Hey /tg/,
I decided to run a Numenera campaign with a couple of friends who have some experience with RPGs. The thing is - I've never run an RPG as a GM before. So I come to you for tips and ideas on how to prepare the game.
As it stands, I have a couple of concepts, scenes and characters that I want to turn into somewhat of a story, but I'm not quite sure how to tackle it.
How do you design or write for a session?
How much do you suggest should be laid out in advance?
How about towns or cities?
Should I write possible quest lines for each potential hub the players visit?
Basically, how do you organize your story branches together with characters and encounters?
For further reference, I expect the group to be composed of about 4-5 PCs.
Thanks!
Bumpin.
The final bump for the night.

Easiest tip is to not play Numenera.
The setting is A+ shit, but don't try to use any of the mechanics unless you REALLY like rules-light messes. Just use the setting with a different game system of your choice that isn't D&D.
How do you make a setting feel magical without losing track of grounding realism?
Be spare with the magic, or produce a well-crafted magic system that doesn't violate any of the universal laws.
>>50322139
What about a high fantasy setting?
Make magic small in scale, subtle, and pervasive. Magic is everywhere, in everything, and believed in by all; but almost never powerful or efficacious enough to change the world.
Hey /tg/, poor fag GM here, can anyone send me campaign cartographer? I need a better map-making tool than MS Paint.
>>50322082
http://nepeta.mozai.com/downloads/mapgen2.swf this is a nifty tool that you may find useful. It's not what you're really looking for though.
Just torrent it

Not OP but that's pretty cool. Thanks for the share.
What did he mean by this?
>>50320353
Setting his augury scanners to known Eldar signatures. Can you not speak Ork?
>>50320413
Looks like somebody needs a refresher course.
>>50320353
He's scanning for non-Orks.
I'm looking for a good ruleset which would work well for solo Fantasy wargaming.
I have a disability, live in a rural area and I tend to not go out much except for local trips which means that belonging to a club or travelling to find like minded gamers isn't really possible.
Soooo if anyone can suggest a workable rule system I'd be keen to hear about it.
Only bump
>>50319472
Aren't there like internet games or table top simulator or something you could do to not play alone? Or would you prefer it this way?
>>50321112
I'd rather to have a hobby outside the screen, yeah.
Dare I ask if any of you guys have ever played this? My friends and I are tired of coming up with our own campaigns and wanna play in a setting that's established and they've read a few of these books (I haven't personally because 14 fucking books is just way too much for me to deal with) and suggested this game. What do you guys think of it? How is the system compared to D&D (4th ed) and Pathfinder which we usually play?
The Ogier(?) have the weirdest depiction ever to me. Like some strange Firbolg before I even knew what a Firbolg was. Also why is Mats spear golden?
To answer your question, I'm not sure. The first few books used to advertise the RPG for a while. But later on it just stopped.
>>50319384
I have.
The game is absolutely shit. It has all the problems of the d20 system,as well as not really reflecting the sort of world the books get into very well either. And you always have issues in settings based on books that none of your adventures can override the canon in the books, which limits what you can do. I mean, you can overcome it with the right group and the right playstyle, but the game kind of fails to do what it sets out to do.
>>50319530
pretty sure that trio isn't supposed to be any of the book characters.
>>50319384
wanna run WoT RPG?
have the guy who knows the most about the books / setting be the GM, esp. if he is also a great storyteller.
Hey /TG! Let's edit songs to fit 40k together! I'll start:
Lorgar:
Horus?
(Knocking: Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock)
Do you want to start a rebellion?
Come on lets go and slay
I never see you anymore
Come out the door
It's like you've gone away...
We used to be battle brothers
And now we're not
I wish you would tell me why!
Do you want to start a rebellion?
It doesn't have to be a rebellion
Horus:
Go away, Lorgar
Lorgar:
Okay, bye...
(Knocking)
Do you want to start a rebellion?
Or ride our assault bikes around our ships' hulls
I think some company is overdue
I've started talking to
my fallen brothers' skulls
(Hang in there, Koran!)
It gets a little lonely
All these empty rooms
Just watching the hours tick by
(Tic-Tock, Tic-Tock, Tic-Tock, Tic-Tock, Tic-Tock)
(Orchestral)
Lorgar:
(Knocking)
Horus?
Please, I know you're in there
People are asking where you've been
They say "Stop worshiping The Emperor," and I'm trying to
I'm right out here for you, just let me in
We only have each other
It's just you and me
What are we gonna do?
Do you want to start a rebellion?
you got me to chuckle, you have my bump
>>50320803
Then I have done the will Of Slaanesh.
I also have a Black Parade one that poses Abbadon as a emo teenager
>>50319372

/tg/, what is your favorite weapon?
I don't mean type of weapon, or even most-used weapon, but that one specific weapon you once had to entrust everything to, that not only held its own, but surpassed expectations and became so useful for so long, or otherwise so memorable that it made you appreciate the type of weapon more and gave you a story you can't forget.
What's that story? How long did you have it? Was that your usual type of weapon? What was? How many foes did it slay? How did you lose it? Do you still have it? Etc.

I don't know about "favorite," but I do remember Crossbow the intelligent crossbow.
DM started a relatively high level adventure giving the players a few quirky magical items, and my bard got hooked up with Crossbow the crossbow, a sentient crossbow capable of casting "hideous laughter" on targets I hit with it, with a caveat- I must tell a joke that Crossbow finds funny every single attack or he won't cast hideous laughter. THAT LIMPDICK LITTLE CRANQUELIN WAS A LYING PIECE OF SHIT. Never triggered on any hit, ever, even after hours of fresh one-liners and new jokes that made the rest of the party crack up. Not even a chuckle.
Fastforward to magical orb fetchquest, taking place in a dungeon that was a sunken castle. We tirelessly bash our way through, and this little fuck is going as far as MOCKING my inability to get him to co-operate. We get to [final boss] room, and immediately are beset upon by several drow lords defending this orb deal, poisoning us with knockout drugs and debuffs, and generally being douchebags. It's a grueling fight, and eventually my struggles with Crossbow, being poisoned, having my party crippled and nearly killed around me, and everything else is driving my bard up a wall, until eventually I decide its time to start casting EVERY SPELL SLOT I POSSIBLY CAN to try and turn this around. Immediately as I switch to this tactic, however, the Drow mage lord casts RAGE on me, giving me bonuses to strength and con, but preventing me from spellcasting. Crossbow still isn't working, and is mocking me by mentioning how low of munitions I am. The ranger's arms are broken and she screams in terror while the mindbroken and magically dominated fighter mauls the wizard (who's probably lower on spells than I am it this point).

Started a campaign two weeks back, just finished our third session. Our dm is new, this is her first try at running a campaign. She's super open to homebrew stuff so far, which is great- I'm playing a half orc monk with outlander background. Found this https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Way_of_the_Drunken_Fist_(5e_Archetype) and she approved.
I've been stuck working late the last two weekends and so i haven't made it to the session early enough to get a chance to discuss what kind of penalties being drunk (poisoned) will incur in order to make the benefits reasonable. Also I'm just shy of brand new to this, so i don't quite know what to even offer as suggestions in this case; i just know that i can't wait for improvised weapons.

Poisoned condition. The archetype states it clearly.

Ah, that's what i was looking for, thanks
What is something the different races actually like about each other?
>>50315740
HUMANS
- Dwarves: If you want something built to last, get a dwarf to build it.
- Elves: They know everything, even if they don't always tell you it.
- Gnomes: The only other race that innovates like we do.
- Half-elves: The looks of an elf, without the insufferable attitude.
- Half-orcs: The strength of an orc without - if you're lucky - the evil.
- Halflings: If you want a warm hearth and a good meal, go to a halfling.

Dwarves can appreciate orcish drinking habits.

I'm a Revelations of Glaaki guy

>>50314949
What a cutie.
>>50314949
Might want to have a look at the Ten Thunders from Malifaux, might be something usable there.
You'll probably won't get around some light conversion work, though.

Could try Heroforge.
Also, enjoy another Dancer.
>"Stun mechanics in D&D are bad because missing a turn means sitting around doing nothing for 30 minutes - 2 hours"
>Average group has 3-5 PCs. (4)
>Average fight has 1-5 enemies. (3)
>Monsters tend to take less time for their turns than PCs (like half as long, if that).
>Combatant Time Units = 4+(3/2)=5.5
>120/5.5 = 0:21:49
>30/5.5=0:5:27
>Average Turn Length Per Character = 5:27min ... 21:49min
Why in the nine hells would you wait between 5.5 and 22 minutes for someone to take their goddamn turn?
Like, okay, at the beginning of combat it can take a couple minutes to set up (that's before any turns though), and maybe the first guy in a combat takes a bit longer. But everyone after the first guy has had lots of time to decide what they're doing.
How are you waiting so long between turns?
It's not like we're talking about PTU, where there are always a ton of combatants, and thus a round takes forever.
>>50314904
It is an exaggeration for the most part. A lot of groups I have encountered also lack focus. They go on tangents between turns and do not pay attention when it is not there turn.
A bigger problem would be losing multiple turns in a row or effectively being knocked out of the encounter entirely.
>>50314999
>being knocked out of the encounter entirely.
I can see how that one is less fun.
Once had a player get basilisked on turn 1. He went and got snacks out of the kitchen while the rest of the party fought it.
But still.
If your turn taks you more than 2 minutes from start to finish, you're being a cunt to the rest of your group, and dare-I-say, robbing them of valuable game-time.
>>50315373
>If your turn taks you more than 2 minutes from start to finish, you're being a cunt to the rest of your group, and dare-I-say, robbing them of valuable game-time.
This. If you don't put down the phone/laptop and pay attention, your character zones out and skips a round.
There is a reason I ban phones at my tables.
the party just finished a huge arc where they killed a terrifying demon, and now I'm going to go with a light hearted session to bring spirits up.
Ive decided i want them to go into the woods and get dragged into a kind of game show, and the ones i thought could do this easy were fairies but i might make it a genie
what kind of fun questions would you ask medieval adventurers on a game show?
self bump?

>>50312977
You mean power armor is invented in 1916 instead of 20XX.
More interesting would be what the newly found compact, portable power source would do to aircraft, ships, and civilian life: I mean, imagine if we had lithium batteries in the 30s. Now, imagine if we had something even better then that in in the 10s.
>>50312977
Go to bed, DICE
>>50313023
Yeah, there's no way this tech would or should just stay as something exclusive to armor. Perhaps earlier jet craft with compact engines?
