As you can see, I'm a pretty shit artist, and I'm pretty sure a fair amount of you are shit at art as well. So, let's start a thread dedicated to those who try their best, but can't seem to draw for jack.

Made a thread about this on another board, but I think this is a better place for this type of stuff. Just got this tattoo, I think it looks alright for an outline. The lines aren't as straight as id like them to be, but I think that can be fixed with some shading. Might just fill it in solid black. Any advice?

Heres a better pic, it looks really good, until you start to stare at it, then you start to see that some of the lines are a bit wonky

Hey /ic! I just got these books. What are your opinions on them? Did I make the right choice as a beginner?

Or we could talk how to books in general....

I only know the figure drawing books there:
Bridgman - I have some of his other books and he is fantastic imo
Hogarth - Dynamic Figure Drawing is better than Dynamic Anatomy, but I guess it's too late now
Peck - one of the best anatomy books
>>
>>2664630
Peck is just anatomy reference right?

And yeah I wish I had known about Figure Drawing though Dynamic Anatomy seems kinda decent so far.
>>
>>2664631
You can use Peck that way but you'll learn more by copying out the plates. He's good for showing you the actual accurate musculature and skeleton, and the information is very precise. Things like the tables of insertions and origins of muscles are most often gonna be reference tables, yeah, but I think it is worth copying out the plates too.

He's best when combined with other books though. Like Bridgman is great for showing an artistic way of treating and thinking of the forms of the body, he breaks things down into blocky masses that interlock. Using that, and supplementing it with more scientific knowledge from Peck will give a deeper understanding of what Bridgman is doing and how you might approach it yourself.

Whats the validity of /ic/? When you post here people shit on your art and tell you to get good, but 99% the critics are shitty artists themselves, almost no one here has the guts to even post their own art when giving a critique

>Whats the validity of /ic/?
None, the moment someone gets even a bit good they leave. though the general git good and study fundamentals is 100% valid advice.

>no one here has the guts to even post their own art when giving a critique
This meme again.
>>
>>2660301
post in the draw thread and ignore the rest of /ic/

decide for yourself if any critiques make sense or not. If you agree, say thanks and post a revision maybe. If you don't agree, don't bother saying anything.

Hi, I used to work for MUJI. Closest we do is in this picture- they're stackable A4 size and you can buy a few different types to customise your set up (thin, 3-drawer, big drawer, etc).

IMO too expensive, good design (Won Japanese good design award), can discolour a little over time, they're quite sturdy and yet dropping them can be a death sentence.

As for your OP picture, not sure. Ikea might be worth a bet, Tiger if you have them in your country or Paperchase, or Staples. (I'm talking UK so sorry if they don't apply)
>>
I have a 5 layer clear one from muji, it's perfect and aesthetic
I think it was worth the price for me since I'm going to be looking at and using it on a daily basis

I know how to reverse search. But if a reference thread requires you reverse searching the images to get a useable version of them then it's a shit thread.

Hi guys, anyone know of some nice traditional sculpting tutorials for super sculpey? Gumroad or something. It can also just be chavant clay but I feel like the gnomon workshop john brown ones arent really that good results wise and stan winston jordu schell looks great but doesnt do a lot of explaining. I would prefer sculpey though since thats the one I have.

A question for painters here, I've checked on internet for some art competitions and I'm not sure I'm doing it the right way. I'm 23 to painter doing that my whole life .I've finished academic art school and I've done some years of art academy, I've moved to Germany(Frankfurt) 2 years ago and currently applying to art universities in the area. Maybe you guys know a way to start promoting myself , I'm thinking to apply to as many art competitions and grants as possible, Maybe you could advise me some or at at least a way to start making a name.Thx

>I've done some years of art academy
Does this imply you have a BFA? If so you could apply to the Vienna academy - they got a line of study that favors realistic art. Many other academies favor no-skill art with strong concept. It will be very hard for a realistic painter to get accepted at any academy. They don't favour that kind of art at all.

Grants favors those who have a BFA and MFA even more.

Not every censored competition is the same. You have to know from their previous exhibitions what kind of art they want.

Portrait competitions like the Nordic Portrait Competition favors realistic art a lot more than other competitions. See portraet.nu for their exhibition catalogs.

I couldn't say I'm that realistic I do always different stuff also I have a tendency for expressionism sometimes. It's still strange most of competition I've checked award superrealist shit what I really hate.

Do you always finish your work or do you start over when you are not happy ?
I spent time on something but i don't like it anymore, I don't want to bother finishing it.
Should I start over ?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No

Leave it in "unfinished folder", come back to it in a year or something, fix it, remake it or delete it then.

You should be excited about the piece youre currently working on.
>>
>>2665031
I spent several days to do something quite simple but i fucked up and it's impossible to fix.
I'm redrawing it again and so far i'm going a much btter start; i haven't spent a week to do he pencil work because of lazyness, I did it in a couple hours
>>
>>2664983
It depends.

It's completely normal to not be happy with your studies; you just have to push it through.
Personal pieces that are done for fun, should be fun; when they're not, then there's nothing wrong with abandoning them.
Finally pro work that is made to get more fans or as commissions - I work on them until I'm happy with them or they're done. Otherwise I wouldn't make as much artwork as necessary.

Has anyone taken a look at the new 3dTotal book, Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop: Sci-fi and Fantasy?

I've overall been reasonably pleased with the other 3dtotal books, especially the Digital Painting Techniques series.

its more like an intous than a cintiq which is a let down
>>
>>2662434
No problem with that, anon. A lot of digital illustrators draw with intuos.

And OP. I'm not an expert, but I think it's better than an ipad at least. But only 64gb? I'll probably fill that up after a while.
>>
>>2662434
It's like a portable intuos with a screen and the ability to draw on paper while simultaneously transferring to digital

This sounds legit awesome, I've used all kind of cintiq companion alternatives (DV8P with digitizer, cube i7 stylus, Asus note 8) and they were all shit because of the glass screen
