How do you guys get past that feeling when getting into a project that you're a total hack?
It's stopped me from improving for so long. I'm tired of it.
This is what I'm working on now. And I've boarded some stuff that I don't know if I can pull off.
level 1: not knowing you're a hack / thinking you're good
level 2: knowing you're a hack
level 3: knowing everyone else is a hack, too
level 4: enlightenment: even though we are all hacking it that doesn't preclude the fact that we can be good (at hacking), and constant improvement is a possibility no matter what

It's really tricky finding that balance, anon.
It's always best to work up to anything, rather than taking on complex things from the get-go.
Not spending too much time in your comfort zone, but also not doing something that you're just not ready for, yeah, that's hard. I'd recommend biting the bullet for this one project, and trying your best to learn from it. Yeah, it's probably going to suck, but the experience will help you on the long run.
you will learn more from failing at these than you will doing anything else.
seeking specific answers for questions that arise from failure will make the pdfs a lot more useful,
but ultimately it's learning from failure itself that will make you better.
improvement is a marathon, not a race. being discouraged is equivalent to slowing down, not stopping.
I think that you are the most bad peopl I coukld thing odf

have you guys ever tried drawing without pressure sensitivity ? i feel like i have much more control over my painting when i use that method (it works best on a huge-ass canvas)
>>2661948
I've done quite a bit of painting on the ipad with procreate this summer with a cheap five dollar stylus with no pressure sensitivity. It has been a real eye opener and really makes you think before making a mark.
I also sometimes draw without pressure sensitivty in photoshop when doing gestural stuff and laying in a figure. It can be more direct that way.
>>2661948
I used to use pressure sensitivity religiously, but in the last year I've re learned the value of turning it off every now and then. I usually have transfer on (which uses pressure to determine how opaque the stroke is) but it's absolutely not necessary to have shape dynamics pressure sensitivity on all the time.
Recently got into face painting, mainly because visiting rave parties. Got myself some nice UV paints to start with. Anyone doing facepaints here? Tips, advices?

What are the very best schools to go to if I want to make modern/abstract art?
Rhode Island School of Design
Cooper Union
Only worth it if you are retired. As a young man looking for money it's dogshit tier. At best, 1/20 students will be able to sell some of their work for money and it WON'T be because they were more skilled than their peers.
>>2662716
This basically.
Yale
etc.
Whatever has the most prestigious name, pretty much all big league MFA (and even BFA) programs these days are all about post-modern/installation/performance/non-objective art. If you're serious about it just look at the work of current students and professors on school websites.
Also if you want to make modern art you're like 75 years too late.

I've been learning to draw for years now however I haven't the slightest clue on how to design something.
I have gigabytes of inspo and reference but I have no idea what to do with it.
How do you make a good design? Something that looks nice and would function reasonably well? Are there any books to learn from, or is this something innate?
>>2662431
You started learning without an objective?
>>2662431
You're either lying or you have some kind of mental disability.
Increase your general knowledge not just drawing knowledge. If you want to design a cool outfit for example it helps if you know about the history of fashion, why people wear certain types of clothes for situations, how clothes are made etc.
>hurr, her legs are too short
>that ear looks weird
>chest is too broad
>her arms look broken
>head is too small
>eyes too close together
Reminder that the people "critiquing" your anatomy have only glanced at a few anatomy diagrams which show some "ideal" man or woman and have never opened their eyes to the true diversity of the morphology of people.
Just look around sometime at people, not models, and see how many weird variations there are.
>>2661319
There is a difference between something that is glaringly wrong and the intentional portrayal of odd features. We can always tell.
>>2661319
It's very easy to tell when an artist intentionally choses weird or unusual anatomical features and proportions or when he just didn't know how to draw it properly and just uses this argument as excuse for his lack of skill and knowledge.
Like, when you drew a character that people told you has arms that look broken, you never consciously decided "I'm gonna draw this girl that has double-jointed arms, which can look broken at times because that's an important aspect of her character design.", You only decided to look for excuses for her broken looking arms AFTER it has been pointed out to you.
>>2661323
Yeah right, there's a world of difference between anatomy books and real life where people don't stand about like stiffs in a coffin, that's why life drawing is so important (though something rarely done by most d/icks/).
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
not good
just keep at it though and work on your fundamentals

Are there any online courses which are not some amateur cancerous money milking furfag spawning abomination, but a decently constructed course with smart proffesionals which teach how to draw analytically and provide a useful feedback? I feel that I really gonna struggle with the basics if I'll try to learn everything by myself, however art courses in my city are expensive and seem to be more traditionally inclined, which isn't what I want to master eventually, as I see it. Took up drawing as a hobby just recently, want to become really good at it.
Yes.
Gumroad, and Gnomon, and a couple others are great. I think Concept Art has a place where they advertize these. Also, check out Cubebrush, a few pros post lessons there.
>>2662413
Thanks. Already checked out Gnomon, but it looks like their courses cost a shit ton of diamonds.

Just torrent them nigger
When doing art commissioms for online clients, how do you show them your WIP without them taking your art and running off with it without paying?
If the work is digital, I take pictures of it with my phone and then send the photo over email. That way the client can see it but it has the pixelated screen warping the quality.
I'm just wondering if this is a good idea or does it come off as retarded to the client?
Right now I was commissioned to do some cartoon storyboards so I've been doing it this way and sending emails of what's been done. They paid a percentage of the final fee up front so I just hope they don't get the idea that I should be showing the actual clear image instead of a photo of it.I don't give the actual file until paid in full.
Good thinking. Alternatives I can think of: sending stages of the file (sketch, inking, colouring, ...) and getting paid a slice for each stage; sending a resized (small) version of the file; sending it as .jpeg (or with obvious artifacts; and just finding more trustworthy clientele.
>>2662233
I just send small jpgs, but I've only worked with companies and not individuals so I always have a contract and they always pay (though sometimes late). When working with companies you often need to wait a while before you get paid, like it often is set up so you get paid 30 or 60 days after approval of finals, rarely it is even longer than that. So you have to give them the full files before you see any money but you have it in writing as a legal document so it's pretty safe.
Sending a photo of a screen comes across as kind of retarded imo. Just sent a small jpg, or if you are worried you can put a big "WIP" written overtop it as a giant watermark or something, but that's really tacky.
Is it possible to get a graphic design job without having a Graphics Design degree? Been thinking about it what its like working as a graphic designer. I majored in IT and work as a programmer. I don't mind my job, but I fantasize about what could have been sometimes.
>>2662112
Degrees are useless. Portfolios are invaluable.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, cares about your art degree. You will NEVER be asked to show your degree.
Do you have a good portfolio? If so then yes. If not then no.
>>2662193
>Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, cares about your art degree. You will NEVER be asked to show your degree.
For freelance this is true. But for full-time positions sometimes they need them, especially if it is a teaching position or requires you moving and getting a visa. Source: I once didn't get a position in another country because I couldn't get the work visa without a degree, and I didn't have enough years experience at that point to act in lieu of one.
I'm considering giving up /ic/..
I need something to boost my confidence, something that will help me see that I can grow to be the artist I've always wanted to be. I work and study full time and with the little free time outside of both that I do have, I practice. I try really really hard yet I just can't seem to see any improvement and it hurts. I've read the sticky, I have all the Loomis books and some other random books printed out (free printings for "school related" things, no one needs to know right?). I just want to make sure, is it worth it? All this time I spend trying to draw a circle or get rid of symbol drawing, is it possible to actually be a self taught artist without resorting to ~style~?
I'm seriously considering saving up enough to go to a school like FZD or something just to see if I can focus on drawing for more than 2 seconds.
I'm just really tired of feeling like a failure, thanks for hearing me out /ic/..
>>2661947
All I see is whining about how slow you're improving when you have a full time job and study. You're most likely not going to improve at the same rate as someone's who's NEET starting to learn how to draw at the same time as you. Until you free up your time this is an inevitability, but not necessarily a reason to drop it (unless you're weak).
>>2661947
my parents keep telling me im trash also, i know the feel. you wont find success here only anger and vitriol you're not the first to post something like this but you wont be the last, i've purchased all the books and its been 4 years and i've never touched them. i'm sorry you feel this way, i'm sorry i feel the same. i'm sorry i cant help you. and i'm sorry you cant help yourself, but we both know the truth, it will take YEARS of FAILURE to get somewhere decent you don't need to be amazing to many fags have had terrible ideas and succeed, if you got the money get the basic jeff watts online class he talks alot but its relaxing. im sorry.

Hey anon, thanks for the kind words.
It means a lot to get an honest reply like this.
Know I'll be rooting for you.
Post examples of artworks and artists that reach, in your opinion, the lowest standards for working professionally as an artist (Concept art, illustrator, whatever).
Pic related. Imo.
