How do you deal with players that flake out from games? I've been waiting nearly a month and a half for a Skype game to start, and when it's finally starting on a day that the GM specified, nobody but myself and theGM have bothered to turn up. This happens a lot with these guys, and they always blame it on 'RL issues'.

It takes some doing sometimes, but just keep at it.
Make sure they're engaged in the game in off time. Ensure they're committing to the time slot by asking them directly "will we see you at the game each week?". Talk to them like PEOPLE not just meatspace filling a hole.

They -HAVE- been engaged in the game. They've made characters. Hell, one of them's been helping the GM on the side. Can't exactly turn them away, they're our friends. It just gets irritating when this happens- is there no other way?

In terms of personality, description, and situation, how do you create NPCs that your players (not neccisarily the PCs) enjoy/care about/want to know more about?

Obviously if you stick them in the scene and give them a reason to be memorable, that helps, but I'm more looking for something along the lines of creating attachment, not just wonderment.

Listen here you pedantic fucker. Do you really remember any of the random bandits you've fought in any game? PCs get swords pointed at them as often as they get asked "How do you do?". Even if they managed to get an ambush set up and actually hold the sword against the throat of a bound PC, once the PCs get out of their sticky situation and kill the bandits, they're not exactly going to feel attached to the memory.

How you you make melee combat less static?

I'm talking specifically about WFRP2e and the 40k stuff, but it seems like whenever melee combat happens its always just two (or three) guys just standing in the same spot rolling at each other.

I have a few ideas to fix this, but I'd like to hear your input. How about granting a free manoeuvre action on a successful attack? It's not like anyone uses that action anyway.

Any ideas? Am I just a shit GM whos bad at making combat interesting? Are my players just boring?

Not specific to your problem but here's my general guideline for making an interesting encounter
>first pick the enemies you will be using, look at and think about their stats, use these to decide how they would probably approach a fight, what's their best option?
>then look at the player characters' builds and composition, then think about what their go-to strategy is, then set up the terrain, goals, whatever to stop that happening

the idea is to get rid of the obvious option so the players have to vary their approach to the fight

Thanks, that makes me think that more ranged enemies might be a solution. The current campaigns have been largely anti-beastmen, undead, Orks so far.

mixing enemy types is one way of removing the players' first strategy, I prefer using placement and terrain though

Awesome. You get some great wargames playable on Vassal that you don't really have space for.

At least in my experience, there isn't really a "Vassal" community. There's communities for this, that, and the other game, which people play on Vassal, but there's not a lot of connection between the guys who play Game of Thrones and the guys who play World in Flames, or something.

As far as I can tell, it's apples and oranges. Vassal is for boardgames and doesn't really have a Roleplay setting like Roll20. Rolll20 is the same, but in reverse.

I have a game I'm planning and I think I need some advice.
There is an NPC that I plan on grooming to become the BBEG (unless the players kill him early or similarly do something entirely unexpected)

He is a mage in a position close to the to the royalty in charge.
In the battle that launches the adventure, he does his job by whisking off with the vips, protecting them, and saving himself.

So my question is this: How do you have a Treacherous Advisor type character and not have it be obvious?
Even to genre savvy players?

Obviously, no goatee or creepiness.
And he has the benefit of already having set his plans in motion so he just needs to wait in order to benefit from them.
Unless the PCs act to screw them up.

I'd like to actually surprise the players with a reveal.

Have him help the party out. Make them get attached.

Then have him show up somewhere and kill one of the party. After they've done what he wants.

Oh also blow the city to the ground, or the king's castle.

Put him in a situation where he seems to actually be in danger, and have him berate the PCs for not saving him quickly enough. Make it clear he's not doing anything to ingratiate himself to the PCs. If they press for more, have him launch into a diatribe about how his duty is to protect the royal family, and the presence of the chaotic PCs puts him on edge.

Make the King a pain is the neck to deal with (take your pick of personality flaws) so the players go through the adviser for quests and rewards and whatnot, since he's relatively normal and seems pretty annoyed with the King's shit himself

Heading with a friend, but I'm not sure on the group size. I think about 8 people.

It's a High Fantasy setting with two main factions; Islanders and continentals. There's this island where a big plague was brought in by guys from the continent. It's wiped almost everyone out and the group is trying to get out of dodge. At least that's all I've been told by my friend.

I was sent a book with a metric fuck tonne of classes and rules, but nothing substantial about the setting so I don't really know how to make my character very relevant.

Thoughts on Shadowverse?

It seems to me like the online card game that got potential advantages of a videogame-cards right, namely fast pace of matches and ease of access. At the same time it's not utterly braindead, inconsistent, and horribly managed like Heartstone is.

Hey fa/tg/uys, I'm new to TGaming and I'm in a pickle. I tried making a TCG board game hybrid but i cant find a good reason to finish the project. I think I would rather just play some games before making one, for exposure and experience. What are some tabletop games like the WH40K Kill-team game mode I've heard about? or any war games that incorporate trading cards and figurine/tabletop elements?

Infinity is what pops into my mind in the first place. But Malifaux can be called that, although it has a fantasy-horror theme.

What do you mean by that? Random card (or figures?) in booster packs. I don't think you could be hit the market with random stuff if you are not already big enough (but I may be biased, but I hate the TCG way of getting cards, I think LCG is so much better in that way).

If you just mean, that there will be card play added to the miniatures, maybe you should look into BattleLore. It is more a board game then a tabletop, but it has miniatures and cards.

MERCS incorporates cards into its movement system in a pretty novel and effective way.

40k uses datacards for mission objectives, including faction-specific ones. Also occasionally rules, like the cards for Skitarii's Doctrina Imperatives (disposable whole-army 1-turn buffs), although these can be represented without cards entirely.

Oh good, this is a normal flashlight. For a second I was worried about a genre shift.

Really, there's not a great deal that needs to be done here, from an investigator's viewpoint. Run around, find things that don't belong, and shine flashlights at them.

For the things that flashlights don't illuminate, you use holy magic. I will enjoy laughing at them when they complain about unfairness, and then hitting them harder.
