It seems like every game has a "What is roleplaying" section in the front as though it is your first time ever touching an RPG, but then almost none of them actually go into any kind of real solid advice on the actual process of GMing and how to run a game.

Whatever one might think of the actual mechanics of the game, I've found Apocalypse World (especially 2e) does a really good job of presenting you with what the meat of GMing is and techniques to actually run games. Are there any other games (or just books in general) that have really solid GMing advice, procedures, etc above and beyond just "here are extra rules the players don't need to know" and the most surface-level advice "The GM isn't out to kill the players."

Looking for recommendations, please.

The Savage Worlds Deluxe GM chapter is short, about 12 pages, but is the only book I've read that acknowledges planning for game nights and coordinating them. Tells GM to make a set day, frequency of sessions, dealing with friction in the group. It's interesting, but nothing mind blowing. They mainly talk about building or converting a setting to Savage Worlds and focusing on the big picture, rather than small details you may or may not use.

It's been years since I sold my copy of the D&D 4e DM Guide, but it reminded me of the Pathfinder GM screen. Nothing but numbers. And that doesn't tell me how to make a good session.

In contrast, the 5e DMG was wonderful. Had similar points to what I mentioned with Savage Worlds but much more in-depth. Gave you systems to customize classes, archetypes, and races if you so desired. And actually mentioned Dark Sun for the first time since 2e, it feels like. If they revive Dark Sun like they did with Ravenloft, I'll actually preorder a D&D book. I try to stay away from D&D in general since I've played it too much, but the 5e DMG is amazing.

Look up John Wick's "Play Dirty", it's a shorter book but fill of great advice for DMs of all skill levels.

With the way Vancian magic works, can anyone who is literate essentially be a lev 1 wizard?

If it all really just depends on being able to read a spell and memorize it after you have read it. With lev 0 spells being relatively simple and easy to cast with people not really needed to learn for the day at all, is it really just a matter of finding a book with the spell in it and then being able to read it? Can anyone who knows how to read be capable of it?

As you can see from the title I need some help with a DnD 5E session. Now I know what I want from the story but this is my first time Dming and I'm not sure about the mechanics and how I should apply them in the mass effect universe. I'm currently in a 5E session with some friends but this'll be my first attempt at Dming. Any suggestions or help would be welcomed, even if it's just a link.

The issue with this would be weapons. You either have over powered guns that remove the need for magic (biotics/tech) or you have guns that feel underpowered. I would recommend using a Star Wars system for the conversions.
But if you are set on using 5e than just reflavor all magic.
Wizards, warlock, and sorcerers all become engineers Clerics, and Druids are biotics Bards are biotic engineer hybrids Fighters, Barbarians, and Rogues become soldiers Paladins, Rangers, Erdrich Knights, Arcane Tricksters all become the in between classes.
For races
Asari = Elves (or Tieflings) Turians = Dragon Born Volus = Halflings Salarians = Gnomes Krogan = Dwarves (argument could be made for orcs) Batarians = Half-orcs or orcs Quarians = Tieflings (spells are omni tool based) Yahg = Ogres Vorcha = goblins/hobgoblins Elchor = NPC Geth = Warforged Protheans = Genasi
>>
Tip: don't use 5e

There are so many systems and this will just limit you.

There are several great version of Mass Effect games.
The setting "Cold Fusion" for Cortex + in the Hackers guide is excellent, and that system would do an amazing job at the social/action theme of the game.
http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/117419/Cortex-Plus-Hackers-Guide
There is a great Mass Effect game for the "World" game system.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzUTkdniNXM1MHVFVVNKVEp4bFE/edit
And the Paizo made a hack, but there is no way I would recommend it.
>>
>>50339927
Ditto this anon and the other, don't use D&D for a sci-fi game. You'll end up with doing a lot of work to adapt the mechanics and it still won't feel right.

Personally, I recommend Thousand Suns, as it's a solid and easy-to-learn generic sci-fi system and already has a hack for Mass Effect: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?612444-Mass-Effecting-the-Thousand-Suns

I'm going to play pathfinder for the first time and I was thinking in playing as a dwarf female.
I saw a thread related in /v/ and I'm starting to think that it will be too weird for a new player.
Should I move on and play a vanilla human guy or go for the dorf girl?
Pros cons of dwarfs?
Also any lore advice for a rookie playing a dwarf?

Memes aside, just have fun, there's really not much you need to know for a first game besides that you'll need to try and work with your group and have fun. And yeah, it might feel weird at first, but once you get past that it's great!
Have fun man, and good luck!
>>
>>50339589
Dorf Girl is fine.

Go for it.

Just a threadly reminder that pathfinder is NOT a classic western fantasy RPG, it is in fact an odd cross-genre fantasy superheroes game.

What makes for a better adventurer, young and reckless or old and experienced?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>

Both in one party for fun character development.

Incidentally, what the fuck kind of stupid question is this? Obviously the elder in a career like adventuring is going to be better at it. But they were at some point the young reckless adventurer. It's a sliding scale, not a fucking yes-no option. Experienced adventurers don't just congeal into being.
>>
I typically prefer the latter but the former makes a great partner to them and their contrasting attitudes and clashing personalities are what make good stories.
>>
three reckless scrubs, two moderately experienced adventurers (still have a lot to learn) and a single stingy old know-it-all codger that seems to know/understand everything, but isn't terribly forward with their knowledge or assistance and really only stepping in when absolutely needed.
