Hello /diy/

I'm looking to duplicate some of my house keys by hand and I didn't see a thread.

I'm thinking of buying these: https://www.amazon.com/Key-blank-Schlage-SC1-5-Pin/dp/B000CDM5N0

Are these of the standard U.S. house key profile?

Also, if someone knows of a better deal or a good deal on some automotive keys as well, I'd appreciate it if you told me.

Thanks in advance.

This is a new level of terrorism.
>>

There are no "standard house key profiles" because of degenerates like you.
There is a ton of different types of the same shaped key.

Its done so retards like you can just buy a random key off amazon and then hand file it to work.
Also no, Schlage is not a particularly popular keyset

So you're saying all makes of keys are different?

HALP!
I've got a slow, drippy plumbing leak somewhere on the first floor of my house.
There's water damage on the drop-ceiling tiles in the basement.
When I look above the tile ceiling, I can see the water is coming through the plywood floor above, at a point near both the upstairs bathrooms.
Any ideas how to track down the leak?

Food coloring? I don't know how many pipes you have going on, but putting different food coloring down them will tell you which one is leaking or if a main junction pipe is leaking. Then you know exactly which way to look.
>>
>>1037467
>Food coloring?
I thought about this. I'm not sure if it's a drain pipe leaking, or a supply line (or valve, etc).
I suspect I'd have a hard time collecting enough of the dripping water to see the color.
>>
>>1037464
Just follow the pipes man, look where it's wet.

Hello /diy/, I figured this is the best place to ask. I do all my work in my shop, but it's 100 degrees outside and I work with plasma cutters, so it gets fucking nuclear. My shop is rented so I can't install any kind of professional HVAC-type stuff.

What are my options to try to keep cool? I've seen portable Air Conditioners, or are they shit?

>>1037459
No place for a window unit? I've actually seen people buy a cheap door, and mount a window AC in the door because they were renting. They just swap out the door back to the original one when they leave. Kinda sucks entering and exiting but it works.

If you have a shopvac and the humidity is low you can make a swamp cooler where you can direct the air flow right to you, or up your pant leg, where ever (used mine for my welding helmet for uber cool welding and no fume breathing)
>>
>>1037466
No windows.

While the Shopvac might work, I already have industrial fans, but it gets so hot that blowing hot air back onto yourself doesn't help much.

Thanks though.
>>
>>1037468
No man, I mean swamp cooler.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-Evaporative-Cooler-swamp-cooler/
https://robotfun.wordpress.com/2011/12/21/swampcooler/

Just check the dewpoint for your location.

>The rule of thumb is that your swamp cooler will "cool" the air to about 10 degrees higher than the dew point. If the dew point is 60, then the most efficient swamp cooler would cool the air to 70 and a medium efficient swam cooler would cool it to 75. If the temperature 100, but the dew point is 60 (as in the example above) then you will see a good cooling effect from your swamp cooler. If the temperature is 80 and the dew point is still 60, there is no difference in how your swamp cooler will work. The temperature essentially makes no difference in efficiency. Now, if the dew point goes up to 65, then the swamp cooler will only cool to 75 or 80 and it is not very efficient. The temperature of 100 with a dew point of 65 will keep you very warm in the house. Now, if the dew point is 55, then the temperature can be over 100 and your swamp cooler is efficient!

You don't need a "cr", just put some diode on it.

But won't B1 overcharge without it?

Also if the batteries are connected in series (?) through the charge controller, will the voltage the PSU receives be additive? (In my example, 44V.)
>>
>>1037396
That is not what I meant, I mean, you don't need B1 at all, just get two B2s, and then make a mechanical switch that will do a quick switch over, then you can just plug in one, use it till near dry, and the plug in the second one, switch over, take away the first one, done

So, i recently bought an Airwheel M3, a generic multibrand electric skateboard that runs surprisingly well for the price (450$)
Problem is, i'm a longboarder. First thing i will have to do i making a custom board to better stabilize the electric engine, that has too much torque in my opinion, and increasing the lenght of the board, the force should be more balanced between rear tires (where the engine and the battery are) and the front tires.

The second problem is that it weights too much, 11 kilos. 24 pounds.
The battery weights too much, and i'd need some help with choosing the safest option while decreasing general weight.
Spec: 81.4Wh, 220V 50-60hz

Either change the battery, or change the size of the gears and/or wheels. Any of these will either do exactly what you want, or screw everything up completely.
>>
>>1037333
This. Can get smaller pack and less runtime but its gonna be heavy no matter what.

China is especially bad about this, but the gear is part of the wheel or wheels for power. You maybe could change it but i fuck sure wouldnt. Fucked uo 2 already.

Good luck op. Id just buld the custom deck and jet.

Ok, /diy/, I just moved into my new apartment in the Baton Rouge area and I'm really loving it except for one thing: the water has a very pungent sulfur/egg smell to it.
Whenever I start the shower the smell is very intense and unpleasant. I'm worried that I'll be walking around smelling like ass juice. Apparently this is an issue with people living in units all around me as well.
Can you help me fix this?

Do you know anything about sharpening hair clippers? I've had these for about three years now, and lately they've been functional, if slow.

I googled a bit and watched some YouTube tutorials that suggested that it was pretty simple.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fNfvELoHrQk

Sharpening stone, light pressure, movement along the length of it. My sharpening stone is a really cheap one, though new.

Gave it a go and clipper is now much worse. Barely even cuts. Did a few tests with a couple of locks of hair, and it seems like the blades neat the edges cut tolerably, but the ones in the centre are just singeing the hair. I'm assuming I did something retarded and just blunted my clipper to unusability.

Any ideas?

>>
>>1037166
you have to use very fine stones for clippers due to how they work
>>
>>1037166

As previously mentioned, you need a very fine grit to get an effectively-sharpened blade. Ridges in the cutting edge will tend to grab strands of hair before cutting them.

It also needs to be very flat, to ensure even mating between cutting surfaces. Personally, I use sandpaper and a surface plate (I do machine work), but most glass panes are very flat due to the way they're produced and can be used the same way. I go up to 2500 grit, which works, but still isn't really high enough to be ideal, it seems. Doesn't cut quite like new, but much better than dull.

Also, do you have enough oil on the blades? The oil is critical not for just ensuring the blades slide easily, but in ejecting any stray bits of hair from between the mating surfaces.
>>
when it comes to hair clippers i've found it's better to just replace them every so often or buy a really good set and have them professionally sharpened. another benefit of a good set is that you can often order extra blades

I want to build a machine capable of sorting coins, specifically silver from other alloys. I figure the best way to do this would be to judge coins via weight.

I intend to set up a mechanism which drops one coin at a time onto a scale, and then after weighing, have the scale tilt in order to dump the coin into one of two categories.

Thoughts on how this might best be accomplished?

There are already machines like this. Can't give you any brand names but I read about it months ago.
>>
>>1037001
I discovered one when I was doing preliminary research but I'd rather make my own than pay $500 for one.
>>
>>1037002
It will cost you more than $500 in opportunity cost.

Any way, what's the occasion? Do you have access to large amounts of circulating currency? If you're thinking of getting tons from the bank and then return it I heard that's very hard nowadays. And often they only find a couple dollars worth of silver.

I was looking at videos of people making these air coolers and was wondering how bad of an idea would it be to have a tube from it connecting to my computer case? Would the air be too moist and fuck up my computer?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I think you should go with your gut instinct on this one
>>
Yes, it would be a bad idea. Those coolers don't even work that well, and there's next to no reason to try to keep your computer any colder than it is normally besides dickwaving rights. If you overclocked it to the point where it wouldn't be stable unless you had a cooler hooked up to it, you'd have to constantly worry about keeping it stocked with ice lest your computer overheat and crash on you. Not to mention overclocking is a pretty minimal return investment on modern computers. It hasn't made sense (economically) to invest anything into overclocking in like a decade.
>>
>>1036922
Yes it will destroy your PC.
If it runs hot, do a proper mineral oil submersion setup like any nerd worthy of his pocket protector.
If you just want cheap a/c for the summer months, try it out.

Hey /diy/ young carpenter's helper here (18, going back to Uni soon)

I've been looking to buy a few tools to set up a small furniture making wood shop, nothing too fancy just book cases, small desks, two seat sofas', so forth. It'll have to be in a small room but it has a window and I have a box fan for ventilation. Anyway:

I read some history on the brands of DeWalt, B&D, Makita, and found out a lot of the tools are made by the same companies, for example B&D make DeWalts and brought Makita into a long court battle regarding product dumping in the USA which allowed them to acquire other companies and expand their contractor lines with DeWalt.

I'm confused. Honestly I'm kind of pissed. I just want a tool that will work, and won't betray me down the line, to the point I'm considering manual tools. I take care of my fathers tools despite them being old and beat up, so what should I get to make some furniture then? What brand would you recommend for someone like me? I know what tools to get just not where to get them from. Most of the reviews I see online are bought. Should I go to yard sales and thrift shops to search for tools? I might not be able to since there are none at my Uni, so online recs appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Fucking top idea, old boy - that will save us all having to read the shitfest that this thread is shortly about to become.

Not that I CGAF really either, but, I think it was actually TTI/Milwaukee got taken to court by Makita for shady practices - which may have been yet another issue tho, they all at it.
