well think about it, you've got all sorts of magical fantastical shit out there, then you've got this fucking human. and yet some how, despite being fucking worthless 90% of the time, his people are still Hot Shit. With no explanation. Or a bullshit explanation. The humans are the race that gets shoe horned into everything. That annoying friend that shows up to every D&D game, acts like its the coolest most unique thing ever, but always has the exact same character.

Humans pretty similar to rodents, honestly. We reproduce in large quantities, have a tenacious cowardice that keeps us alive, can eat, and thus survive, off most things, spread diseases like wildfire, and a lot of the time we'd be totally fucked were it not for our numbers. Add in tools, destructive tendencies, and the common but not universal instinct to protect each other.

Now, Mary Sues? The other guy was right, it depends on the setting. If we're giving it a fair outlook, humans would be dominant not because of our technology, fervency, or even our numbers--other races have us beat there--but due to the fact that we can survive just about anywhere in addition to all that other shit. Honestly, I think that primes us up to be the villain, a horde composed mostly of mediocre adversaries that threatens to overrun the earth.

Which might make our current existence the actual worst timeline where the BBEG wins.

The DnD approach explains it pretty well. Humans are the varied ones. An elf is an elf, a dwarf is a dwarf, but a human? Who knows.

Humans have potential for great good and great evil.To uphold law or create chaos. The varied nature means that humans simply have more tales to tell.

For a more realistic example, compare men to women. On average men are more likely to take risks. Whether good or bad, this winds up with far more variation. The majority of the rich and homeless alike are men. The most loved and hated people in history are largely male. You get the idea.

So it's like that, but with races instead of genders.

But for some reason, as a general rule for all of fantasy no human civilization is ever going to reach that amazing powerful magical empire for long at all. They always get destroyed or ruined in the far ancient past only to leave artifacts and temples everywhere. But they never ever get to keep any large scale society.

Not really, typically they are jack of all trades, masters of none which often makes sense for how fantasy and the fantasy races are laid out, and it's fairly rare for someone to lay out an interesting and varied racial landscape and then throw it away by making human's marry sues.

Now Sci-fi? That's where humans go full marry sue.

Humans are the total opposite of rodents, and the problem is that there is nothing that we know of in the universe that is comparable at all to us. We combine practically every aspect of all animal life- the intelligence of Cetaceans, the building ability of ants, the tool use of apes, the reproduction of rodents, the social behavior of canines (and yet the sociopathy of lizards), etc. All in one package, that wrapped up together becomes an apex of predator.

One thing I actually really like about the Witcher Series is that for fucking once, humanity is not portrayed as the bitch underdog, but the oppressor and conqueror, who beat the ever loving shit out of those knife eared bastards and forced them to live in slums and regularly started pogroms against them.

To add to that: public institutions that persist in themselves are also unique to humans, according to pre-3e D&D. Things like libraries, or colleges. Humans, because they live shorter lives, have needed to find shortcuts to better stand on the shoulders of giants.

For the Elves and Dwarves, their cultural leaders and master craftsfolk are living libraries, while certain people keeping private collections of books--but the spoken word is king. Endeavors are tied more strongly to individual people, and pass with them. Education is more private and personal and discerning, and much more Socratic, but less efficient for all of that. They don't have quite the same fire lit under their asses as humans.
