So I am going to be running a game for coworkers likely. None of them have played table top games before and I would generally consider them normies. I have narrowed down the possible games to the following:

>Everyone is John
>Lasers & Feelings
>Night Shift

This would be an introductory session just to establish the general ideas behind roleplay and gaming in general.

Which should I go with? I'm leaning towards Night Shift.

Everyone is John might be a little too abstract for non-gamers to grasp and have fun with.

I am unaware of the other games.

Never heard of the last two, new players why not something they may actually have heard of Shadowrun, DnD, Pathfinder, 40k,Rifts, TMNT,

You dont have to play a snowflake game and turn them off to gaming.

Keeping the crystal spheres, changing the phlogiston to be more like the Astral Plane/Limbo/Warp. It''s also much more like a Dr.Strange depiction of travelling dimensions from the comics, with crystal orbs and tendril currents. In the intermedium are the floating corpses of the gods, their derelict palaces, the chaotic faceless demons that crawl over everything, and the githyanki pirates, profaners of godflesh. Inside the crystal spheres are largely more Star Wars planets than Spelljammer ones, but i'm still undecided on that one, if it takes away the magic/mystery or I can really explore the more stranger planetary depictions without making it too goofy. Im going for more LSD trip through a Hubble telescope than goofy.

Also doing away with the terrible restrictions on magic users that use a Helm, and the constraints of clerics/priests because some hokey about a god's sphere of influence. They're all dead anyway, but the power still works so there is clearly a greater power at work or godliness is a state of mind. Philosophers can't agree which.

Beyond that, it's essentially going to be D&D In Space heavily inspired by Star Wars, Kill Six Billion Demons, Warhammer 40k, and Metal Hurlant/Heavy Metal.

I'm working on a homebrew system where physical attacks and magic are controlled by the same stat. It will basically function as a stamina meter. To physically attack, you declare how many points you want to use and you attack for that much damage plus modifiers. Same goes for magic, but the types of spells you can use is influenced by your character's intelligence and spells can be crafted ahead of time to further reduce the stamina cost.

Is this a good idea? Has something like this been tried successfully elsewhere?

>physical attacks and magic are controlled by the same stat
Do you mean that physical and magic just consume the same resource, or that their effects are governed by the same stat?

If the former, then loads of video-games have tried ideas like it to varying degrees of success. I'd probably give it a name like "energy", and have a series of distinct powers balanced around their energy use and effects.
>>
>>50271571

Physical feats and magic draw from the same resource (Might). Players would decide the physical damage inflicted by their attacks by choosing how much Might to use. An attack using 5 Might would do 5 damage (and also take into account modifiers and armor and whatnot). Magical attacks also consume Might similarly, but a character's intelligence rating can lower the Might cost. Spells can be prepared in advance to reduce the cost as well.

How come the knights of Bretonnia, or at least the ones above the knights errant, seemed to treat peasants poorly in fluff? From what I gather the Lady only appears to knights that have proven to honorable and just, and this to me makes me think that to be a Grail Knight, in addition to being a bad ass, you also have to be a good person.
This makes me think of some proud Grail Knight in his gleaming armor atop his beautiful stead passing through a village that was ransacked by some orcs and the local knights and men-at-arms only barely held them off. It's raining, most of the buildings are in ruin, and the peasants are desperately trying to recover any of their few possessions; sadness and despair fill the air. So this here Grail Knight hops off his horse and personally starts helping the peasants repair their buildings. His once flawless armor is getting covered in mud but he doesn't care as he lifts debris out of the structure and has his horse help pull a particularly stubborn beam. And after he's done, he personally gives a great deal of gold (or whatever they used in Bretonnia) to each peasant so they can get off their feet.
I don't know, maybe this is too non-grimdark.

It's been stated I believe that Grail Knights try to be nice to peasants but they are often so detached from them that they don't quite understand what they need to do. For instance, a Grail Knight who's down a horse might requisition one from a peasant family, not knowing that they can't afford to just get a new one.
As to your example, I'm sure the first part would work but I don't think that Grail Knights use much material wealth so I don't know if they would have much gold to give, or if they would even think of the need for it.
Dukes and so forth who have succeeded at the Quest are different, of course.
>>
>>50269226
It was just GW being douchey to Bretonnia and giving them cartoonish amounts of grimderp.
>>
Not all Bretonnian nobles are douches to peasants, too. There are ones that disguise themselves as hooded bandits to fight nobles that abuse their peasantry too much, robin hood style.

Systems not centered around that just having extensive chapters will do as well.

Every Black Library author writes void battles the exact same stupid way in every book and I'm sick of it.

>Admiral A sits in his obviously superior flagship in the middle of his numerically-superior fleet. Nothing can beat him.
>Admiral B shows up. He is known to be a fierce and cunning foe, but mathematically has no chance of winning. He attacks anyway.
>The battle is joined. Admiral A is winning easily, as expected.
>Suddenly, Admiral B exploits the weakness that has been made obvious pages ago. Admiral A is caught completely flat-footed.
>Admiral A's fleet is utterly raped on the span of two pages and is completely defeated. Any resistance left is not worth mentioning, as all that matters is Admiral B won.
>Within 10 pages, the supposedly massive battle is over. Now we can return focus to Main Character C.

>inb4 leagefags be gone

Well, the setting is almost not defined and rather generic, just existing as an excuse to have every high/low/dark fantasy, steampunk and whatever other subgenre league characters fit into in the same game.

That beeing said, especially the never writing they started doing helps flesh out the world a good bit and might help to do some coherent and atmospheric adventure.

I can see it working with each plot arc having a strong theme depending on the region clashing with the most likely very mixed backgrounds party
>classic "medieval" stuff in Demacia/Noxus
>pirate shenanigans in Bilgewater
>hunting Void monsters around the globe
>archeology and pyramid dungeons in Shurima
>Example Party Consists of a Ninja, a Knight, some exotic Critter and any flavour of Yordle

It has a very lighthearted and crazy awesome tone to it, so I'd advise against gritty and dangerous systems.
Speaking of System: it would be rather hard to do with something preexisting i guess, especially if one wishes to be true to the source where every character is somewhat simple yet unique in their capabilities.
It might require so much homebrewing that something new might be just as much work.

Might crunch more ideas later if this thread stays alive.
I don't like to play League anymore these days, but I'm always up for Worldbuilding and Gamedesign based on a template.

On one hand, given its somewhat generic setting and powerful heroes, I'm inclined to use DnD. On the other hand, fuck DnD.

Hey /tg/ what do you think of my backstory? we play 5e
I made firbolgs in my village way more peaceful for fluff but who cares.
https://www.reddit.com/r/characterdrawing/comments/5asg02/rf_firbolg_cleric_for_billyccfc/

Firbolg society tends to not use names, but when he did take one, his name is Garen. Firbolgs live in isolated communities and avoid contact with other intelligent races as much as possible. They make small settlements and have strong community ties. They try their best to live peacefully, happily, and with free of conflict. Garen had a happy childhood, living in the forest in his village (which also had no name, just home) among his kind. He had no family other than his father who was loving and kind, but many friends in the tightly-knit community.
But when he was entering adolescence, a band of humans invaded his village and brutally seized control. Being a peaceful race, they had few weapons and no desire to use them. Humans are smaller than firbolgs, but far more numerous. The invaders were a large mercenary band led by a man close to the size of a firbolg, a former soldier named Gregor. He was mean and abusive, even to his own men, but he did get results. The mercenaries forced the easily exploitable firbolgs to do labor hunting and in the mines, with long hours, few breaks, and regular “morale boosts” in the form of beatings. This became the usual for Garen for many years. He started in hunting and general labor, but as he grew to adulthood, he became one of the larger individuals so he was sent to labor in the mines digging for precious jewels.

(2/4?)
Throughout his years of labor, Garen yearned for the freedom of his childhood, but whenever he mentioned fighting back his father reminded him that their way is not violence. Those who do evil things will always get their punishment, the gods would ensure it. To sink to the levels of violence your captors use, is to become evil yourself. Not only that, but to fight back is to risk your own life, it is not worth the risk. So Garen did nothing, and waited for the gods to smite the evil doers. But as the years went by, no smiting occurred.
One day, after a particularly savage “morale boost”, Garen decided he could no longer sit by and let these humans destroy their way of life. But as always, his father urged him not to, even forbade him. So out of respect for his father, he did not act. After that day he began having unusual and vivid dreams of fields full of men fighting, and kingdoms waging war. Another year went by and every day Garen thought about revolting, but he suffered in silence, waiting for justice to be delivered, but still none came, though the dreams got more and more vivid. In his dreams he saw battles he had only heard of in legend; Great heroes of old came to life in his mind while he slept, each night more real than the last.
Then one morning during work, one of the captors maimed a friend, and Garen finally defied his father. He grabbed a work hammer and beat down the man killing his friend. Other humans took notice and attempted to subdue Garen, but he felt a fury in his blood and felt stronger than he ever had, none of the simple mercenaries could withstand the force of his hammer. Garen strode out of the mines and directly to Gregor’s house, killing a few more humans along the way. Gregor met Garen outside and just laughed at all the weak men in his command who couldn’t even slay this simple primitive beast, referring to Garen.
>>
(3/4)
Garen walked over to Gregor, who drew his sword and shield. Garen began to raise his hammer and Gregor, a seasoned warrior, casually raised his shield. As Garen’s hammer was at its peak, he saw a vision, similar to his dreams, depicting a flaming sword upright against a shield. As the hammer was brought down, he shouted a name, almost involuntarily: “Tempus”. The hammer then suddenly became illuminated and shined like the sun. The hammer ripped through the shield, continued and struck down Gregor in the same blow, killing him.
Once Gregor died, the rest of the mercenaries fled, and his village was freed. After that Garen was known by a new name, Brighthammer. Brighthammer realized something that fateful day. The gods do not smite our enemies for us, they empower us to smite our enemies ourselves. Through battle, the gods determine who is right, and just. By becoming powerful, and fighting for what you believe in, you can make the world a better place.
He made another realization that day. That he no longer respected his father. He loved his father, but he could not respect someone who stands idly by, lets people walk all over you, and use you. Brighthammer developed a disgust for cowardice. He did not agree with his villages way of life. One must fight to secure their place in this world. He couldn’t help but think, the firbolgs attempt at peace may be why the other races trample on them.
>>
(4/4)
Brighthammer left home not long after. He didn’t feel at home anymore. He also couldn’t get that name out of his head “Tempus”, but whenever he spoke it, he felt a rush and a feeling of grandeur. He ventured off to nowhere in particular. In the next few years he roamed around disguising himself as human, learning more about Tempus, as well as working to increase his own power. He practiced his martial combat, and gathered more appropriate equipment. He battled anyone who committed injustices or anyone who was interested in a friendly duel.
He traveled and the more he learned more about Tempus, the more he respected his word. He decided to commit his life to Tempus, becoming a full cleric of the faith. From then on, Brighthammer felt Tempus’ favor flow through him every time he fought in a battle or invoked his name. Every battle when his hammer glowed bright, he was reassured of his path.

Here's the issue. GW fans / employees wound up trawling through these threads and started reporting the recasters. They would have to shut down one site and open another. So peeps here are now reluctant to just put out the info since they don't want their favorite recaster to suddenly disappear.

Hello /tg/, I need help.

I have been running D&D 3.5 for the past year and a half to the same group, and due to shitty circumstances I have stopped the game we were running and started a new one twice in a row. First time it was my fault, they pissed me off because they were being un-attentive assholes at the game and I told them I won't GM for them until they get their shit together. I ended the game there and started a new one about a month later when they decided to actually pay attention to the game. This time it fucked up because one of the players invited a that guy to the game which seemed okay at first but majorly screwed half the party later on in game, and another player (who is no longer in the game) helped him shit on the party. I was trying to pressure the group into not tearing eachother apart in game, since everyone wanted to kill the that guys since they were indirectly shitting up the party horribly (they did stuff they hid from the rest of the party that had very bad consequences) and I encouraged them to handle the shit OOC, because I hoped it could be handled reasonably. It ended with the half of the party that was getting shit on expelling the that guys from the party, in game. The that guys got butthurt as fuck and tried to kill the rest of the party due to out of game butthurt about this, despite the fact that they would have never done that in character. This caused a huge clusterfuck and I called bullshit, and it ended up with a strained drama that lasted about a month, where I was trying to kick out the that guy's without losing a really good member of the game, since the that guy is a good friend of his. In the end I couldn't handle the pressure of the whole drama and ended that game too, but I managed to kick out the shitty players. Now the game is running better than ever before in the entire year and a half with the group, but I am so burned out by the last two games that I am having trouble of thinking up a main quest for the party.

Do what I do. Alternate dms. Say, I'll run this one but one of you has to take over next week with your own campaign. Then do the main campaign every other week.

The offshoot runs I encourage to be one shots rather than lasting runs (usually person has never dm'd/not trying to ruin the main campaign/not trying to punish players)

After everyone has dm'd at least one round their overall gameplay improves, since they have more understanding of the process. Also helps keep the main campaign refreshing and prevents burn out.

Best decision I ever made as a dm.
>>
>>50263979
cont.

Anyway, I put a lot of work into the last two games and I am burned out and am having a difficult time thinking up a main quest. The game I am running is a sandbox and the world is free, so whatever the main quest is it'd have to be a big deal that would affect most of the continent. I am sorry for begging like this /tg/, but I really like this group and want to provide them a good game.
I could give some details about the world if you would like, /tg/.
I have an idea, but I don't know how good it is. Basically in the setting you have intelligent animals living in the woods, that mix and mingle with the regular animals. They are spurred on by druids to hate humanity and resist them violently, and were created by druids themselves to fight against human kingdoms that were rising and grew independent from druidic rule, and stopped practicing druidism and worshipped new gods. (this happened many years ago.

A druid that has converted to one of the new religions (losing his powers but keeping his knowledge) is spreading the religion among the animals, and there is currently a holy war being waged in the animal kingdom. If it is not stopped the religious animals will win out and you will have a huge amount of intelligent animals sworn to a god. They will reach out to a religious head of this god, and new churches of the wilds will be established. This will eventually lead to a crusade led by this church against the heretical kingdoms, which will be supported by a huge portion of the animal kingdom.

Druids, pagan kingdoms, and local lords are all interested in putting an end to this. Is this a good main quest, /tg/?
