I'm planning to go to Japan with 10 friends.
Any recommendation or experience you would like to share?
>>1226735
I have been to Istanbul with five friends. Was a clusterfuck but really fun. The only time I've ever gone with more people has been with eight people. But that was skiing so we never had to argue about plans or shit like that. We split into small groups by ability during the day and by night we agreed on somewhere to eat.
I'm not sure how I would handle 10 people on a bigger holiday just because I know how difficult it can be to get everyone to agree and to keep people together. Maybe just say fuck it and agree that sometimes you will split up and to be sure to back at the hotel by a certain time?
>>1226735
Plan ahead
Big groups can be a pain regardless where you are traveling. Plan out as much as you can prior to traveling, and realize that at some point your group will get split up and have a plan for that.
Make sure that everyone has a schedule or an idea of what they would like to do. I can't stress this enough, not everyone regardless how good of friends you all are, will want to do the exact same thing.
Don't try to always keep people in one large group. People regardless how close of friends they might be, can get on each others nerves or may want to go do something on their own.
>>1226799
Small groups are a great idea, if you have 10 people going splitting into 2 or 3 groups can avoid a lot of confusion and unneeded headaches.

Going off previous thread.
Mongolia is a very remote country and the infrastructure outside the capital is almost nonexistent, therefore what you can do is find a yurt, talk to the family and i'm sure an arrangement can be made with them
>>1226587
>therefore what you can do is find a yurt, talk to the family and i'm sure an arrangement can be made with them
nobody speaks english outside UB so, good luck with that. I traveled across mongolia by motorcycle and people on the steppe invite you to their home, that's their custom, but they expect you to stay one night max, if at all.
There are volunteer work projects you can do, which place you with mongolian families.
You should realise though that if you stay with a legit nomadic family, you will have to work. All day, regardless of conditions. And the work will be hard. There will be no access to showers etc. or any kind of western comforts.
heres something i found

Ok, has any of you poorfags gotten sponsored in some way to travel? I feel like i hear of and meet people getting sponsorships surprisingly often, for stuff that feels semi-normal.
I'm asking out of curiosity, and since I'm planning on biking through Europe during the summer. It's not spectacular in any way but I'm a good photographer and therefore might give the company something in return.
So: have you? How did you get it? What did you get? What did you do? Etc..
First and last self-bump
Not exactly what you're looking for I'm sure but my wife is well off and since we started dating she's basically paid most of our traveling. I've also funded my friend when he was 200 Euros short so he could join the rest of us on a trip.
I guess what I'm saying is you should make good friends or find a good gf/wife.

Best suitcase for traveling for a month or so every year? What things should I consider / look out for?
>>1225758
Best is the most expensive you can afford.
The best of everything would probably be a Pelican, or the one that can check itself in and has a little screen that displays barcode ticket.

reckon the handlers will still find a way to reck it Lol
