Good morning /tg/

I'm a 24 (nearly 25),and due to me moving a lot as a kid/teen, I don't have any diplomas and I'm stuck working for private security companies. I'd like to work in the games industry, (Tabletop games, card games,etc...)
So... How do I ? I'm creating a board game,at first just for me and my friends but I'm wondering if it'd be a good start, maybe do something clean and professional and try to present it at an event ?

And to keep thread interesting, what was your first tabletop game that got you hooked ? Favourite game now ?

For me it was Talisman, and now savage worlds.

Is that a fancy way to say bouncer?

>I'd like to work in the games industry, (Tabletop games, card games,etc...) So... How do I ?
Well, you apply and keep applying until you succeed. No degree necessary (unless you're bound to make the game that will last decades and make you a millionaire, in which case I suggest mathematics / game theory).
Knowing the right people helps too, nepotism is still prevalent in the game industry, like in most "creative" profession. So socialization / networking at cons and stuff might help.

>Favourite game now ?
>For me it was Talisman, and now savage worlds.
Okay, scratch everything. For you and game design there's only one advice. Don't you fucking dare!

Nope, more like guarding villas. It's a joke as well though.

Keep at it and dont stop applying, its 60% socializing, 40% work. If you want to be a designer, what games have you designed? Everyone has ideas, few people execute those ideas. Have a finished game you can show off if someone asks to see something.

Hey guys, don't really post here very often byt I had a question. If one wanted to make their own DnD ruleset (Star Wars D20 was based off of DnD is an example), are there any resources on the internet that might help with that?

don't.

But if you really want to, SRD for all editions and basic rules are readily available for free. I'm not sure what you need beyond that.

But seriously.
Don't.

Depends on what you want out of a dungeon crawl, friend.

Do you want easy to stat monsters?
Do you want to fight for basic supplies?
Do you want every encounter to be deadly?
Do you want to grab loot and hit things?
Do you want a Gygaxian style "fuck you" wonderland?
>>
>>50344750
I've been playing a lot of Wizardry and Grimrock lately and realized how much I love crawling in the dungeons of Zelda recently.
>>
For a classic dungeon crawl I'd say to check out Basic Fantasy RPG or Labyrinth Lord. They're both incarnations of B/X D&D and they're both completely free. I also hear Torchbearer is also fairly good at this, but I've never played it. GURPS also has a Dungeon Fantasy line of books to help facilitate in playing D&D-esque fantasy worlds.

Personally I'd like to give Mini Six a shot for dungeon crawling with stuff from D6 Fantasy bolted on, if only to see how it could potentially work.

I use it as a general system (that system being unisystem). It's point buy, lethal enough and easily homebrewed.
Its got tons of splats to play many genres. Great for zompocolypse games and if you look into Armageddon it can do biblical apocalypses as well.
I can answer any question regarding it. It's my favourite system andI've been playing it for years.

Take a standard 52 card deck. Seperate them by suits.

Play with one suit and write messages/commands on each card.

If a player is possessed, have them roll to resist, and if they fail, have them draw from this minor deck.

If you mean you want to take control of a player character, then fuck right off. Why have that person play if they get to watch someone else control their character?
>>
>>50343352
In my game, all of my players play two different PCs simultaneously. So if one of them gets kidnapped, or possessed, or just injured and needs to sit out for a while, this doesn't leave the player sitting there watching the rest of us have fun without him.

It's worked well for us, leaving the story more free to disable or bench characters without OOC logistical concerns like allowing a player to stay in the game.
>>
>>50343484
Do you have the player leave one character at base camp and play the other character during a session or can they tag them in between encounters, or are they both active until disabled?

I've thought about having people roll a pair of characters before and wondered about the logistics other people may do.

Let's talk about Warhammer 40,000 novels.
>They're all shit
>they're all terrible
>I'm a shitlord
You folks need not apply. Friendly topic, friendly thread.

I'm looking for 40k novels that heavily feature Daemons. Not just Guardsmen fighting Chaos and a Daemon comes in and fucks shit up before getting blasted. I'm talking actual incursions and fighting wars against them.

What have you been reading?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I don't know about any books that feature daemons heavily, but the Night Lords trilogy by ADB is damn good, as is The First Heretic which is also by him.

Beyond that the books are hit or miss. I personally couldn't get past the first few chapters of the Grey Knights omnibus that I have but I've read Malus Darkblade's whole saga (not 40K I know but still Black Library) several times.

Recently I've been finishing up Path of the Incubus so I can move on to Path of the Archon, then I'm going to read Daemon World.
>>
You don't fight wars against daemons. If daemons have ripped into reality by bursting through a psyker, everyone on the planet and possibly the system loses. The war is already lost, the only reason why the people of a planet continue to fight is to make sure the distress call to Earth gets sent, and the answer won't arrive for possibly decades if not centuries. If you want to read about large daemon conflicts you just pick up the Daemonhunters Codex but such events - Chaos forces don't just have daemons just sitting around hanging out, it's a massive drain on resources and they summon them because they're needed.

That's why Exterminatus is invoked on planets suffering daemonic incursion because there's no way to reclaim it. Yes, you do read about instances where the planet's assets are too valuable for Exterminatus, but you have to realize THAT situation is exceptionally rare and such a planet would have Imperial, Machine Cult, or Space Marine units nearby to relieve the planet.

On top of all that, the daemons can't actually stick around. Their grip on reality is tenuous at best and only fueled by the psyker through which they entered. What they do while they're around is corrupt a population then fuck off while the planet falls to Chaos or possess the psyker but then they're just using the psyker as a puppet.

A war against daemons is like a war against a sudden instance of tornadoes - it just doesn't happen.
>>
The Siege of Vraks Forge World books start with renegades versus guardsmen, upgrades into marines versus marines, and as the years drag on and the shitfest reaches criticla proportions, daemons start showing up all over the place. They're still more of the icing on the Chaos cake rather than anything else and most of the writing (they're not actually novels) is mostly about regiments getting heroically annihilated.

The First War for Armageddon was also a war featuring daemons and friends but the only novel that deals with it is The Emperor's Gift, which only goes over the final showdown with Angron, and that itself only takes up about 5% of the book.

I have a group who are big fans of Dark Souls, and I'm pretty into it, myself. I'd like to do a brief Dark Souls campaign about a group of newly-turned undead.

The question is, what system to use? I'm mostly familiar with pathfinder, D&D, and NWOD, but none of those feel quite 'right' to me for the level of lethality and quick, decisive, strategic combat that's present in souls.

What would /tg/ recommend? Has /tg/ ever statted out any souls stuff before?

As for story, I'm thinking of sticking them in the deep dungeons of the Vinheim dragon school, and having them have to fight their way out of town during an outbreak of undeath. Your input welcome here too.

I'd fist suggest that, considering how many unknown factors there are concerning the Dark Souls lore, it might be wiser to simply create a setting INSPIRED by the Souls universe, sharing many of its themes, rather than flat-out setting a campaign in it.
>>
>>50342549

I know the lore pretty well -- I figure by setting something in the 'human' part of the world, I'm pretty free to make up my own shit. It's a lot less restrictive to my mind than even, say, Game of Thrones, exactly because of all the unknown factors. You can paint your own picture in those grey areas.

I agree with this - either make an entirely original setting in the style of Souls or take the DS2 approach and set it in a new, independant 'cycle' of the world.

I would doubly encourage the first option because the DS style of die and die again translates poorly to tabletop (speaking from experience). Prehaps something akin to Kingdom Death: Monster where all your characters are frail survivors who hunt individual horrifying beasts instead of hordes.

Depends on the type of rackets the Slashers are running.

Seems like the dark underbelly of Monsters Inc. Fear being generated as some sort of ambrosial narcotic that's distributed by the Urban Legend Mafia.

If they're the puppet masters to the sort of everyday venues of criminal enterprise it would seem more Batman and pulpy. A crazed thematic monster in charge of perpetrating human evils.

Also the slashers might be seen as the patron saints of the organizations they control. Like the Mexican drug cartels Jesús Malverde.

Skullgirls aside from being a waifu fighting game has a host of pretty twisted individuals as criminal movers and shakers.
>>
>>50342148
As for goofy v serious it depends on whether you want to justify it or not, is there a reason in setting that these people who embody slasher villain tropes exist? if there is you could probably play it a bit more seriously

let's look at the advantages/disadvantages they would have
>can only be killed by a final girl
this would make taking out hits on them much more difficult than normal, that kind of security's good for a mob boss
>can generally be assumed to always be watching
got to keep track of what your underlings are doing if you want to keep things running well, slasher villains are uniquely suited to that
>can't be escaped or overpowered (except by a final girl)
if you find yourself in a situation where none of your men can take out a specific target, just do it yourself, it's below your station sure, but it's guaranteed results
>can't use guns
a handicap for sure but more than made up for by the above advantages

Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1976. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

Convey early on that combat is seriously brutal and deadly. If any of your players have played CoC, it's kinda like that- dying instantly because of one bad roll is a very real possibility.
