Why do people get mad that the Ultramarines are the best?

It is their thing. Their niche. It is like the Space Wolves being wolfy. It's in their name.

And they have always been the best, since longer than many complainers have been alive.

I just don't get it, it's ancient, entrenched canon from the creators of the game! Like, Emperor on throne, Chaos bad, Ultramarines are the greatest chapter of them all. Does it really matter that much to people if a chapter is better than their favorites?

Is it trolling to point out that one of the creators of 40k wrote the first Space Marine Codex which explicitly states they are the greatest?

Can /tg/ help me figure it out what would draw people who loves games like Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma but dislikes Elders Scrolls and Baldurs Gate to play a TTRPG? More specifically (but not necessarily) D&D.

So they hate fun and love struggle. Run a Sandbox campaign like Elemental Evils, or a turbo-difficult campaign like Tomb of Horrors.

I know that 5e has hardcore rules where essentially a short rest is a day and a long rest is a week.

From there just say 0 hp = dead and you can confidently say that you are running a game that is hard as fucking balls and making mistakes is bad news bears.

Bonus points for including creative encounters in environments for them (and their enemies) to use.

Maybe they just like the atmosphere and aesthetics of the first two. Very little else will transfer between the two mediums.

I want to start a miniature wargaming scene in my area, starting with my friends and me.

What are some good options? None of us are huge fans of the 40k lore, and a couple of my friends STRONGLY favor fantasy over sci-fi.

With those criteria, I know WarmaHordes and Malifaux are available. What else?

Also, how do we grow a scene? Just sit down in a game shop and start playing and hope enough other people become interested that the shop starts carrying it? If we do this, should we get the shop to order it for us (like when you ask for something they don't have and they say they can get it), to kind of foster goodwill so we didn't just drop in with shit we clearly bought elsewhere and take up their space?

Are there any other strategies or suggestions? I'd really like to get a thriving community here.

Also, would picking a skirmish level game help keep prices down?

Do you have a LGS? If so, they likely already have a wargaming scene which you can tap into. If they do, you can boost appeal by helping the owner set up a tournament in one of the game types and spreading it around on Facebook. If you have a LGS and there isn't a wargaming scene start a Facebook group for wargaming in your town, and then ask the owner to put people who buy wargaming miniatures from him to direct them to your group.

IF you do not have a LGS you're going to face an uphill battle. There'll be a local community center somewhere which will allow you to rent a room on weekends, get some trestles and you and your friends go down for a few weekends, see how you like it. If it's good, you can reach out over community noticeboards and the internet to find new players and induct them into your group. At some point you might want to broach monthly membership (something like $5.00) to help cover the cost of the hall, or selling cans of drink from an esky, but your mileage may vary.

>Also, would picking a skirmish level game help keep prices down?
Hahaha... The fewer the models you need, the more expensive each model is.
>>
>>48737665
I believe that Infinity and Dust are more skirmishy-type wargames.

Battletech is definitely a skirmish.

You grow a scene by playing the game, having a good time, and when people wanna join in you let them join.

Shops tend to be pretty nice about ordering stuff so yeah I'd ask them about it. Usually it's just good business for them to get people in the door having a good time because that shit is infectious when other people come in to just shop around.

Also
>>48737924
Is true.

From my experience the most "bang for your buck" in terms of wargames is Battletech. The starter box is literally everything you could ever want for a good and long fucking time before you even think about getting more shit.

Not only that, but lasgun's laser tavel instantly making it impossible to miss. Meanwhile bolter shell is affected by gravity/wind.

I propose lowering SM with bolters BS by 1 and upping guardsmen BS by 2 to reflect that. SM with multilasers are BS 6.

>What a piece of shit gun how many bullets it can hold? Six?
To reflect that everytime you shoot bolters you roll a d6, on 1 you ran out of ammo and skip shooting phase.

A tribe of Yeti have settled within a high cave on a snowy mountain top, the tribe numbers 9 males, 9 female and a cub. The Alpha male Kal, The Elder shaman Mek and the Matriarch Lrouns are among their numbers, one of the females is currently pregnant and no other sapient creatures have yet to be encountered. When we last left a scouting party had reached a frozen lake atop the mountain which allowed a view onto the other side showing expansive green fields with a large cluster of wooden boxes and to the eastern side of the mountain a smoke plume. Meanwhile the females had found a caved in tunnel and a large cave containing a waterfall deeper into the mountain

Current Supplies - 4 Goat carcasses (16 food) Berries (4 food) Fat mushrooms (3 food) thin mushrooms (3 food), 11 Logs, rocks, firewood
>Yetis will have to eat roughly once every 5 turns to maintain good health

The females return out of the mountains depths around the same time the male scouting party returns from the morning hike, The yetis are currently crude and tribal and have little in the way of complex communication, they roughly communicate that there were "wood caves" on the other side of the mountain while the females grunt about a larger cave further back, the Elderly Shaman Mek sits around the crackling fire sorting out the mushrooms into piles.

>9 Females, Lrouns and pregnant
>9 Males, Mek and Kal
>Cub

Feel free to split up the group however you see fit and head down or up the mountain, east or west across the mountain, hunting, scavenging, breeding, research, into the cave etc

look for more goats to start a herd and harvest some more timber and stones from the local area.
>>
>>48735806
The males leave the confines of the cave and begin scouring lower in the mountain where plants are more abundant, the same large goat heard is spotted below grazing on a large flat piece of land. Kal and 4 other males carefully climb down the slopes attempting to get closer. Mean while the other 4 males scour the area around the cave, harvesting berries and mushrooms while others snap branches off for firewood and gather logs and stones. The smoke plume from the eastern side of the mountain has subsided and the snow has all but stopped for now leaving crisp morning air. Meanwhile back in the cave Mek has scratched the word for Dream into the wall and left under it the Thin mushrooms, while the word for food is filled with the Fat Mushrooms

How do zombies in d20 or standard D&D settings work? Are they just animating the body with negative energy, or can you also tie a soul to the zombie body to mimic a resurrected humanoid?

In Ghostwalk you have to preserve the body for resurrection from the Ghost class or to be thrown into the afterlife, but do any other games deal with the afterlife as anything other than

What kind of missions/objectives/'modes' are common in wargames? I'm more used to vidya in general, so I think of stuff like CtF, Payload modes, deathmatches, tower defenses, or MOBAs.
Is there much roleplay in wargames, or does that not really come up?
I asked one of my friends who's into D&D about something similar a while ago but he said it wouldn't work out very well, and I'm hoping to maybe get a second opinion.
31 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>48735122
The most common game modes for wargames are "Kill everything until they're literally all dead", "kill enough of everything that they're functionally worthless", "kill more of them than they kill of you within the turn limit", king of the hill, "reach the far edge" (Opposed by "prevent them from reaching the far edge"), "kill the VIP", or scenarios that combine multiple objectives in succession.
Roleplaying isn't usually a Thing. Games like Battletech that support campaigns complete with in-universe downtime for maintenance, reinforcements, and travel time between strategic objectives can support role playing, but it's not part of the core gamespace.
>>
>>48735122
KoW has 6 scenarii (modes) in its base book
1- Kill, where you get points for killing enemy units and that's it
2- Invasion, when you score points for every of your units on your opponents side
3- King of the hill, where you score points by having your units within 12" of the middle of the table by the end of he game
4- Pillage, where you have to hold 5-7 objectives at the end of the game by being 3" of them at most and not being contested
5- CTF with 3 flags (loot objectives)
6- a mix of 1 and 4

There are more scenarii in other books but those are the ones played in tournaments.
>>
>>48735243
Oh, and the reason why roleplaying isn't usually a thing is that you need a third party to arbitrate it if you want it to really have any meaningful impact on the game.
You can banter all over your opponent, but you can't exactly influence NPCs or implement strange plans that the rules might not explicitly cover without someone to run those NPCs or work out how you could go about doing it.

Serious response is the 3.5 DMG. It's Gynax approved. I'm not joking.

Most of the threads we have here about bad GMs, bad adventures, how to GM, tips for GMing, etc., etc., are all answered by reading that book. Things like
>I fudged some rolls/used NPC interaction or other GM control to save a player from a pointless death. Did I do okay, or should I avoid this blatant railroading?
Answered by the section on player death, with the example being a PC who gets run over by a carriage while crossing the street because he failed a roll or two. Do you fudge rolls or otherwise do something to keep him alive? Yes, because that's a shitty way for your level 10 PC to go. It serves no narrative purpose, and he didn't do anything dumb. He had some bad luck, and that was that.

So on and so forth.
They didn't make it one of the core rulebooks just to move more books. There's good information in there.

How do you feel about a setting with a video game-like equipment progression? For example, bronze being the most common and weakest material for crafting arms and armor, followed by progressively better real world materials up until high level elites are carrying items of fantastical materials like orichalcum. Then you'd have legendary equipment made of ridiculous things like crystalized angel tears or static space-time folded a million times into a fucking dimensional rainbow katana.

Basically something more interesting than 99.9% of equipment being made of steel or wood.

Honestly these days I prefer systems that move as far away as possible from vidya style progressive crunch. I don't even play DnD any more (for many reasons, this being one of them).
>>
Just use a craftsmanship system
Inferior, Common, Better, Best.

Inferior inflicts penalties, Better has a small bonus, Best has a big bonus.
For armor, that's

>no effect
>weighs less
>weighs less and blocks a tad more damage

Why haven't you read your GURPS anon?

Depends on what you are your players are looking for but that being said I'm pretty sure D&D already does exactly what you describe.
