Looking for medieval style tabletop rpgs that don't have much if any magic. It doesn't have to be historical or anything, but I want something that doesn't rely on having wizards running around.

Hoping to have something that support both low level soldier/explorer adventuring, AND eventual realm management. In before "just strip the magic out of ACKS".

Monsters like goblins and whatnot are optional. Elves are right out.

Chivalry & Sorcery and Harn are the most detailed systems that try to simulate a "real" fantasy world.

I believe the latest edition of Chiv is available on RPGNow for free and Harnmastr/player is easy enough to scrounge up...

Maybe a bit more magical than you're looking for, but try this

http://www.fantasist.net/dragonquest.shtml

It's got a very northern medieval European folklore feel. There is magic, there are elves and dwarves and whatnot, but all the good magic is used in hours long rituals that most people won't have the time and inclination and resources for.

If you're an ultra, ultra powerful mage, you can finally cast a firebolt spell that's about as powerful as a longbow's arrow. It's pretty useless for combat; although it is useful for detection and trickery. Think less dnd mage shooting fireballs, and more the evil cult performing a ritual which HAS to be done on the stroke of midnight of Walpurgisnacht.

But it will definitely support low level exploration and adventuring, as well as realm management.

Do you guys ever made your players play already existing characters from a fiction?
Me (the DM) and my group were talking the other day about playing as the Fellowship of the Rings in an alternative scenario where Boromir survived the Amon Hen battle. We were talking about playing Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as they travel together to Rohan.

So basically this thread has two points:

>Have you ever tried giving already existing characters to roleplay to your players and would you deal with them playing them out of character?
>how different would LOTR be if Boromir didn't die at Amon Hen? How would have Denethor react? Faramir? What role would the Captain of Gondor play in Rohan? How would his relation evolve with Aragorn?

Also should I use the One Ring system? I heard mixed opinions about it.

Gee, man, I mean, it'd be very different, you know?

Considering that at the moment of his death he was days away from succumbing to the lure of The Ring, things might have been quite different actually.

I'm looking to include a smaller chess challenge as part of a roleplaying adventure, that is to be played with real pieces.

In order to have this as a fun gimmick and not a complete speedbump for those not interested in chess, I was thinking of not playing an entire game but instead starting out in the middle of one.

What are some good, beginner, chess puzzles that can still be played out?

The DM will play vs one player, but all other players can help out.

Dullahan as a race is an interesting concept. Not sure why they wouldn't have something to keep their heads in place above their bodies, though. It's a convenient vantage point that keeps both their hands free.

Perhaps the most obvious parallel to the conscious/unconscious split in D&D is the overworld-Underdark split. The underground world directly represents death and the unconscious. Many ancient civilizations believed the underworld, the land of the dead, the afterlife, could be physically entered by descending a staircase into the depths of the earth.

> the characters meet up

> the PCs pursue said goal
> the PCs learn new skills in order to survive the adventure
> complete the adventure
> they've probably lose some resources/allies along the way
> they go back to civilization
> they're stronger/more skilled than they were at the start

this is the basic structure of most adventure-based rpgs anyway

Significantly.
I mean, the power level of those guys are intense.
My group of modern teens have the power of can punch through bricks and turn into a raven. It aint exactly the same ballpark.
My group of exalted characters are newly exalted dragonbloods. And were doing something more akin to spy drama. Weve just reached the poi t were extras are not a threat. We just got our first daiklaive, and its shit!
Our high fantasy group have a shot. But these guys are.... Crazy powerful really. I mean, the archer can unleash a quiver worth of arrows that turns into trees midflight. But i seem to recall these guys running through concrete buildings like its no thing. Our warrior is immortal until she has nothing to fight for, but shes shit at ranged and all but the metalgarurumon(?) can fly. She might be able to match the harlequinn in strength but absolutely not speed. She can be neutralized and ignored. Our inventor can use fate manipulation he's creatove and cpyld think of something. They need to be clever and group up. Some right and proper gangstomp.

I want to run a game set in the Gaiman-verse. Primarily the American Gods parts, though I'm not adverse to dipping into London Below or the Hemstock's domain. Death and company may also make an appearance.

Do you think it would be more fun to have my players be humans who have just become aware of the world of old and new gods, or be newly formed new gods? Any ideas for interesting NPCs?

I don't have a system in mind either, is there one that would be suitable?

Unknown Armies or World of Darkness both seem to fit thematically, although your system choice really depends on what you want the game to focus on, we know the setting but what would be the subject?
>>
>>48789314
>>48788742

Scion. The Game even sites American Gods as a driving inspiration, right down to the Norse-wank.

Additionally, the game is designed to allow for players to start as humans newly awakened to the realm of the Gods and go all the way up to Titan fuckery.

Welcome to the thread for d20 station, a rules light Space Station 13 server.

>What is Space Station 13?
It's a 2D top down atmospherics simulator with who dun it gameplay layered on top. Each crew member aboard the station has a specific job to perform, while a select few are selected to be traitors (assassin/spy/thief).

>How do I play?
You'll need to download the BYOND client. There's games other than SS13, but enter those at your own risk.
BYOND Download link: http://www.byond.com/download/
You'll also want a BYOND account, which gives you a ckey so you can save preferences and be recognized by the game. It's highly recommended to make an account if you're experiencing connection issues or don't want to be a fat tourist/starving space bum.

To connect: Open BYOND, click the gear in the upper right. Click "Open Location" and paste in the IP below.
byond://76.16.8.127:28014 OR byond://d20station.ddns.net:28014

>How do I play
Use OOC (backspace say" in the bottom, type OOC and hit enter) and ask someone for help on how to play. People will almost always help you get a grip of the game if you're polite about it, just don't reveal too much in-round information in OOC. There's also wikis dedicated to documenting the spaceman way of life, but they vary widely from server to server.

>What are the rules?
The rules are very relaxed and admins try to take a hands-off approach to administrating. Admins will generally only intervene if someone is explicitly playing to ruin the game or being a dick. Reminder to read the rules in-game.

>What map/code do you run?
We run a heavily modified Ministation map with mostly custom code. Most jobs on Ministation are merged with similar counterparts and head roles have been re-enabled.

>D20 wiki where?
http://robustvinyl.com/ss13/wiki/

>When does everyone play?
Check out the server pop graph to see when people are playing: https://www.ss13.se/servers/3031/

>Who are these tripfaggots?
Usually admins/coders in the server.

>>

Possibly, I know the interesting thing with it is that whenever you detonate a TTV and it stays there, the gases in the tanks seemed to have reacted.

Alright /tg/ I'm looking for some advice.

In one of my games my character is a prince of a kingdom, the kingdom used to be under control of the king and the GM has put a government in charge of it and has turned i into a "rich proser and poor suffer" kingdom, the economy is great but the people are dying.

I have taken it upon myself overthrow this government and go back to the crown and help keep my people out of poverty and shit.

What advice can you give on instilling a new regime? overthrowing a government of mostly mages? and how to run things while I'm off adventuring?

My first plan is to gather them all in one location and kill them with 50 explosive runes, then work form there, but I'm sure theres a much better way

You may be able to find some inspiration from historical records, more specifically the Russian Revolution.

Aside from that, you will need two things to happen before the scenario you described will be ready to be overthrown. You need the rich to lose faith in and stop backing the current government, and you will need to splinter the ruling faction into bickering sub-factions. How you go with that, I don't know offhand, but it's a start.
>>
>>48786724

You need to get popular support from the people so they can give you places to hide and store stuff for your revolution. This will also make you more noticeable to the leaders so be prepared to kick some teeth in.

Find someone(s) within the population to be your proxy(ies) when you are away. Make sure you guys are all cool with each other and know how to git shit done.

Don't be afraid to import people from elsewhere who will help get shit done.

Tho real talk, if the population is still "subjugated" and not "ready to kill some fucking nobles" chances are you could just wipe out the ruling class and nobody will give a shit. And then as time goes on and they realize you aren't a shitter then it's all uphill from there.

Do you want the old Royal Family back or do you want a new Royal Family?

Horror Adventures.jpg
98KB, 500x613px
So I saw pic at my LGS, I thumbed through it but ultimately decided to get the 5th Bestiary instead. But it got me thinking:

Why not set up a campaign around the idea of the PC's being in a clearly horror-themed setting, with all the atmosphere and trappings of a horror setting, but kept a 'heroic' tone for the adventure itself?

A better way to describe the premise is this:

The world is a typical horror/slasher-type setting with homicidal maniacs and horrible supernatural monsters run rampant and most people are just victims waiting to meet some horrible, grisly end, except the PC's who've decided "enough is enough! we're going to fight back" and go on some crusade to defeat the murderers and monsters who have taken over.

I kinda thought out that, in-lore, the world used to be a nicer place but some diety of murder, mayhem, and nightmares found a way to take away the other God's abilities to influence the world while increasing his own, so that his 'worshipers' and chosen could run amok with all the divine favor and no one else could oppose them.

The PC's would start at lvl 1, to represent that they are not "larger than life" heroes of old, but little more than regular people who just decided that they want to fight back rather than just follow horror tropes. but as they manage to succeed, they would little-by-little become the epic heroes that could legitimately become legends and lead others to follow them, and possibly restoring the other Gods to power to ensure that when the world is set right, it stays that way.

It was just an idea I was playing with at work today...

Thoughts?
