I don't want to make this a tumblr thread or shameless self-promoting bullshit, but how do you increase traffic on your website?
I have a place and seems like no one gives a fuck. I don't draw badly I just don't know what to do to put myself out there. Is instagram a good alternative? What's the best place to post your artwork, and if you may add, what kind of work have you found by posting in said area?
Thanks in advance
.

Post in a lot of different websites, keep your work linked and update all profiles regularly. If you're really good people should just notice you over time, but if you're average interact more with whatever communities you're using and give other people feedback. Post in forums and get noticed.
Also make sure to tag your art properly, I know of a couple amazing artists who have been around for years but never get seen because they don't tag their work so people can find it or submit to groups.

if it's a tumblr you have and nobody's following you or anything yet, be patient. just keep posting until you have a decently-sized gallery of work to show someone, then do one of the following:
1. find someone popular and follow them. find a few. one of them might notice and follow you back/like one or two of your posts, which in turn will get it seen by all the thousand whatever people who watch them, one of whom is bound to also like it and cause the same thing to happen. then it will show up on a few dashboards of the people who follow THAT person, and... yeah, you get the idea.
2. draw fan art of some popular shit. this is similar to the first option. the good thing about tumblr is that whatever you draw doesn't need to be something whorish or that will crush your dignity as an artist, like some popular anime girl character or some shit, because there are SO many devoted fan groups to almost any cartoon/video game/comic book that ever existed on there. on my first blog i had a bunch of original drawings/ideas that i thought were pretty good (and i worked hard on) but rarely even broke two digits in notes (most of which were from people i knew anyway). then one day i decided to drawa character from an old playstation game and got nearly 100 notes and at least 20 new followers. it wasn't any kind of generic drawing or shameless furbait either. in fact it was quite reminiscent of the style i had already developed. but because it had that tag, my notes skyrocketed. it's that simple.
3 (most challenging). keep doing what you're doing and develop an original idea of your own that BECOMES the thing that people draw fan art of. spend years drawing, filling up your blog (or whatever it is) and being sure to only show your best work, and work yourself to a point where it's not as hard to make a drawing that doesn't look like shit. then you can spend more time on the actual idea. try (if this is within your goals) to get into real industries, studios, etc.

the primary component of all of those (but especially the last one) is perseverance. i'm sure you have some perception of the value of hard work, but to really put it into perspective, think of the artists you aspire to and really try to consider what their path was. achieving a goal like this is really something that requires you to get realistic and will possibly even develop your character. how far you get is indeed partially contingent on your natural skill, but also on how badly you want this. take comfort in the fact that you have a clean slate and nobody knows who you are yet. they have nothing but your now small collection of works to judge you by. make it matter. and don't forget you're only human.

Any good reference to learn all them art secrets?
My buddy's birthday is coming up and him and I are on an amateur Dota team so I thought I would get some art work to put on a t shirt. I seem to be having an unusually hard time finding someone to commission that isn't chibi bullshit.
You can try on here if you want. Provide your contact information, description of the project, and budget.
>>1844606
Sure thing.
Mobile email: [email protected]
Budget: $40-$80
Description: 2 frame comic.
1st frame Treant Protector holding a Phantom lancer kitten
2nd frame Full grown phantom lancer holding a radiance in one hand and a diffusal in the other.
I bet that a lot of people here would do it, if the budget was right. Is the image you posted something like what you'd want? There could be a few people on that skill level here.

I want to get into sculpting. I have some ability to sketch and stuff, but I don't know if I even have the materials I need to start sculpting. For example, I don't know how much table space I should aim to have (for small figures in the 1' range at most, at least to start) or where to look for beginner resources. Any advice? I could take a class, I suppose, but I kind of need to work on my own schedule because of all the uni projects I have this semester.
Use your hand
Dont take classes just pick up some clay and start messing with it, get experienced with depth and looking at something in three dimensions. I recommend starting with super sculpy. It's firm, flexible, you can bake it in the oven or boil it in water if you sculpted onto plastic (like if you were making a mixed media project or a custom toy).
As far as readings go you should check out this book "POP SCULPTURE" by Tim Bruckner and Zach Oat. Its focuses mainly on how action toys and those high end comic book character statues are made but its really informative and the writing has allot of humor to it.
>>1842803
OP here. Not quite coincidentally, I think, I ended up buying a couple pounds of super sculpy on my own. I'm having a really hard time making it not look lumpy. Should I just try and get it right with sanding?
>tfw nobody in your family or any of your friends knows that you draw gay furry/scalie porn and get paid for it occasionally

just from drawing furry porn, I mean
I know the feel, but hey at least I get paid to do art!
So I downloaded that mediafire link of over 450 of 0033's work, and it blew my mind. Amazing draftsmanship and form with such simple lines. I want to understand how he does what he does, and I was confused by some of the things he is doing.
Does anyone have a translation of this page? Can you figure out what it means? He often uses Xs at joints, and I am not sure I understand their purpose. My best guesses are they find the centerpoint of the limb in order to have the gesture flow through it, or they are there to help maintain the width when he foreshortens. Neither really seems that likely though. I notice the center of the X is exactly at the joint, and the end of each line seems to often hit a bony landmark on the outside, but I still don't understand the purpose. Help?

Commission pricing.
Should I be charging low when starting out, even if I believe I should be charging more for the quality they are getting? I feel as if high priced art only works because they have a big audience, thus a greater chance to find people who are willing to pay that much.
>>1836067
minimum wage up front + materials for how long you think you will be working on it, and what you think your time is worth for the finished product.
>>1836112
So, disregard the fact that I'm unknown?
>>1836121
Yeah, charging very little just undermines everyone else and fucks up the already fucked up industry. Don't undersell yourself. That being said, if your art is at a level that doesn't warrant semi decent pay, then you shouldn't be trying to get work in the first place.
Hi guys. So I've recently come to the conclusion that I want to learn to draw, my chief inspiration being Kim Hyung-tae. The thing is that I'm in my early thirties, and have absolutely no experience with art whatsoever. I would even say that I don't really have a very good concept of what it takes to be a proficient artist.
So I was hoping you could give me your honest opinions on this. Am I too old to learn to do this? Is there a talent ceiling, or do you feel that this can be mastered with enough practice and determination? Anyone with a similar experience?
Your input would be very much appreciated.
>Am I too old to learn to do this? Is there a talent ceiling,
No
>or do you feel that this can be mastered with enough practice and determination *and studying?
Yes
/thread
The fact that you're reading too much into this and questioning it all is why a lot of people don't pursue anything in life. You want to learn something stop thinking and start doing.
>>1822820
have you ever done anything similar? (something that requires a huge amount of dedication)
because even though you say you know it takes "practice", you may not know what you're in for.
you'll be shit for months/years depending on your talent, and you may hit a plateau and be stuck there forever.
if you want to start it as a hobby, just go right ahead.
if you want to get good though, get a sketchbook, draw A LOT, and do some of the academic practices as well.

hey guys, so i grew up a poor fag but i've had access to computers all my life and when i was 14 i saved up and bought a drawing tablet (a shitty one but still)
ever since i've been doing daily studies and i've gotten very good at painting on photoshop and painttool sai and stuff like that
but i've never had enough money to get into traditional art until now, so i just went out and bought a bunch of brushes and gouache tubes, and a nice heavy expensive moleskin notebook
i have no idea how to use these, i only have some small experience with water colours and i've never had any formal training
what do? how do i learn? my older brother showed me how to mix paint but he's gone to college now and i don't know anyone who could teach me
i've read dozens of books on anatomy and drawing and i have 4+ years experience with painting on photoshop but i have no idea how to apply these skills in a physical medium with real big brushes and canvases
what are some good resources that could teach me these stuff? like a good online video series or some books
>>1801423
on older brother: he's getting a phd in america through a scholarship, that's why he's older than me but still in uni
>expensive
You should start by buying cheap shit to start out with.
The process in traditional is a lot different than digital, because you can't just undo and redo and repaint everything whenever and however you want.
IMO Since you haven't done it before, you should just try to get the feel for it first. Don't try to make a master painting or even necessarily a painting yet. Do a similar thing that you would do when sketching, draw random objects/shapes and try to get familiar with how paint blends and works.
You should practice with colored pencil to get a hand on how to work with graphite pencil, ballpoint pens, dip pens and to understand how color work in most other physical media.
God this subject is so bare bones in terms of resources and accessibility.
