Seems like a GMPC would do it better, since they aren't reliant on interpreting the GM

Navi wasn't that annoying.

Have you ever GMd a game where the goal was to rescue a princess, and where the princess was a normal, typical fantasy princess with no bullshit "twist"?

How'd it go?

Attaching lanterns to your belt. Good idea? Bad idea?
Historical references and depictions of lanterns worn on belts are few and far between. I've found more modern references:
https://books.google.com/books?id=EPIuXHxLJRgC&pg=PA295&lpg=PA295&dq=attach+lantern+to+belt&source=bl&ots=EL04aMqwZz&sig=OlqAmCbRgCg6vG5Y5dJxi4fyeT0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi6ta2ehb3QAhUH7IMKHW3nDtsQ6AEIUjAN#v=onepage&q=attach%20lantern%20to%20belt&f=false

Some bucklers in the Renaissance had hooks for attaching lanterns, but did people ever wear lanterns on their belts?
I can't find any references to it. Is that because people didn't do it? Or because it was such an obvious, mundane thing that nobody bothered to write about it?

you'd need an enclosed lantern for it to be safe, and if it is your only source of light it'd get annoying quick.

but fantasy games aren't a simulation. People rarely care about marching order who who is carrying the torch in the dungeon, or where the torch goes when you are fighting the monsters
>>
>>50350999
I still feel the need to run a proper classic dungeon crawl, where marching order is important, and you need to figure out how to haul all the crap out of the dungeon to sell it.
No pulled punches, no idiocy goes unpunished, death by stupidity is a constant danger.

They care if the torch goes into the monster.

I have a question /tg/. While attempting to write something up concerning the Death Korps of Krieg i stumbled upon a small hang up. Quite frankly i don't understand how and why trench warfare is still relevant in 40k. I mean maybe i'm just a dumb ass, but it seems to me that trench warfare would not work well against many of the Imperiums enemies. Is there any justification for it beyond the sheer grim dark? Can anyone explain to me why it might still be practiced, and under what circumstances it could prove effective?

It limits the mobility of the enemy and funnels them into killzones.

Containment.

An infect hive city can be surrounded by entrenchments, denied support by air/space, and shelled until its uninflected.
>>
>>50350749
Because shockingly enough the writers behind 40k are not military strategists and don't know the first thing about war or even basic physics.

They write what sounds cool, that's it, no matter how retarded the idea seems when actually looked at for more than 5 minutes.

Anoyne cares to explain this dungeon map for me? It's Mine of Phandelver module - the dungeon next to Phandalin.

PCs enter via A ... descend 5 ft along 1st stairs, walk OVER the Doors (enty B), descend another 5 ft, reach Doors at the bottom and enter northern corridor via these Doors that lead to a small, connecting corridor ...? Which should be 5 ft. tall? I'm confused. Why is part of that wall broken the way it is?

thanks

>What is Canadian Highlander?
A 100-card singleton format that uses the Vintage banlist, but limits cards that are deemed too powerful by assigning them a point value. A deck may only contain 10 points. Most pointed cards fall into two categories: fast mana and reliable tutors. More information including the points list at https://canadianhighlander.wordpress.com.

>>
>>50352119
Craterhoof is indeed a strong card, and the "Cradle-hoof" deck that combines it with Gaea's cradle is a significant force in the meta. But without being able to run all the tutors it likes, the deck is far from unbeatable.

Hey /tg/, let's talk about the game you love.

It's your favourite game. You've played it a ton, you have so many good stories and experiences with it, it's a major and formative part of your time in the hobby which influences the other games you play and look for.

That game? You should be able to criticise it. In fact, you should be better at criticising it than anyone else.

Loving something shouldn't mean remaining ignorant of its flaws or defending it at all odds. Doing that is honestly doing it a disservice, because you're lying, by omission if nothing else, to make it seem better.

If you really love the game, then be honest about it. Tell the truth, of what makes it great and what might not be so good about it.

Liking something with flaws doesn't make it bad. It doesn't make you bad. It's normal. Nothing is perfect, and acknowledging the failings of something, even something you're incredibly invested in, shouldn't feel like a personal slight.

Let's use this thread to take our favourite things off their pedestals. Talk about your favourite game brutally honestly. Heck, focus on the weakpoints, because if you really want other people to enjoy it the way you do, they should be aware of the ways it might not work.

Think we can give this a try?

7th Sea is a great system, but it's easy for the players to become way too strong. The party's tearing through Drachen and giant sea monsters like it's nothing, and the only way to make a character who isn't a pushover against the party is to make them completely broken.

When your players are cheating to help the villains you know there's a problem.
>>
Legends of the Wulin is one of my favourite systems, but holy fuck it is so fucked up.

Beyond the core book having literally the worst editing, it also has a few bits of the system which are just broken. Core styles which can be nigh on unbeatable, aspects of the system which are outright better than others. It's still better balanced than 3.5 core, but that isn't saying much, and it requires so much damn work to get the whole thing running smoothly.

Then again, the company behind it is also a total clusterfuck. You can still buy the book but as far as can be told they're no longer making games anymore, and actually stole a lot of kickstarter money from Jenna Moran and, from what the ex-CEO said on KS, took the whole company from him and left him with nothing. So we can be sure that there'll never be any official fixes or updates for the damn thing, making getting into it at this point a huge amount of work with little chance of it getting easier. I think the payoff is worth it, but it's one of the worst barriers to entry I've ever seen.

Epic Armageddon is the best 6mm wargame GW have ever made.

Fact.

Now, I'm not saying Warmaster is bad, I'm not saying that 2nd Ed Epic was trash. I'm saying that Epic Armageddon is their best 6mm game, possibly even the best game ruleset wise they have EVER made, and that next to nobody played it when it was in production because of how badly 3rd Edition Epic had scarred the fanbase.

EA is the ONLY game by GW at least, where I have felt that it was my own decisions that have won or lost me the battle rather than how well my dice rolled.
It is the ONLY 40k game which really really nails how each army should play.
The Blast Marker mechanics are the one good thing to come out of 3rd ed and they have been improved upon here into a key mechanic that simplifies the game whilst keeping thematics wonderfully.
The victory condition system is one of the best ones I've ever played and anyone who just plays EA to kill points is a loser and a slattern who is basically only playing half the game.

Plus the models are, in the main (eldar have a few stinkers) really good.

Is this game any good? I really like the Dresden files novels but the spellcasting in this one seems needlessly complicated.

It's awful. The Fate system is like freeform, except you get rewarded for nut-tapping yourself. It's supposed to discourage just playing a mary-sue, but the Dresden Files is built around having a Mary Sue and then just negging him constantly, so you end up with characters that are somehow even more unbearable than just a raw Mary Sue.

I've played twice, and am still wondering why I bothered trying the second time.
>>
It's a good implementation of FATE. If you like FATE and DF, you'll like DFRPG.
>>
>>50348148
The first edition (pre-errata or whatever they call it) was a godawful use of FATE, with everyone weighed down with 40 Aspects. Second time around was a bit better.

I need some advice.

Read the setting guides for other games, you'll get the idea. These things don't pretty much all have the same things in them for no reason.
>>
>>50347716
Depends on the setting and the system.
>>
>>50347716
Sorry to be That Guy, but don't do it. Here is what happens to these kinds of things (in my experience):

1. Players recieve a massive set of homework to do. Just like in normal school, that shit get's tossed into a corner and never touched. (At least by some of them)

2. Game time rolls around, GM slowly realizes no one read his super special world guide, and likely gets annoyed/ass mad that all the effort in creating it went to waste.

3. Players continue to ignore the GM's picture perfect version of his world via any combination of the following:
* killing major NPCS
* Destroying major towns/cities
* Not giving a shit about major plot lines
* Getting distracted by a shiny spoon and going on a quest about the spoon

4. Eventually, either the GM changes things to deal with the players being players (Good Ending), or the game falls apart via the following steps (Bad Ending):
* The GM railroads the Players into following his idea of the world and its story
* The players either resist the railroading, or quit playing
* The GM continues his railroad tour of his setting until he is either just mentally-masturbating with some other people in the room once a week, or everyone quits and he ends up with no group to game with.

If you want to write a book about a world, write a book. If you want to know a whole bunch of world-building fluff, do it, but never force it upon your players. All they need to know from you is the crunchy stuff to get started. If tiefling's or elves or some other race has a unique fluff in your world, you can tell them, but only tell them that kind of stuff for the races they can play as, likewise give them any mechanical changes that come from that. If one of your players handed you a 500-page backstory, you probably wouldn't read it, why would you expect them to do the same. Having world documents for when player's have questions is great, it lets them engage the setting at their own pace. Don't force it.

My fellow fa/tg/uys, i have noticed a trend where people use insanity as an excuse to have their character/bbeg do whatever stupid shit they want.
How do you make a good insane character?
26 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>50347393
Well, first, you have to figure out what their actual form of insanity. Extreme obsessive-compulsive disorder is going to produce a very different kind of character than someone who thinks that their dog is telling them to kill people.

Second, insane people have their own internal logic and reasoning for everything they do. They don't find it funny or strange. So you need to work out what that logic is, and then follow it as though it's the most normal thing in the world.
>>
>>50347393
Yep. It's a constant.Idiot players talking about how crazy they are, that they're so psycho and outside of the norms of sanity, purely because they think it gives them any kind of interesting features or depth of character.

It doesn't. It's all about attention.

Rocks fall. Kill the spastic.

Hey /tg/

So I have a group of fresh players who want to role play. They know about vidya but that's about it. I ran a one-shot 3.5 adventure the other day, but I was wondering, what's your idea of a fun system that's pretty entry-level?

I've tried ORE, Eclipse Phase, 3.5,, 4.0, and Pathfinder. I'm willing to learn other systems, too.

I have in mind a low-mid fantasy game of simple adventures, middling roleplaying, and regular (but not frequent) combat.

What would you do?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
D&D5e, Dungeon World, Possibly OSR games.

If you feel like breaking away from class based, Savage Worlds, Mutants and Masterminds, GURPS Dungeon Fantasy.

If you liked 4e combat and aren't afraid to put some work in for fluff, and you think your players will be on board, I'd also recommend Strike!, but only because I'm a huge fan.
>>
>>50347114
D&D5e, FATE, Savage Worlds, M&M, The One Ring

Essentially anything but D&D 3e and it's ken will be alright for an entry level group. I made my start in 3.5e and it was rocky to say the least. You're looking for something that promotes roleplaying and isn't too based in 'game mastery'. For some options outside of the game you have in mind look at Battle Century G (mecha) and Dark Heresy (HERESY!).
>>
>>50347114

You didn't like ORE?

If you're looking for fantasy try "Elric!", also released as "Stormbringer". If you're up for something a little more unusual, try Unknown Armies: it has an extremely straight-forward system letting you focus more on the roleplaying.
