I was thinking of building sheds or portable cabins. What's the best way to sell these things? I've already built one shed. Its pretty much all cedar and looks aesthetically pleasing but putting it on craigslist I haven't had much success in selling it. Is there another way to do this? I don't really have a roadside where I can place the sheds for traffic to pass by.

>>
shed market is saturated. now that big box stores sell them out front you're fucked
>>
>>1038918
I can under cut them on price because I work for myself for pretty much less than minimum wage so I should be able to move the things somehow. I just don't know how to reach my target market. I don't think people usually brows craiglsit for sheds and its a pain in the ass having to repost it because the place where I build them doesn't have internet access. So Its kind of screwing me up. Should I build a web site instead of using craigslist or is craigslist better?
>>
>>1038923
You're not listening, >>1038918 has already explained it to you, building and selling these things will not make money, you either need to do something the big box stores haven't thought of, don't want to do or can't.

Maybe you could make "bespoke" outbuildings of some sort, odd shapes and sizes not readily available off the shelf, build them in a way that lends itself to easily being turned into a residential unit, but whatever you do you have to first see if there is a market for it or you will go broke.

I live in the US. I have an old table saw with a 1.5 HP motor. It is currently wired for 110 volts. It will draw about 17 amps according to the data plate. That is more than any of my 110 volt outlets will manage, as they all have 15 amp breakers and would need a wire replacement to go higher. I do have a 220 volt outlet that is free though. The breaker that controls it is a two switch 40 amp breaker. I'm assuming that is 20 amps per wire, correct? The 220 volt outlet is the 4 prong type for an electric dryer, pic related.

My question: Can I wire my saw to a 220 volt 4 prong plug but only use a single hot to get 110 volts at 20 amps?

>My question: Can I wire my saw to a 220 volt 4 prong plug but only use a single hot to get 110 volts at 20 amps?

Yes, but the breaker may not protect it.

You 'could' add a 20A breaker to your adapter...
>>
>>1038734
>Yes, but the breaker may not protect it.
If its 20 amps per switch on the breaker why would it not protect it? If it goes above 20 amps and that is the limit it should trip.

Either way its more about not tripping the breaker.

I purchased a home and the hardwood floor in the master bedroom was in rough shape. I decided that I could hire someone to replace/refinish or try it myself since I figured I could still do that if it went wrong.

I spent a couple days sanding, staining, and applying poly. It wasn't perfect, but I felt pretty good about it considering it was my first time. doing it

After the second coat of poly I wanted to apply a third coat so I waited 24 hours and went to sand, but in some spots I sanded a bit hard or I didn't wait long enough to sand. It's a dark Kona shade stain and it is noticeably lighter in those areas now. I stopped and haven't done anything else. What's the best way to fix at this point? Do I finish the job with 220 grit and then re-apply stain and poly again or is there a better solution?

>>
>>1038177
I layed hardwood for years. We didn't stain very often but when we did, if this had happened, we would have mixed the stain and poly together and just kinda feathered it out around the spot.

Just remember that the higher the percentage of stain, the more streaking you will have to deal with.

Just because I am not aware of a better solution does not mean that one does not exist.

That's just what we did lol.

Hi /diy/nosaurs,

I've wanted to build an L desk for a while, but I like cable management and having a keyboard tray, among other things, so just buying a cheap one wouldn't do.

Having received some drawers from my uncle's kitchen reno (brand new, didn't work with the final layout), I decided to make that dream a reality.

Buckle up and follow me on my journey, faggots.

Also, feel free to post your desk builds here.

Sup /diy/. I'm making a camper van out of my work van. It's a 1999 Nissan Vanette, which is basically half the size of the American megavan one usually uses for these things.

I have zero experience with camping or van dwelling. The idea is that it should be less than a day's work to convert this between camper van and work van, so it's a bit of an odd build since everything has to be portable. I also have a budget of basically nothing, so almost everything is built out of random bits and bobs I have lying around, or I that can manage to score for free/cheap.

Any experience/suggestions are welcomed. I hope someone'll find it interesting.

I'm also making videos on the work as it progresses: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnUvidaMphLlQeXuRsrc7rdzEdvH-jhs5

It is way too late for that, and I don't see the point. A trailer would cost a fortune, and the van is going to spend 90 % of the year in work van form, which equals empty plus crap strewn along the floor.

So I got this old Toshiba Satellite that runs Win98 for free and would like to get it working a bit better. Does anyone know if these early laptops were supposed to have extremely bad screen refresh rates? Mine is so bad that when I move the mouse, the cursor simply dissappears and then reappears somewhere on the screen when I stop moving it. Same thing when anything is moving on the screen, it just turns to a blur and then when it stops moving it goes back to being visible.

I found some setting that let me change the refresh rate between 60hz, optimal or default. None of them make a difference.

Is it just supposed to be this bad or could it be a fixable problem?

I said I'd be back when I made another vacuum tube, so here it is (pic related).

ITT I'll answer any questions about how I do what I do, and give whatever advice I can if anyone is interested in doing the same. Also if you make tubes as well you should definitely post yours here, even if it's just a lightbulb or something. I know a few guys were interested in doing that in the last thread.

My site is here:
http://simplifier.neocities.org/index.html

If you want to get a good idea of how I got where I am now, start at the bottom. If you were in the old thread, start at the oxy-propane torch article, because that's when I start gearing up to make new tubes.

One thing to keep in mind is that although I make tubes, I'm really not an expert on "modern" ones like you'd find in audio equipment, so this probably isn't the best thread to ask how to fix your guitar amp. My knowledge is more focused on the details of how they work, rather than on the specifics of certain models.

As far as what to expect in the future, I'm going to start focusing on radio, with my long-term goal being a single-tetrode AM transmitter. The tetrode being homemade, of course. Beyond that point I'll start making larger tubes, with my end goal being to make a CRT.

Never thought about using the medical oxygen generator. Here I am spending $9 a pop at home depot for a bottle of oxygen that burns 20 minutes.

Do you need to store the oxygen or does it simply generate enough to meet the demands of the torch on the fly?

brb craigslist
>>
>>1037481
Oh man, you've been wasting a ton of money. The large torch tip in the video is only using about half of the maximum output of the concentrator. I've got a larger tip that I'm working on that can liquefy 1" medium-wall Pyrex, and it just about maxes it out. I'd only need to store oxygen if I intended to work with tubing larger than 1-1/2" or so.

On the plus side, now you've got a bunch of empty O2 bottles, so if you get a concentrator you can possibly use a compressor to refill them for portable/small work.

The only downside to the concentrator is that it needs to put out at least 1LPM or so, otherwise pressure builds up on the inside and it starts making warning beeps. So if you want to use a micro torch or something, you'd have to put a leak in the hose on purpose to let out the excess oxygen.
>>
>>1037472
Damn, that's one good looking tube!
How long have you been practicing?

I've been thinking about getting into making vacuum tubes as a hobby ever since I discovered glasslinger on youtube.

Also, I know tooling is a bit of an investment to start, but how much does it cost to keep a small stock of materials? I've seen that the glass can be a little pricey and barium for getter can be somewhat hard to find.

I know ladies who make money buying glass bottles in bulk, drill a hole in the bottom and stuff Christmas lights in it. The slap whatever logo on it she thinks will make it sell, team logos, Nascar, Santa, etc.

She sold them for $20 a pop at craft fairs and other events that allow crafting vendors.

The keys to business can be found everywhere on the net, make a product cheap, sell it in places where it will be bought.

Hi guys,

looking to make my first diy speargun. Looked around on the interwebs and while I found a lot of helpful threads and videos about the subject I couldn't find actual schematics. Does anyone have some speargun schematics maybe?
As this is my first try at this and also my first go at precise wood/metal working (made some easy furniture and an ugly drum smoker plus a couple of little things) I'd like a good plan to follow to get into it and then take it from there.
Thanks in advance and also any other input is much appreciate aswell!

Cheers

As a mechanical engineer I'm going to tell you to avoid using wood and metal in sea water for blatantly obvious reasons. Even top notch stainless, chromium plated, or anodized aluminum is going to corrode rather fast in that environment. I would recommend polymers or carbon fiber.
>>
>>1036968
Thanks a lot for your input! But wood and steel or aluminium are often used for spearguns and have stood the test of time. You're absolutely right though, that's one thing you have watch in the treatment of wood and metal for such a purpous.
One other reason is also that I don't have the tools, experience or equipment to work with plastics or fibre. If you have a solution to that problem I'd love to hear it though as it would be a great substitute for wood/metal as you mentioned!
How would one go about working with those kinds of materials to make a speargun?
