Hey guys, I'm going to be moving out to a cabin innawoods next March. I'd like to be prepared but don't know the best resources to go off-grid. What I have so far:

Books:
Back to Basics by Abigail Gehring
Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre by Brett Markham

Websites:
www.instructables.com

Do you have any favorite resources for this kind of thing?

As a canadian trap line enthusiast, I am a living resource. Is there anything specific you want to know or are you more looking to pack reference material?

If the latter is true you could look around at outfitters like cabelas for reference guides instead of bringing text books. Hauling that weight would really piss you off, trust me.

hey /diy/, been thinking about putting an addition on my house and i always liked the idea of a crows nest/wizard tower.

would stacking pic related on a foundation work? how would i go about making doorways or window openings?

is this just a retarded idea and i should do it out of wood?

I'm no engineer but it seems like you'd need some kind of reinforcement to keep it from collapsing on itself from the weight

But again, I'm retarded so, you know, probably get a second opinion.
>>
>>1035590
call up the company that makes the cast concrete pipes you want to buy
>>
>>1035592
think they pretty solid, could probably stack a few - start cutting 'windows, and doorframes' into them, maybe problematic but.

bought 4 of these (slighttyy smaller) once as foundation 'feet' for something else - was surprisingly cheap, way cheaper than building shit form scratch.

Dunno if this is new or not but have this idea of a small fan that you could attach to the roof/hood of your car which generates enough charge to charge your phone or whatever else you want

Share your ideas and we'll judge, feel free to steal any and make money off them

(sorry for the shitty pic, its my idea but my phone camera is aids)

In case there was any confusion on my idea, as the car drives it enough "wind" would go through fan to spin it and generate charge with simple magnetic generator, dunno much about electronics but its just an idea
>>
>>1034635

Your idea would work OP, however you're better off getting the electrical flow from a generator attached to the engine. You can't escape the second law of thermodynamics.

You would be better off inventing a coating that goes on the car that produces electricity from the friction of air. That is all energy lost during travel.

Anybody got any projects they're working on?
Where can I pick up cheap or free steel to practice on?
31 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
>>1032629
If you want free metal you need to ask some local fabricators if they have any cut stock lying around or cut rebar. Sometimes they'll let you have it. For practice go get a block of sculpey and roll into round or whatever you want to practice on then put it in the freezer over night. "frozen" sculpey behaves the same way as hot steel. You can work on your strikes and see how things will turn out before wasting any metal.
>>
>>1032629
>free steel.
Steal parts off your neighbors' cars.
>>
I'm lucky that I work at a fab shop and my boss lets us have whatever we want out of the drop pile.

I haven't started working any metal yet but my stepdad has an 80lb anvil and I'm saving up to build/buy a forge when I move into my own place again.

So I just remembered that my family has a three acre plot of land in the middle of nowhere in Sweden

the area is home to farmers and thick dark woods

what fun can I do with it beyond building a cabin?

pic related. as you can see its a field with some woods on the sides

I'm gonna take the three hour drive to take a look at it in person soon, but I figure maybe I should be able to grow something in the clearing?

additional questions:

how much land does one need to make a living off it?

pic related is the immediate surroundings

considering that there is farm land close to it, the odds for my land to be arable should be quite good, right?

I hear there are lots of boar in the area, but I don't have a hunting lincense yet. I understand national and local regulations apply, but is it generally possible at all to hunt boar on three acres? Like, if I were to go there, license and gun and all, set up a tent and then shoot a boar on my own property, would that be alright?

since my questions mostly relate to what one might call "homesteading" I but it on /diy/ rather than /out/. hope that's OK

I don't know how big an acre is but I bet it isn't enough.
I live here on the other side of the baltic and I believe the economics are the same. Basically you can't do shit without equipment and that again is too expensive...
I rent here a house while I build my own and our landlord is a farmer. He says that before the EU-money he has a loss of something between 100 and 200 euros per hectare. If i remember correctly he has a bit over 100 hectares of cultivable land. And he has all the equipment from before, tractors, harvesters, drying silos and the whole shebang. If your property is not field then you need serious equipment to make it growable!

So hard to make economically feasible I'd say. You need to grow something that pays well. And weed can be grown in a closet.

Keep it for fun, not for profit as it's hard.

Ok.. WTF
I just learned that Americans build their houses with drywall and wood. What are they thinking?

When we build our house in 2003 we used the normal method in Germany (when not using clinker)
of 11,5 cm sand-lime brick for the outside, 5cm air, 8 cm polystyrene for isolation and another 11,5 cm sand-lime brick for the inside.

Our ceiling is 30 cm reinforced concrete supported with two horizontal steel T-beams.

this is the normal way to build for new single family houses in Germany.

So my question to you is why do you build your houses with such weak materials?
DonĀ“t you fear a big storm or fire destroying your house?

I am interested because I want to build my own house in the future too and I was wandering
why there are so big differences of building new houses in America and Germany.

Lumber is cheap. SO cheap. Building the house you've described would be a much more expensive endeavor.

Fires and storms are rarities one can insure against.

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer the German method here, but Americans will always prioritize being able to build too many, too-big houses for low materials cost.
>>
>>1024013
A lot of people do build houses out of premium materials

With that said, its just cheaper and faster to do it that way.
Nobody wants to live in a old outdated house.
There are a lot of neighborhoods with old brick houses that are still perfectly functional, but nobody wants to live in them. It costs just as much to build a brand new house than it would to retrofit the old hazard to be to code.

Its not uncommon to buy an old house for its plot and completely demolish it. Just throw up a brand new completely state of the art house.

It allows the middle class to build houses and keeps neighborhoods from going to shit.

I've got an old 1950's ranch house. It has vertical tongue and groove wood siding on the exterior. The house has newer windows but god knows if there is anything in between the walls. The west side of the house gets so hot in the afternoon you can feel the heat with your hand if you put it on an interior wall. I'd like to remove the siding on that side of the house and properly insulate the wall. How difficult would that be to do? I'd like to reuse the siding if possible. If it wont be possible to remove and replace it, it would significantly increase the cost of materials.

I like to go from the outside in as doing it from the inside would require I remove drywall in three rooms.

>>
I dunno about T&G siding but for my time and exterior (stucco) I'd rather take out the interior walls than the exterior. YOu'll have to rip off the outer sheathing as well (osb/plywood) if you go from the outside which you shouldn't do to the whole wall at once because it is structural. You'll also lose your weatherproofing if you get sidetracked or there is a freak storm.

I'd go with removing the interior walls. Honestly hanging drywall is super easy, mudding is only slightly more difficult, as is painting.

You can also 'blow in' insulation with a rental machine from home despot (which does a mediocre job), or get a pro installer to do who will drive up with a truck/van/semi mounted blower and stuff your walls with 3.5 lbs/cu ft which is the maximum you can achieve without your walls bursting.

Monitoring this thread (on phone so no lizard pic) because I too have a 50's vintage house. I KNOW there is no insulation in mine. Interested to hear any anons' opinion on blown in insulation. Seems like a pain in the ass drilling a hole between all the studs then patching. And does it fuck with the electrical system at all? I've heard good and bad about it, like it can settle and then you're back to basically no insulation. I agree that inside would be easier, just wondering how much... Also OP, if you have the old two wire electrical system (like me) and you rip out the the walls, it would be a great time to upgrade to three wire.

Not a total hijack, this info is pertinent to OP's question, but sorry none the less.
>>
>>1038224
If you get the 3.5lb insulation it won't settle because it can't. You can't DIY it though because the blower is too big to rent. In that case your contractor should warn you if electrical would be effected. I can't imagine it would be unless you had knob and tube.

Anyone know where to start reading about HUD tech?

I want to integrate a HUD on the glass of my oven. Ultimately I'd like to also get a touch element working on the glass too

It's an oven so it'd have to be heat resistant.

Nothing is going to be able to survive

Dang it

What about displaying information with a projection?
>>
First off, what purpose will the hud serve? Information for the oven? What will the touch controls do? Control the oven?

First, ovens can get hot enough to reflow solder. That could cause serious issues for any pcb that needs to be inside the oven to pull this off. Some electronics don't like heat either, like ICs and fets, which will absolutely be included in anything you use for this.

Second, you won't be able to use that glass for touchscreen controls. You won't be able to replace it with a different type of glass either. And even if you could, clear touch screen controllers are just now starting to see use in consumer devices, it's new and expensive technology.

Third, if you're intention is to control the fridge and view info for it, you'll only be able to see info the stove is designed to track. Internal temperature and clock for example. To get that somewhere else you would need to modify the board for the stove, finding the data output, routing it to something that can actually interpret the data, and then outputting the data to the hud. Same thing, you'll only be able to make it do things it's capable of doing, at most you could set up something that will turn the oven off if a timer goes off and the door doesn't open for a couple minutes, or to change temperature automatically after a certain amount of time, but that'd be something separate and extra you'd have to work to achieve.

hi 4chan! I`m trying to design my own white noise machine. I have minimal (2 high school classes) experience in electronics. It needs to run off of 12V 2A DC and it needs to be capable of powering a strip of 3 LEDs as well.

so, to be clear, my criteria are:
>12V 2A DC (the only power supply I have under 20v and above 7.5v)
>has enough leftover energy to power 3 LEDS on a strip
>breadboardable
>can plug headphones into them (aka no external amplification needed)

the only noise source i see being used normally is an NPN transistor with the collector arm disconnected.

pls help
pic unrelated but it's my iron I use

Hey /diy/ my brother gifted my father this wheel from a friend's derelict boat a few years back for use as a decoration on his dock. The boat sat on a trailer in the Texas sun for decades without protection from the elements.
The high humidity and frequent rains have caused a lot of warping and cupping in the wood of the craft. The wheel itself seems to have been spared from that and is in pretty good shape considering. It is however very loose and gaps have opened in the joints between pieces. There are a few cracks in some of the turned parts and in the wheel itself. Some of the dowels are standing proud of the wheel but not by much. None are noticeably loose.
My plan is to sand everything down to bare wood, put epoxy+sawdust in the cracks, and coat it with some wipe on poly. As much as I'd like to take it apart and replace anything that ought to be, I lack to skill to do so. I've been told that I should put oil (linseed, tung, Danish) to rehydrate the wood and perhaps cause it to close the gaps and tighten the wheel some.
My question to you is, what would you do?

Best to research heavily online. Finn have been the major US hydro-seeders for a long time.

You can find landscaper forums and help him figure the best bang for the buck. If buying used don't be afraid to drive long distance for a deal and do study the fuck out of the specific model you are considering.

Business licenses are a local deal. County courthouse should have some info.

How would I go about building a circuit that produces a Sin(x)/x function or for that matter just sin function?

Basically something like this where I can just apply a small amount of voltage and current and look at it on an oscilloscope.

I have a CS degree but we never even talked about this kind of stuff, mostly data structs and java shit. Thanks
>>
It depends on everything else. To begin with, do you really need a circuit which produces the sine of a random input voltage or do you just want an oscillator with sine output?

If you insist on building a sine/sinc block, then the old-fashioned way was the piece wice-linear approximation using diode or analog switch clippers.
A bit more modern way would be an ADC + ROM + DAC.
IIRC Analog Devices also had an IC long time ago for producing sine output. I think it used the aforementioned technique internally.
>>
>>1037711
Well really I just wanted one to better understand the applications of sin(x)/x and since I can already tell a sin wave generator is easier to make I would rather make a sin(x)/x generator with random/arbitrary x value as x approaches 0 on the x axis.

I don't understand some of the things you are saying though like wice-linear approximation and I
would rather do it the old old fashioned way.
