Not really sure why safety rails arn't always incorporated into dedicated bench press equipment. Safety rails don't mean you have to do a 'pin' bench press. It's fine if they are 1-3 inches below the top of your chest as you will probably survive a broken rib.
Without safety rails, your neck gets crushed or your heart gets turned into a pancake.
An unexpected seizure, fainting spell, or muscle tear can cause you to drop a bar faster than your spotter can even react.
Being macho isn't worth causing a crippling injury to your heart or crushing your neck.

if you hurt your neck doing The Press you're doing something very wrong. I think a more reasonable solution is to fix your form instead of looking for alternatives.

Read the sticky. You will eventually get to a point where dumbbells will not suffice if you want to progress, but you should have the lifts down so you wont make an ass of yourself at the gym.
Also look up kettlebell stuff. You can do variations with dumbbells.
